An undercover police officer recorded Almonte and Mohamed Alessa making statements about terrorism and jihad. They allegedly said they had tried to join fighters in Jordan and discussed traveling to Egypt and Somalia to join the mujahideen. After intensive FBI surveillance, they were arrested as they tried to leave the country. "If one of them went to the bathroom, they were followed," said one official.
