Puerta, along with Fanny Barrera-De Amaris, Uwe Jensen, Adriana Mora, Carlos Romero-Panchano, Elkin Alberto Arroyave Ruiz, and Carlos Varela, was arrested as part of Operation White Terror, a drugs and weapons sting. Puerta was a high-ranking member of the United Self Defense Groups of Colombia (AUC), a right-wing paramilitary group. He placed the orders for weapons including shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles, and thousands of assault rifles, grenades, and pistols. He was sentenced to life in prison.
