Padilla traveled throughout the Middle East, sought entry into Al Qaeda, and was allegedly trained how to deploy a "dirty bomb." President George W. Bush designated Padilla, an American citizen, an "enemy combatant." He was put into military custody for more than three years before being returned to the federal court system for trial. He was never charged with the alleged dirty bomb plot. Adham Hassoun and Kifah Jayyousi were also charged in connection with Padilla. He was sentenced to more than 17 years in prison.
