With one of the most tourist-dependent economies in the Caribbean, BVI has depleted its mangroves with coastal development and punished its coral reefs with sewage and industrial pollution. Boat anchors are another major destroyer of corals here; since the neighboring U.S. Virgin Islands cracked down in the late '80s, cruise ships have increasingly dropped anchors weighing anywhere from one to five tons on BVI's reefs.
