Sheila Kaplan Named Investigative Editor of Mother Jones

Mother Jones magazine has named Sheila Kaplan Investigative Editor. A prize-winning investigative reporter, editor, and television producer, she has worked as senior writer on the investigative unit of U.S. News & World Report; producer for the investigative team at ABC News in Washington, D.C.; chief political/investigative producer for MSNBC’s website; and senior writer at Legal Times. She was also senior writer on the National Magazine Award-winning team at Common Cause magazine.

A 2001-02 John S. Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford University, Ms. Kaplan has won numerous other honors, including the Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) Prize for Distinguished Reporting, The Lowell Mellett Award for Media Criticism (now called the Bart Richards Prize), several Emmy nominations, and a Screenwriters Guild nomination.

“Increasingly, you can't understand how government works without understanding how business works,” comments Mother Jones Editor in Chief Russ Rymer, “and the truth of any matter lies in the deep connections between those two worlds. Sheila's editorial acumen and wide-ranging experience make her the ideal person to bring those connections to light for the readers of Mother Jones.”

For her part, Ms. Kaplan observes that “Independent media has never been more important than it is today. I’m very pleased to be working at a magazine whose editorial stance is not influenced by the fear of offending advertisers or political leaders. Mother Jones has a great tradition of tough but fair investigative reporting, which we plan to continue.”
