Congress will resume the so-called Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) hearings after the holidays. This legislation, backed by Hollywood, the music industry and the US Chamber of Commerce, would give them the power to disappear websites they don’t like, without due process, effectively censoring the internet. In August, five of the largest tobacco companies joined together in a lawsuit to block the FDA from requiring graphic warning labels on cigarettes that show the health consequences of smoking. Last week, Federal District Court Judge Richard Leon gave them their wish, deciding that such warnings infringe on the First Amendment rights of tobacco companies.
