Weird Weather Watch: This Year Is the Hottest on Record
Spotted on ThinkProgress: Thus far, 2007 is the hottest year ever. That includes both land and sea temperatures. Check it out:

What's especially scary is all the dark red where permafrost used to be.
So have you dusted off your bike and unplugged your chargers yet?

It is the sunspots. They should peak around 2011 and knock out our satellites. That will change your life.
Help. We need warm weather here so the fishing will improve.
Record-low ocean temperatures this week have been recorded at Pacifica, Monterey, Morro Bay and Diablo Canyon. The cold water temperatures have also contributed to the cool, blustery weather in the area this spring.
These cool local temperatures are an exception to a worldwide warming trend. Globally, this April is the third warmest on record, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Central Coast fisherman,
Fish do better when there is more oxygen in the water. That's why most commercial fishing is in far northern and southern waters, away from the equator. Cold water dissolves more gas, including oxygen, making life far more abundant in cold waters.
As the waters warm, your fish stocks will be depleted even if we do manage to regulate fisheries well enough to maintain populations rather than overfishing them.

Not here, we need warmer water to bring up the good fish from Mexico. East coast is not the same as West coast in this regard.

Well, the physics is the same everywhere. In the tropics, the fish congregate around the coral with large desert-like areas all around. The rich waters are farther from the equator. Perhaps the fish that normally live where you are have been so horribly overfished, as most of the East Coast of the U.S. has, that the native fish are long since depleted. But, warmer waters bringing non-natives north will never be more than a temporary answer.
Suzy Sunshine,
Sorry I missed your comment before. Solar caused global warming is indeed a good point. I've seen a bunch of peer-reviewed articles on the subject mostly from 2003 through 2005.
One article estimated between 5 and 30% of the total planetary warming. The rest of the articles I saw seemed to stick to 5 - 15% of the total warming we see. So, sticking with the highest mainstream estimate of 15%, we're still left with the other 85% of global warming being human caused.

You are mistaken Scott. The sun is currently at its most active for 300 years. That, say scientists in Philadelphia, could be a more significant cause of global warming than the emissions of greenhouse gases(e.g. gas from animals raised for food) that are most often blamed. Per BBC report.

Opah is a unique, special fish. It’s like a very rich tuna. The Opah range all the way to Hawaii, and usually prefer temperate, warmer waters. But when the Albacore(likes warmer water too) show up off the Central Coast, the Opah come along too. We are waiting for the water to warm up to bring the Opah and the Albacore. Rockfish like the cold water(population has remained steady for the last 25 years), but they have too many bones. Tuna is the king of fish and we pray for warmer water.

Suzy Sunshine,
Do you have a link for that? Does it reference a peer-reviewed article?
Capt. Morro Bay,
Tuna is indeed the king of fish. It is truly leopard of the sea. We should not eat it for the same reasons we do not eat leopard. It is slow to reach maturity and reproduces slowly. It is truly a fish that cannot be sustainably harvested. It is also very high in mercury.
None of these, however, are your problems. This is a problem of economics and regulation.
While you're praying for warmer water, why don't you also think about the conditions that took away the native fish from the region? I suspect you'll find overfishing, fertilizer run-off, and a number of other human factors responsible.

There has been a sudden ocean cooling, per 2500 smart floats , 2003-2005, the oceans lost 25% of the heat that they gained in the last 50 years. This was not predicted nor explainable from the climate models.

This past winter saw record snows in the Rocky Mountain region as well as an unusually cold spring in Alaska. Currently, we are seeing a Memorial Day snow advisory for the Colorado Mountains. Wyoming being buried in a May snowstorm and parts of Canada are still enduring winter. In addition, South Africa just set 54 new cold weather records with some parts seeing snow for the first time in 33 years as snow and ice continue to fall. A massive snowstorm in China has closed highways and stranded motorists. And finally, winter has arrived early in Australia as the snow season is off to a promising start for the winter recreation industry.
