Richard Reid tries to blow up an American Airlines Flight 63 from Paris to Miami with explosives concealed in his shoe. He is overpowered by flight crew and other passengers. He will be indicted on nine counts, including use of a weapon of mass destruction and attempted murder, and will receive a life sentence. Evidence will come to light that Reid receiving training at al Qaeda camps in Afghanistan, and the Wall Street Journal will report that he traveled extensively scouting sites for terrorist attacks.
