Kandasamy was head of the American branch of the Tamil Tigers and operated a front organization called the World Tamil Coordinating Committee. An FBI search of the groups office turned up boxes of records that confirmed Kandasamy's support of the terrorist organization in Sri Lanka. He faced a sentence of up to 20 years in prison. The judge in the case questioned whether it was "a more obvious or garden variety terrorism case, where our security interests are compromised and the safety of our citizenry is in jeopardy."
