Ice Age Froze Europe In Months

Freako-frakkin-nomics notwithstanding, climate change is a thing of violent swiftness. New research indicates it took only months for Europe to freeze solid 12,800 years ago.

The most precise analysis yet of the onset of the "Big Freeze" reveals that Europe froze not in a decade—as previously thought from analysis of Greenland ice cores—but in less than 12 months.

The Big Freeze was triggered by the slowdown of the Gulf Stream. It terminated the Clovis culture, the dominant culture in North America at the time. Once triggered, the cold persisted for 1,300 years.

New Scientist reports on the research of William Patterson of the U of Saskatchewan whose group studied a mud core from ancient Lough Monreagh in Ireland, slicing layers 0.5 to 1 millimeter thick to study three-month intervals. No prior measurements from this period have approached such fine detail.

Turns out, at the start of the Big Freeze temperatures plummeted and lake productivity ceased within months or a year at most. Patterson presented the findings at the BOREAS conference in Finland. According to him (via New Scientist):

"It would be like taking Ireland today and moving it up to Svalbard."

We know the Big Freeze was triggered when a glacial lake covering most of northwest Canada burst its banks and poured into the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans, diluting oceanic salinity (I wrote of fears of this in MoJo's The Fate of the Ocean) and rerouting the oceanic currents that deliver climate to the Northern Hemisphere:

Two studies published in 2006 show that the same thing happened again 8,200 years ago, when the Northern hemisphere went through another cold spell. Some climate scientists have suggested that the Greenland ice sheet could have the same effect if it suddenly melts through climate change, but the 2007 report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change concluded this was unlikely to happen this century.

Well, that's out of date. We already know Greenland is turning to slush frighteningly fast.

Patterson's team have now set their sights on even more precise records of historical climate. They have built a robot able to shave 0.05 micrometer slivers along the growth lines of fossilized clam shells, giving a resolution of less than a day. "We can get you mid-July temperatures from 400 million years ago," he says.

Hey, Barack Obama, you know, The Day After Tomorrow could happen after all. On your watch. One season all balmy in the Northern Hemisphere. The next a frozen hell. Sure you don't want to go to Copenhagen before the glaciers block your route?

Wait, you're suggesting

Wait, you're suggesting Obama sign Copenhagen because of a fear of Global Cooling? Is it 1976 again? Can you explain what happened to your fear of Global Warming?

Also, am I now expected to pimp some random product at the bottom of my comments? Seems dumb, but I'll give it a try.

Understand difference between regional and global?

The comment about cooling is a classic example of an inane inability to differentiate between local and global. The risk, as highlighted here, is of a 'mini'-ice age for Europe, rather than necessarily global.

"Global Cooling" in this route might derive from the albedo implications of covering western Europe with a sheet of snow/ice.

In any event, HA! HA! Love the inane commet.

Gulf Stream disruption

IPCC estimates have been seriously conservative. Gulf stream disruption is a serious game changer, Europe is likely to experience the worst effects. Colder temperatures in that region may slow the off-gasing of methane deposits locked in the permafrost. However, other components of the climate system are likely to change quite significantly as well, consider what would happen to Southeast Asia without Monsoon season. But, you really can't predict what will occur, I'm particularly worried about whether methane hydrate deposits locked at the bottom of the ocean will bubble up with increased frequency or not. The phase change as the climate system shifts into a new dynamic equilibrium is likely to be a violent one.

Accelerating a solution

Conservatives are generally kooks, they genuinely just want to delay the process.

I want action on climate change immediately, more than anyone I know. But, lets be honest here people. Waxman Markey is a bad program, carbon taxation is much better. Cap and Trade is largely becoming a gimmee to corporate interests and the finance industry which are already heaviliy invested in carbon credits. Consultants are also going to achieve a windfall as they have to begin conducting inventories. Investment bankers are just drooling over something else to speculate on, and resultant price fluctuations will not send a clear signal to industry, I do not want it to be responsible for another bubble.

There are a range of academic voices that have legitimate concerns with cap and trade. The tax works in a simple way and applies at limited amount of points where energy is sold. That gets passed on to the rest of the industry. Just take the money from taxation and use part of it to offset increases in the cost of energy for the poor, and use the remaining money to invest in energy efficiency and renewables in this country and abroad. Utilize that money as loans at low interest rates and watch it cycle through the system and repay itself through efficiencies. Send clear signals through increases in the carbon tax, the system will pay for itself.

The glaciers have melted

The glaciers have melted idiot. They're not blocking anyone's route to Copenhagen any time soon.

Do the math

The Greenland ice sheet contains 2.85 million km³ of ice, and the ice is currently melting at a rate of 240 km³ a year. A little simple math therefore tells us that at the current rate, it would take 11,875 years to completely melt the whole ice sheet. Even if you assume that the ice starts melting at ten times its current rate, that is still over a thousand years. I think therefore comparisons to what happened when the glacial lake covering most of northwest Canada burst its banks are not apt.

I am not a denier. I believe that climate change is real and man made. However, I think you folks need to do a little simple math before making absurd statements.

Nothing you can do about it

It is pure vanity that makes someone think they're going to stop global climate change. Climate cycles happen with or without the human ants crawling around on the earth's surface.

The only real possibility is that governments are covering up the climate change cycles by keeping people preoccupied with carbon credits/taxes.

Go with the flow on this one, there is nothing you can do about it except plan. Europe is going to be frozen tundra. If you're in the US I suggest purchasing property in warm places like Presidio, Texas.

When (not if) the earth tumbles into the next ice age, places like Presidio, Texas will have nice weather for about 900 years.
