SEN. TOM HARKIN (D-IA)

On March 12, 1993, Sen. Harkin purchased between 1,000 and 15,000 dollars worth of stock in Chesapeake Corp. Chesapeake is a paper milling firm based in Virginia.

Ten days earlier (March 2), a bill was introduced in the House that, if passed, would appear to injure Chesapeake. The bill was, H.R. 1164: FOREST BIODIVERSITY AND CLEARCUTTING PROHIBITION ACT (Last Action--July 19, 1994, Pending). This bill has 103 cosponsors (90 Democrats; 13 Republicans).

The President and CEO of Chesapeake (J. Carter Fox) is on-record in opposition to legislation that restricts clearcutting operations.

Notes: Sen. Harkin is # 5 on the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee; # 3 on the Senate Subcommittee on Agricultural Research, Conservation and Forestry.
