11 PM Update
11 PM UPDATE....I figured CNN would call the election at 11:01 Eastern, but I was off by a minute. They called it at 11:00.
....I guess I should be feeling a sense of excitement, but what I mostly feel is an immense sense of relief. Just a complete, unmitigated, totally drained sense of relief that George Bush will finally be packed up and sent home to Crawford. For just this moment, I don't even care whether Barack Obama will be a great president. I'm just grateful that for the next four years our president will be at least minimally competent and grounded in reality. Thank God.
....CNN has called Florida for Obama.
....Colorado goes for Obama. Obama is up to 338 electoral votes so far.

Well that is it, Obama has won and the AP said McCain has called Obama to conceded.
Obama will say somethink live any minute.
I am proud to call myself an American tonight. Tomorrow, every parent in this country can finally say to their children "you can grow up to be President" not just the parents of little white boys.

This is a useful corrective to GOP ideologues who like to point to vast red spaces on the map out in the Mountain states where few people live. Ill be updating the map periodically throughout the evening as new states are called by the major news sources.

Watching McCain, OMG his incite groupies don't know how to move forward - that is what incite does to people, they don't know what to think, they so believing in McCain's incitement message, because it didn't lend it message to move on.
It's like McCain had no idea what his candidate campaigners were actually doing. They booed McCain tonight because of what his consultants did, the over incitement. They were not McCain's consultants but Bush and Cheney's consulants.
How ugly is that? McCain's people can't move on. Sad statement for the Repug party.
Just heard McCain's concession speech. Without a doubt it was the classiest words I have heard from John McCain since the beginning of the primaries.

Ever notice how at inaugurations almost every outgoing president has that "it's your problem now, sucker" look on his face? In W's case it'll be especially appropriate, given what a mess he's made.
Good luck to Obama, and boy am I glad that it's him and not me that's moving to Pennsylvania Avenue.

The most interesting of the ballot propositions that I see on CNN is the Colorado "Human Life from Moment of Conception" which currently has 75% NO. That's a pretty extreme rebuttal of the Religious Right crowd --- I don't see anything else drawing anything near as strong a level of unanimity.
I don't care that we didn't get 61. Lieberman should have his committees stripped within 24 hours.
In fact, Reid should just pants the guy and kick him down the steps of the Capitol and make him persona non-grata at all Democratic functions.
If anything less happens, than Reid should join Lieberman.
I like the feeling of winning, even if it's not absolute giddiness. It's a sense of calm confidence. I feel as if things can get better, if for no other reason than the pieces are in place. He's not going to be perfect by any stretch, but, simply put, this is a fresh start. Hell, if nothing else, it's a chance to put the ugliness of the last eight years behind us.
Well, here's one Republican who knows what to do next.

My almost 12 year old son has followed this election pretty closely. He wears an Obama button to school every day. I have never discussed with him the signifigance of a black man being elected President. I realize it's better not to have that discussion. To him this is perfectly normal. That's why I sit here with tears of joy. I never thought I would live to see this day. This truly is a great country and we are a step closer to being all that we can be. enjoy this - the work has jsut begun
A truly gracious concession speech by McCain punctuated, however, by jackasses who insisted on booing every mention of Obama's name.
Also did anyone else notice the absolutely ice cold handshake McCain gave Todd Palin? McCain barely looked him in the eye. I think McCain must, for whatever reason, absolutely hate Todd Palin.
Mostly I'm relieved, it looks like its going about as expected, i.e. no really nasty surprises. But I will join Kevin in suddenly feeling old, as in OMG I'm older that the President (elect).
You're assuming that Bush and Cheney don't use some incident between now and the Inauguration to invalidate the election, dissolve Congress, and rule by decree.
I won't breathe a sigh of relief until Mr Bush and Mr Cheney are safely in The Hague in orange jump suits preparing their war crimes defense.

Here's an intriguing fact to ponder: When Barack Obama was born in 1961, the union between his black father and white mother was illegal in many states -- including my current state of Virginia.

Kevin, I totally agree with you. I'm sure we'll see many positive things from this new president, but most of all I am simply grateful that the horrible darkness of the past two administrations has been broken. No more torture, refutation of habeas corpus, refutation of posse, comitatus, rational tax policies, rational use of the military, rational management of the economy and the environment, and on and on. Yes, I hope for a new health care policy and other such things but at least we'll cancel out the severe negatives of the recent past.
Great night! Things are also looking up in the local races (Washington state). We will be a great country again. The country woke up and decisively rejected conservative policies.

One thing that struck me was that when ABC called the election and there was the Obama family on stage in Chicago I switched to other channels and saw CBS & NBC had gone to local reporting and with only PBS talking about it, but with no pictures of happy people.
How can they simply blank the screen and ignore the fact there are people who are happy about this outcome?
Later the other channels came back on and did good reporting.
Much later, after the 1st string reporters had gone off the air, I saw Dee Dee Myers and she looked anxious and almost desperate to get back in the game. I wonder if Obama has anybody in mind for press secretary.
I'll tell ya another interesting position for the upcoming administration: working with Joe Biden to get legislation from the White House to Congress and passed into law. More than in most administrations there will be a need for an activist WH, whether Liberal or not, to deal with the many challenges.
Another interesting area for employment is in the area of world trade. That's just begging to be improved and I haven't a clue who might be ideal to lead that.
Obama said he's going to need the help of many people. I suggest that many people who could be expert in such areas as international trade should consider a little public service and send in their resumes.
Jeez, where does one send a resume for this situation? I wonder how they've done it in past transition administrations?
