More Conservatives for Obama
MORE CONSERVATIVES FOR OBAMA....James Joyner on Ken Adelman's endorsement of Barack Obama:
While Colin Powell, Lincoln Chaffee, Susan Eisenhower, Julie Nixon Eisenhower, Jim Leach, Richard Riordan, Bill Ruckelshaus, and others can be dismissed as outside the conservative movement, Adelman can not. Perhaps, at some point, people will take these complaints about McCain and the direction of the party seriously rather than as an excuse for character assassination.
Hey, even BoJo agrees! Unfortunately, he sort of ruins his endorsement at the end by suggesting that if Obama wins maybe this will finally put an end to all that incessant complaining by blacks about how they're treated in America. But that's BoJo for you. Londoners sure do have odd taste in mayors, don't they?

I think you should reread what he says. I don't think he is saying what you claim he is saying.
You may wish to reread it too if only because my guess is that a lot of people inside and outside the country will feel similarly.
If you want to convince them otherwise, you should first understand what they are saying. If you want to differentiate them from people who feel as you claim Bojo feels, you should understand the difference.
If you think the country should have a conversation on race, well, shame on you for flaming anyone that tries. Or anyone that says anything you're uncomfortable with.
I thought that it was especially poignant that Christopher Buckley overtly endorsed Sen. Obama and was reviled and summarily ostracized from the very publication that his father founded. I wonder what would have occurred had Wm. F. Buckley, himself, endorsed Sen. Obama...
Still don't get it do you?Conservative and Liberal only have meaning when you have a job and a non-failing Economy! The new term for both is -Desperate!Bush has pretty much done in the Middle Class by completely ignoring every warning about the loss of the Automotive Industry due to high gasoline prices! What could he have done you ask-Threatened Big oil with "Windfall Profits or Progressive Taxes. Released oil from the Strategic Reserves, or (shudder) use bailout money to subsidize gasoline prices! Now that is really far out you say, my response, not as far out as our economy and the firms that used to employ American workers! Point is-Bush DID Nothing, Said nothing, and was marked "Present" on the biggest Job Loss in American History1 Great work G.W.-another disaster to add to your Presidential Library Diorama-Hope it has "W." to watch along with his "Master of Disaster!" panorama!
Not so impressed by Adelman's endorsement. He drips with contempt that some woman could be invited to play his manly-man arms control games. Notably Colin Powell managed to endorse Obama--and criticize Palin's experience and readiness--without this sneering contempt. Probably because as an actual servicemember, he learned some respect. (And may have learned it long before).
Hey, anything that further divides the R's is great, but count me unimpressed by the latest opinions of the he-man national security club members.
Brojo agrees with Ken Silverstein at Harpers:
"But having Powell and Adelman sign up with the Obama movement is about as uplifting as when Obama endorsed ballistic missile defense (the scaled down version of Star Wars) during the second debate. It's conservatives who should be cheering."
Brojo -- long time no see.
I don't see them as "signing up with the Obama movement" so much as repudiating McCain. I heard Adelman this morning on the radio and he explicitly said, he'd rather have a conservative with Obama's temperament to vote for but, given the choices, he'd go with Obama.
I do hope you're not going to claim there's "no difference" on policy. The differences may not be as large as we'd like, but they're real nonetheless.
Avoiding the first person in comments at Drum's Mother Jones' blog limits Brojo from posting comments here.
The thing is, in regards to "maybe people will take these complaints about McCain and the direction of the party seriously rather than as an excuse for character assassination," the very people who would take these complaints seriously are those who making the complaints. The Republican intellectuals who are the ones who are realizing the nature of the complaints made, and are acknowledging them, and are increasingly agreeing. The rest, those who disagree with the complaints, are not going to acknowledge their merit. If they did, they'd be making the complaints themselves.
Both McCain and Obama are ultra-liberals by traditional standards of conservatism, so what's the difference?
"Londoners sure do have odd taste in mayors, don't they?"
OK, listen - right now, you do not get to criticise us for our weird choices of elected official. Our guy just saved the financial system of the entire developed world. What have you got? :)
Boris Johnson was elected on one of the most extraordinary cases of media bias I've ever seen.
The Evening Standard, and its parent, the Daily Mail (the Rothermere paper famous in the 1930s for being the voice of political appeasement with the Nazis, and given to rag baiting 'social conservative' journalism ever since), waged a full time war against previous Mayor Ken Livingstone.
Boris was a joke, a man with no experience in governing a large urban centre, and no experience as a cabinet minister-- he was an MP and an unsuccessful editor of a small lossmaking conservative magazine. The most embarassing moment of the campaign was when he promised to bring back the beloved 'Routemaster' buses (the last one built in 1968) and when asked how much this would cost, he didn't know-- they're still working on that estimate.
Meanwhile the Standard (the only remaining evening paper, much read by commuters) wrote at least 4-5 articles in each issue in the 6 months leading up to the Election, alleging corruption in Ken Livingston's administration, and playing up his connection to Islamic terrorists.
The net result was that in the inner London Boroughs, Ken actually increased his overall vote, but not enough to offset an increas in votes from the commuter suburbs for Boris.
Since coming to power, Boris' inexperience in government and the impracticality of many of his 'policies' has been manifest. He is a buffoon.
