The Press Fights Back....A Little

THE PRESS FIGHTS BACK....A LITTLE....Via Sullivan, the latest from the Sarah Palin wonderland is her visit to the UN. The purpose of the visit is to, um, expand her already substantial experience in foreign affairs, and the McCain campaign wanted all the networks to cover it, of course. But they didn't want anyone asking Palin any questions. And then they decided they didn't even want reporters present, even if they kept silent. Just a camera, so that Palin's smiling face would show up on the network news deep in discussion with important foreign leaders.

But what do you know? Apparently the networks actually balked at being used quite so baldly. So the McCain campaign backed down and is now allowing one (1) CNN producer in the room along with the camera operator. But still no questions, I gather. Wouldn't want to put Palin under too much pressure, after all.

This is suppose to be a triumph for the press? Give me break, one producer doesn't mean a thing. The McCain camp gave the press cover to completely cave in yet one more time.

wtf? Seriously... Who does this woman think she is? Dick Cheney?

no profile pic for comment author

SHE. WILL. NOT. BLINK!

And you are dreaming if you think the media won't continued to get played.

The media is one collective eunuch and I know that's an insult to uenuchs.

So, McCain drops dead. Palin has to face down Putin and thread a tricky needle in a face to face or Ukraine gets forcibly annexed. At some point in the summit as foreheads sprout beads of sweat does Karl Rove demand deference be paid Ms. Palin or...OR ELSE!....? Or maybe she "has the flu" and sends an emissary to convey her concerns, maybe James Baker. Should be an interesting four years.

I know that some members of the press read this blog. Ok boys and girls, when are you going to blow the whistle? Sarah Palin could be President of the United States in less than a 6 months. Do you really want a President who can't be trusted to handle a few questions from the press at a photo op?

The reformer is becoming formless

no profile pic for comment author

Oh, given Palins past history of throwing her (R)mentors under the bus McCain will prolly stick her in Cheney's bunker and we wont see her for months on end.

The Bubble Girl.

She hasn't yet had a press conference. And probably won't either. It's never been done before. Read my lips: never.

Really, this is like getting engaged to someone, but not letting them meet your parents until after the ceremony. "Here's a picture Mom, doesn't she look nice!"

CNN should borrow Jessie Waters from Bill O'Reilly.

Why do the right-wing nutjobs obsess with Obama and Ayers? That is so lame. There's nothing there - zilch. Ayers is mostly nutty, but he's not really a scary bomber/terrorist the way the nutjobs would like to think of him.

As for Palin, the story really should be how she's continuing to avoid the press. You know why none of the media will touch that with a 10 ft pole? They don't want to burn the bridges. But that really should be the story - this sort of thing is absolutely unprecedented.

I wish John the Perfidious could just say what the real deal is.

"I sold my soul to the devil. He promised I'd live through my first time. Trust me."

Jake, there's also a good bit of "Did you see how they treated a...woman! Did you see that?! Boy were they mean, and to...a...woman! Those cads! Where's my fainting couch?" No man alive would be getting the treatment (or lack of treatment) Palin is. Can you imagine a VP nominee Senator Jim Webb, combat vet and accomplished author, hiding out and refusing questions from the press? McCain's choosing of Palin and his (and her) assertion she's ready from day one to be President if necessary should automatically subject her to personal press scrutiney. But no, we have to pay her deference. Up is truly down. And she gets away with it solely due to her gender. "Leave the woman alone, can't you see the stress she's under!" Nuts.

Eric,

I'm sure left-wing nutjobs wouldn't let it go if McCain were friends with Ayers. But you seem to miss the key word here: nutjobs.

It's nutty. There's no "there" there.

Biden can say whatever he wants these days, because nobody's paying attention to him. By contrast, the microscope's firmly on Palin, and so far what it's shown is a whole lotta nuthin.

Is it common for people like Palin, with all her accomplishments, to give a speech at the UN?

Did other VP candidates out of nowhere do this?

no profile pic for comment author

Karl Rove selected Sarah Palin as McCain's running mate precisely to appeal to weak-minded, ignorant, dittohead dupes like Eric Blair. Clearly he knew what he was doing.

The ass of the McCain campaign is showing badly on this one.

At this stage, even a moron knows that any person of substance WOULD WANT to speak to the press to get this annoying issue off the table.

Palin clearly isn't dumb, but the training sessions must be going very very badly for this to continue the way that it is.

My guess is that the McCain camp has discovered that she's a dynamo of self-confidence, and probably a whippersnapper at memorizing details. But unfortunately, I'll bet she can't put much of it together and they've really been testing some worst-case gotcha scenarios and I'll bet she's faceplanted miserably.

If this hasn't been the case there is absolutely no reason to keep her away from the millions of people who should be ready to be have their minds blown by her incredible acumen and understanding of all things govmint,

Palin is clearly a joke at this point, but we've given the presidency and vice presidency to plenty of jokes in the past, so it could happen again. More people need to write letters to editors, etc, showing their incredulity and irritation at Palin being given 'the wraps' treatment from McCain's gang. It really is odd and the people need to start grousing - not just on liberal islands like this blog, but in the streets, cafes, editor's pages, etc.

Again Jake, if the press is prejudiced against Gov. Palin why would she go in front of them and face questions like, "Do you have pictures of the actual birth of Trig which will prove you are the mother?"

I guess for the same reason Barack had to answer stupid questions like "why aren't you wearing a flag pin today?" Palin's not avoiding the press because of stupid questions, she's avoiding them because of the real ones.

And Obama's holding a press conference right now. He held others just last week. Where have you been Eric? Hiding under a rock?

Eric,

Here's video of a recent press conference where Obama answered questions about the economic crisis. The date was 9/18/08. Go ahead, take a look, and listen closely to the questions he was asked by reporters. Why can't Palin do the same?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubBFIw6HedQ

I do not think it is too much to ask Palin to participate in a similar press conference where she is asked questions about the economy, foreign policy, or her record as mayor and governor. Why the big production by the McCain campaign to prevent her from answering questions? How are voters supposed to know what she thinks if the only time we see her is when she's on the stump giving the same speech?

And regarding Obama, he's been through the wringer at press conferences - remember the April press conference about Rev. Wright? He didn't hide - he got out there, talked to the press, answered questions, even gave a speech.

I ask again, why can't Palin answer questions from the press and clarify her comments about the economy, foreign policy, abortion, her governing of Alaska, Troopergate, energy, and the list goes on? These are serious questions and not questions that should "stump" a candidate. Why can she not answer them?

This is Roves minions at work. Palin gave it away when she said she listened to SNL with the sound off.

Pitiful. Obama and Biden shouldn't waste one millisecond talking about this white trash ignorant bimbo. Let the press skewer her and rise above the fray. In the meantime, Biden should issue a press release saying he will only agree to a debate when the Republicans name a legitimate VP candidate and not just a shill for the Christian Coalition.

Eric Blair wrote: "... why would she go in front of them and face questions like, 'Do you have pictures of the actual birth of Trig which will prove you are the mother?'"

NO ONE in "the press" has ever asked her such a question.

And you are a pathetic phony.

"Wah wah wah. Poor widdle Sarah Palin. Nobody in the press gives her any luv. Everybody LOVES her, except those meanies in the press, who are so in the tank for Obama."

Jesus. Eric, do you take yourself seriously? At all? Do you read your posts before hitting the "Post" button?

Because they read like the posts of a whiny little bitch. This makes you happy, having to defend such a candidate that way?

steve duncan,

And she gets away with it solely due to her gender. "Leave the woman alone, can't you see the stress she's under!" Nuts.

Now now, don't be mean. I heard Aunt Flo's in town with a visit from the Cardinal. It's time to change the filter. She's too wet to plow. She's saddling old Rusty and riding the cotton pony while planting cotton. She's having the painters in while on a hunt for Red October. She's closed for maintenance and it's arts and crafts week at Panty Camp.

You know.

Guess I just fell asleep when those things start - like most Americans. Obama repeats McCain's positions very well - he is a good copier. -Eric Blair

Huh, copying? Show me an election where tax cuts werent used as a political canard.

By your logic McCain is copying Buhs Sr.

I finf it ironic that Palin, who said shes ready and that shes a Pit Bull, and that shehas nothing to hide, has to refuse press engagements, under the dubious rational that shes not getting respect, because of her lack of experience.

Did you know you can see Afghanistan from Sarah Palin's front yard?

no profile pic for comment author

Of all the hideous aspects of Sarah Palin being nominated as a VP candidate, this wall around her to avoid the press has me pissed off beyond anything else. How Dare They!! You'd think she'd want some more exposure before the upcoming debate. The way the McCain has handled this whole campaign has been despicable.
