McCain's Style
McCAIN'S STYLE....John Judis on John McCain's increasingly slimy campaign style:
McCain himself has clearly demonstrated that he'll do anything to win. In 2000, he ran an honorable campaign. Leave aside what he advocated he tried to win on the merits. This year, he has been willing to distort and lie about his opponents. It really started with the way he dealt with Mitt Romney's positions on the Iraq war.
Indeed it did, and it's something worth keeping in mind. Steve Schmidt has obviously been responsible for some of the recent change in tone of the McCain campaign, but it didn't start with him. It started with McCain himself, who, in the days leading up to Super Tuesday, cheerfully and repeatedly smeared Mitt Romney as a guy who wanted to surrender to the terrorists in Iraq. It was a plainly bogus charge, but it was one that McCain peddled without compunction for an entire week and it was one of the things that put a final nail in Romney's coffin.
McCain's revolting campaign style isn't something he had to be talked into by a cabal of ruthless advisors. He genuinely likes this stuff.

does anyone remember Nixon
Whatever McCain's personal feelings are, what we're seeing is the Republican 'do whatever what it takes' attitude towards winning elections. E.g., Romney was no angel in the primaries-- 'double Gitmo', anyone?
Bullies, thugs and vituperative adolescents. Pretty much summarizes the Republican party.
I don't think McCain was ever as honorable as he was made out to be, but now that he's taking Rove's advice, he comes off as weak and ineffectual. Having Palin on the ticket emasculates him - the right wing doesn't even remember who's at the top of the ticket. It's embarrassing.
Don't forget his bogus claims that "ROMNEY PROVIDED TAXPAYER FUNDED ABORTIONS"
http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/mccains_misleading_mailer.html
Add to that the fact that McCain accused Romney of not being supportive enough of the Bush tax cuts, which McCain himself actively opposed and voted against.
McCain is an liar. Plain and simple. And all of this came out on the eve of the Florida primaries, which is particularly sleazy since Romney couldn't adequately respond.
Also, this is the moment I realized that McCain is dishonest, childish, and maybe a little bit on the unintelligent side:

McCain learned the lesson of 2000. Slime wins.
I'm no fan of Mittens, but McCain was a total dick to him during the primary. I get that politics isn't "beanbag" but I knew then what the press is just figuring out now: McCain's nickname "McNasty" was well earned. But looked what happened then. You had some articles that called out McCain on his distortions, but that largely didn't do anything.
I just can't fathom voting for someone who would do this kind of stuff to get into office--you get the sense of desperation because clearly he feels the clock has run out.
Obama should have a Senator Have you no honor moment on the TV.
he has been slimed enough- and enough in the media have recognized the slime as such -- that it will be an authentic denunciation.
Kevin, I was going to send this as an email, but that doesn't seem to be working. Consequently, I'll make this comment "en clair".
After the apparent, at least temporary success of McCain's descent into Rovian/divisive-identity-based politics, I detect a note of handwringing and perhaps fatalism creeping into your posts. Let me suggest an alternative: Let us all simply try to do more to work for Obama's election. For blue-staters like you and me, that could include phone-banking or increased phone-banking into the swing states. For swing state residents, that would mean getting out and canvassing door to door for our candidate. And for everyone, that could include contributing more money.
I'm not going to worry at this point about the American people making another mistake. I'm just going to do what I reasonably can to try to push in the right direction.
Cheers,
Nate
I'd like to see someone who is a better write than me write McCain's apology (given in November or December of 2008) for the way he ran his campaign. "My Friends, I'm sorry about the way I conducted my Presidential campaign. It was less than honorable. Choosing Sarah Palin was cynical, reckless choice..."
Hmmmm. In 2000, in the South Carolina Republican primary, the campaign of the future commander-in-thief alleged that McCain had fathered an illegitimate black baby girl, thus derailing McCain's then-leading campaign.
McCain fondly embraced Bush.
In the 2008 campaign, McCain lied about Romney's views on Iraq.
And at the 2008 Republican convention, Romney praised McCain without reservation.
So maybe McCain's hug of Bush was just a form of ritual Republican karma, paying in advance for his upcoming sins to be committed prior to Super Tuesday 2008.
Wow. I just saw the ad the McCain people tried to put up today, called Lipstick. It's been taken down everywhere but at the campaign's website, because of complaints from CBS. Speaking of cynical - it's simply breathtaking. Not only do they take Obama out of context, they follow up with a quote from Katie Couric taken out of context. These people make me sick. This person, Steve Schmidt, needs to be drummed out of public life along with his mentor, Karl Rove. They are poisonous.
Bravo, Nate. Let's get going.
Apparently you've forgotten McCain was a POW.
This is Karl's 4th major campaign of fear, smear and lies, with the lots of help from the MSM and the religious right; So far he is batting 100%. I'm not counting the biggie, the Iraq War!
All you have to go back and look at the first race between junior and Ann Richards... rove's game plan has not changed.
The only thing that has changed, McCain sold his honor and soul to rove and the religious right!
McCain is acting as a man who has bet his life on the outcome, putting all his chips on Red and campaigning as if he has nothing to lose. When he does lose (there is no doubt in my mind) his life will be over. He will be forever be remembered as a dishonorable failure.
McCain sold his honor and soul to rove and the religious right!
Please. McCain sold his honor and his soul to his North Vietnamese captors long long ago. Since then, it's been one long sad parade of adultery, divorce, bribery, corruption, lying and selling out the honor of the United States.
Having Palin on the ticket emasculates him - the right wing doesn't even remember who's at the top of the ticket. It's embarrassing.

Uh cmac, from its recent overreaction, it appears that the left wing also thinks that it is Palin who is at the top of the ticked.
What overreaction are you referring to? Drawing the conclusion that McCain's willingness to name a political neophyte to a position that could land her one heartbeat away from the presidency, without vetting her!, demonstrates poor judgment? I'd say that reaction is spot on.
The feeling in this country is like it was shortly before the Iraq invasion: all lies, hysteria, and impotence.
I agree on the Romney point, which I think has been unappreciated.
As for this:
In 2000, [McCain] ran an honorable campaign.
Bob Somerby would beg to differ, and with good reason. Remember Richard Quinn?
The Honest Man
There once was a man who could tell no lies
His eyes grew fixed on a noble prize
Off he set on an epic quest
While The Other faced a similar test
Yet Honest Man believed HE was best
He smeared and lied because he knew
deep inside his heart was true
He wanted to lead
For that right he'd beg and plead
"Yesterday isn't today
But tomorrow could be,
It doesn't matter what I say
Can't you people see, it's me!?"
It was apparent, though, he had changed
Morals, priorities rearranged
We're not certain The Other will end ahead
What's certain is this: The Honest Man is dead.
