Pat Buchanan

Pat Buchanan feels vindicated. His failed campaign in 1992 was based on the idea that the voters of the United States wanted a more conservative president than George Bush. And this time around, virtually all of the G.O.P. candidates were in an awful hurry to prove his point. His early successes seemed to show this as a smart move, but a few white supremicists in his campaign office and furter missteps on the campaign trail has left Buchanan's star fading.

Pat is quick to point out his opponents' sudden rightward conversions. The front-runners, Bob Dole and Phil Gramm, he calls "leap year conservatives." They don't really care, he says, about the "moral crisis in America." They only talk about abortion, affirmative action, welfare reform, and immigration every four years.

Sure, Pat talks about them all the time, and you have to give the guy credit: apart from everything else, he's consistent in his opinions, however socially backwards they might be. Never count Pat out, though: he can not only polarize an election, but the masses as well. And if you don't think Pat's aware of that, we've got this bridge in Brooklyn...
