New Technology May Help Iraq Vets Regrow Limbs
We all know that animals such as salamanders and newts can regrow body parts, but humans? An experimental technology using extracellular matrix—a fine powder derived from pig bladders—may lead to just that.
Thus far, the growth has been limited to soft tissue and blood vessels, and the only human test was on a doctor’s brother who had (conveniently) chopped off 3/8 of an inch of the top of a finger. By using extracellular matrix, the missing part regrew in just four months. Except for a scar, "it was like the finger I always had,” he said.
Less than half an inch of finger may not sound like a lot, but for the five Iraq vets testing the technology at a center in Texas it may mean the difference between fumbling for a pencil (or a fork, a hammer, etc.) and being able to pick it up. And as amputations are a key injury in this war, scientists are hoping that the new technology may one day lead to full limb regeneration. Stem cells are of course an important part of this debate. “Fetuses can regenerate just about everything,” a scientist involved in the extracellular matrix therapy said. Most recently, human stem cells implanted in rats’ damaged spinal cords reproduced and fused with the rats’ nervous systems to repair function. This gives hope that paralyzed GIs may one day be able to regain at least some of their mobility instead of having to rely on expensive prosthesis.
With all the potential of biotechnological help for vets, why is Bush not behind stem cell technology? Bush says he won’t allow the intentional destruction of human embryos, but he seems perfectly happy to witness the mental and physical destruction of the nation’s young men and women. Bush’s opposition to stem cells is not just hurting those injured today, but may actually be keeping researchers from helping others down the line.

This story reminds me of a trip to Las Vegas. I said to the blackjack dealer that I wish I could get back even. The dealer replied that the best way to be neutral is not to sit down.
Soldiers often say they "sacrifice" by “serving” in US military in Iraq or Canadians in Afghanistan so that we can be free. They repeat the Bush mantra that “fighting over there so we don’t have to fight over here”. HOGWASH...BS...CRAP.
In reality, they sacrifice their lives limbs & sanity for money, education and the thrill of the violence. Arab victims are nothing more than collateral damage.
They kill, rape, torture & plunder for profit for the puppet masters. Philippines, Grenada, Central America, Mexico, Somalia, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan. Always the same shit.
The rhetoric of fighting for freedom and democracy is a LIE. Soldiers return home & seek approval, appreciation & honors for terrorism, torture, and murder.
The US military train the poor working class to murder, steal & plunder for the power hungry US corporate machine that the Bush Cheney White House represent - Oil. Defense. Security.
The war in Iraq is not an aberation. It is just the recent chapter in a long line of aforementioned invasions for empire. Now American soldiers kill along side mercenaries who are unaccountable to both Iraq & US laws. Mercenaries!
Greed, death, war, perpetual war, genocide. Neoconservatives along with Kissinger, Cheney & Bush should all end up being tried as war criminals in the Hague and sent to that fine prison they love so much south of the Florida keys.
Moreover, each & every soldier in the US military should reread the constitution & their oaths. From the Joint Chiefs to the GI in Iraq.
Finally, if the Bush Cheney White House insist on hitting Iran militarity instead of doing the diplomatic route, then the military should turn their guns on the Vice President & President.
The world is moving backwards with these two homicidal maniacs in charge. Enough is enough.
There is hope.
Robert Gates is seperating Cheney from the Defense department. The Iraq Study Group & Bush I had had enough with the idiocy of Rumsfeld. With Gates they can circumvent Cheney's pet projects for the greater good of the country & civilization and not solely the country's OIL elite. The proof is that Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said there was no evidence the Iranian government was supplying Iraqi insurgents with highly lethal roadside bombs, apparently contradicting claims by other U.S. military & administration officials.
Former National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski’s in his testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on February 1, 2007: damned the Bush Regime’s war in Iraq as “a historic, strategic, and moral calamity.” Brzezinski damned the war as “driven by Manichean impulses and imperial hubris.” He damned the war for “intensifying regional instability” and for “undermining America’s global legitimacy.” Brzezinski concludes his testimony with the statement that it is “time for the Congress to assert itself.”
Nothing in the MSM. Barely a word of his testimony.
And then there was the Nov elections. The people said STOP. Clearly, Congress better do the right thing in the coming days, weeks, and months.
Congress & Gates better scrutinize every military decision these two bozos make.
655,000 dead Iraqis. Over 3000 dead American soldiers & counting. And Bush/Cheney want to attack Iran. That is delusional insanity.
Oh yeah...If you don't want to gamble & loose your money don't go to Vegas. If you don't want to fight & loose a limb don't go to Iraq.
While all of the above comments may be true I am still hopeful that this new technology will work.
I have a genetic weakness in my back that I inherited from my father and my son is now feeling also. After experiencing the available surgical and non surgical answers to this problem I hope that one day people like me will benifit from the ability to grow new body parts instead of suffering for the rest of our lives.

I could not agree with you more. Stem cell therapy is not a political hot topic. It is hope for the millions of suffering and dying patients in need of a cure. Sure there may be hope in other things like adult stem cells and nanotechnology but embryonic stem cells provides a likely route to helping millions get their lives back. Let's not put road blocks up that can help find cures for the ill. I suffer from a chronic illness caused ironically by amputation by a doctor. Unfortunately the only viable solution is to grow back what the doctor has removed. Stem cells are the key. I hope some day I can be cured or at least treated.

One thing people are probably not aware of is that the only positive results thus far are from ADULT stem cells, not fetal stem cells. Research companies want to use the fetal stem cells because they are cheaper, even though they have yet to produce credible results. The current program for regrowing heart tissue using stem cells and extracellular matrix is with stem cells harvested from the patient's own spine.

wow all of the people who are "taking a stand" against the war and "exposing the horrible truths of the bush administration" are all fucking hypocrites, if you really cared you would go out and do something about it, instead you sit in front of your computer screens complaining about a problem you know you'll do nothing about, and don't call the U.S soldiers terrorist there just kids trying to make a life for themselves. the real terrorists are in office
