Drilling Really Did Trigger Mud Volcano

800px-Home_sunk_by_mud_flow.JPG Final verdict: the Indonesian village-eating mud-erupting volcano known as Lusi was triggered by oil and gas drilling two years ago. The eruption began in May 2006 when Lapindo Brantas, owned by the family of billionaire Indonesian Welfare Minister Aburizal Bakrie, began exploratory drilling of a borehole named Banjar-Panji-1. Since then Lusi's oozing eruption has inundated rice paddies and villages, destroyed 10,000 homes and displaced 30,000 people. Now a study published in Earth and Planetary Science Letters shows exactly how drilling caused Lusi's birth. Lead author Richard Davies says, "We show that the day before the mud volcano started there was a huge ‘kick’ in the well, which is an influx of fluid and gas into the wellbore. We show that after the kick the pressure in the well went beyond a critical level. This resulted in the leakage of the fluid from the well and the rock formations to the surface—a so called ‘underground blowout’. This fluid picked up mud during its accent and Lusi was born.

Lapindo Brantas initially claimed the Yogyakarta earthquake, which occurred two days before and 155 miles away, caused Lusi's birth. However the oil and gas company now confirms the published data on Lusi are correct and their drilling was the trigger, reports Durham University.

The question now is whether, as some suspect, Lapindo Brantas will simply fold into bankruptcy to avoid paying penalties or reparations. Especially now since another study by Davies at Durham University suggests Lusi is beginning to collapse—precursor to becoming a huge sunken caldera, worsening the environmental disaster.

The ever-growing environmental disaster of fossil-fuels.

This week I was in London and attend a presentation from both sides of the fence (LUSI). What was interesting at the Monday press conference was that Lapindo Brantas denied Davies published data was correct. In fact, they said only 1 graph was corrected by them and that was it. What was shocking (especially for Davies team) was the announcement that the BOP was opened not long after the "kick" which if true this could discredit Davies conclusions, in fact it will be nearly impossible to say drilling caused the mud volcano, and no way close to the 98% certain Richard claims.

The next day,Lapindo Brantas presented a compelling presentation that showed drilling wasn't the cause. After both sides had presented the event chairman asked the audience of 80 peers what they believed.... they were not convinced that drilling had caused the mud volcano, LUSI.

Not good for Richards claim.

Lapindo Brantas claim Davies never had the correct data. In fact we all know Richard was keeping his source confidential....

Check out New Scientist Oct 25 edition...

To me it really questions what Richard Davies and team have been promoting for the past 2-years.

I've now arrived in Cape Town, and am looking forward to this debate. If Richard Davies and team can't convince the AAPG audience, then I imagine Lapindo Brantas would be thinking about calling lawyers in to take over.

Not good for the industry at all.

I wonder what the London Geological Society is thinking, not to mentioned the executive board at Durham University whom supported Richard and his team.

...many press releases from Durham University promoting the drilling factor....not good for the image for this conservative university.

Looks like we'll all know soon enough.
