You put all the things I have been thinking the past few weeks into coherence and did it with eloquence and greater clarity than I have seen on this subject. People act like these cuts are from somewhere in la-la land—they're not. They're so close it could kill you.
It's the same story every time. Whenever one party acts in a way where the only logical answer is that they are acting in a (slightly) more virtuous manner than the other, the theory is immediately disregarded by pointing out that neither party is ever disinterested. Therefore, any explanation that requires believing that one party is acting in a more morally indefensible fashion than the other is always painted as wrong. The sad truth is that sometimes one party acts worse than the other.
They aren't just talking about abortions. A "procedure" could be anything from a pelvic exam to removing a cyst or tumor. If you don't like abortion, don't get one. This is a war on women's health.
mojo, i like the stories you've been posting the last few days. for awhile there it seemed like it was getting tabloid-y with the constant rehashing of certain idiots that like attention.. so glad to see you turning away from that fluff
The reporting was hard and often tricky to sort out. I owe a lot to Jesse Dukes (who recorded all of the interviews—and I hope will produce a radio doc), Joe Kloc (who waded through mountains of legal material to shore up the reporting), Alec Soth (especially for the amazing portraits of the workers), and to Clara Jeffery (for the great edit and the courage to run this thing at a length that most magazines wouldn't even consider). It was a true group effort. But, most of all, I have to thank all of the workers—not just the few profiled here—who decided to tell me their stories and give me access to their medical records. They placed a lot of trust in me, and I hope the article does them justice—and, just maybe, does them so good.
According to Perry the Secessionist, Texas is it's own country anyway and doesn't have to abide by US Federal Law. <shrug> I can't figure out, though, why he's thinking about running for President of a country he doesn't want to be part of ...
