Inauguration 6

INAUGURATION 6....I know this isn't quite in keeping with our shiny new postpartisan spirit, but watching Marine Executive One take off almost brought tears to my eyes.

As always the Marines do the dirty work. Always Faithful.

Have you ever been at a party with a great many people, all friends, and everyone is having a grand time? Then a guy walks in that is marginally tolerable but as the evening wears on everyone gravitates to the opinion they wish the dumb bastard would just leave? But before he leaves in comes a few of his dumb bastard friends and they're somehow even more grating than he is? Finally the whole sorry troop gets the message and departs. The party is wrecked and it'll be several weekends down the road before anyone musters the energy or enthusiasm to have another go at it. That's 1992 through 2008 in a nutshell.

Seeing that helicopter lift off was the best part for me.

no profile pic for comment author

I couldn't help but think of the ending of the Wizard of Oz. Watching the helicopter depart was like the wizard in his balloon leaving oz, no longer in control, waving happily to the masses. Too close to reality.

no profile pic for comment author

It wasn't Marine One at that time. "Marine One," like "Air Force One" is a call sign used by the Service aircraft carrying the current President.

no profile pic for comment author

Take who away?

;-)

no profile pic for comment author

The call sign for the helicopter carrying Bush away is Executive One, AFAIK.

no profile pic for comment author

I was too busy throwing my shoes at the TV to shed a tear.

no profile pic for comment author

Actually, it is the "One" designation that is reserved for the Chief Executive. "Executive One" is reserved for any non-military aircraft that transports the president. The whitetop that carried W to Andrews today would likely have used a standard military call sign.

Did you notice that Cheney borrowed Jack Abramoff's hat for the inauguration? Isn't that fitting.

no profile pic for comment author

Enjoy it while you can.

It's all down hill from here, folks.

no profile pic for comment author

Is Bush really, really gone?

no profile pic for comment author

Steve: "Enjoy it while you can. It's all down hill from here, folks."

Thank you for both your optimism and your vote of confidence. Want to borrow my rope and razor blades?

What a great picture - can I buy a poster of it?

We won't have GW to kick around any more. Our feet are sore anyway. Walking, working, and standing up is a much better use of them. We're ready.

Upon seeing that Bush was going to get to fly in the 747 back to Texas, a part of me wanted a revenge snub for Blair House where Obama just says no, give him a little plane.

It is probably a good thing Obama is not as petty as I might be.

How long did it take for the Bush Legacy to affect the Obama Presidency?

Bush's Chief Justice buggering up the oath of office, marring an otherwise transcendent inauguration ceremony!

This will go down as the first of the innumerable land mines that await, but Obama handled it with grace and aplomb - a hopeful sign.

Jill Biden is rockin' those boots.

I was of necessity away from TV and the Internets most of the day, but when on the car radio I heard the words "Former President Bush" I felt quite happy.

no profile pic for comment author

No worries, Kevin, it was a beautiful moment. Like the shadow of the last eight years leaving our nation's capital. And for the first time in eight years, a lefty like me feels like I'm welcome to say "our nation."

no profile pic for comment author

Good riddance to Bush.

Sadly, he is expected to end up in Dallas, significantly lowering the tone of the entire Fort Worth/Dallas metroplex.

For the past 8 years I've gone to the LA Federal Building every work day. Each day upon entry I was greeted by photos of Bush and Cheney smirking/sneering down at me. Today I went to the building and the photos were gone! Hooray!

no profile pic for comment author

Enjoy it while you can. It's all down hill from here, folks.

Just as long as you remember who drove off the cliff.

Nice Boots, Jill. You Go-Go Girl!

Now if we are really lucky Dubya will quickly succumb to Alzheimers, like Ronnie did, and we won't be subjected to years more of his smarmy smarty-pants act.

no profile pic for comment author

Let's face it: if some question comes up that Obama or his folks need an answer to, would anybody think to call W.?

no profile pic for comment author

I was just relieved when Bush's helicopter didn't turn and fire on everyone below...

no profile pic for comment author

I was on the mall today and the best part was when the helicopter came up from behind the Capitol building and flew down the length of the mall, 2 million people cheered the end of our national nightmare and waved them off the national stage. As Rev Lowery said today, everybody say "Amen."

Finally, the miserable failure has lost his power.

"I was just relieved when Bush's helicopter didn't turn and fire on everyone below..."... Can't stop laughing at that remark.

How might an antichrist develop in this world? Rather than growing to see every way as the right way and work to make the best of our differences, he would see every way as the wrong way. He would look into people and see only their narrowness of mind, their smallness. Each person he sees is just another step on the stairway to power- the more he can understand how their minds work, the more he learns how to show them what they desire. As he grows he sees further and further into the depths of suffering that we experience- he does not know the meaning of love, but he could convince himself that love is just another word for success- and he is successful. He sees his power as the answer to our problems- but he knows no answers because he falls further and further away from the truth. He knows how you hurt and so you trust him. But does he love you? Where will he lead you? What does he know how to do, but to drift into the dark emptiness? And where is the world in all of this? Aren't you caught up in consumerism? Have people let their identities take over? and aren't these identities simply egos that are clinging to a structure, clinging to each other? Are you afraid of who you will be if it all comes crashing down? Do you cling tighter still, eager to do your part? Will you all just deperately push against each other, bracing against either side of the chasm?Let go of that. Let go of your worries. Trust in God's love. All you need is love.

Piece out, Peace in

no profile pic for comment author

Ah, who will you all blame for your problems now? Personally I'm just glad I'm not in America any more to see what the newly elected celebrity will do with it.

Finally! I couldn't take so much incompetence and petulance.

I'm not even American and I cried your friends north of the border might actually love you again it's like 8 years of a bad marriage and its finally over. Go America!

I was one of the people with tickets but who couldn't get through due to the bad planning and lack of crowd control. I was pretty bummed. While walking back to the subway, though, I happened to catch sight of a bunch of people with cameras poised, aimed at the Capitol's east facade. We watched, and then saw the Obamas and Bidens escort the Bushes out. It made the whole day worth while!

I am glad that all the Bush haters have what they want most.... I hope that Obama lives up to their high expectations as for me I am very worried that we will now become a socialist state run by Pelosi, Reid, Frank, Schumer and Obama... I am all ready tired of paying for the lazy and taking care of the illegals... And now I wait for the tax increases to pay for it all.... Good Luck Obama your gonna need it

no profile pic for comment author

Bush gets a brain now?

no profile pic for comment author

Wow, it looks like partisan politics is alive and well here on this forum. Does that mean we can critique an inaugural address that was devoid of real substance and direction (although delivered by one of the most fantastic talking heads in the world)??? There will be no honeymoon for Obama based on the attitude here.

no profile pic for comment author

Screw all of you. You are near sighted and bigoted. You have no idea what goes on behind the walls of any government building, and until you've served you should vote for who you believe in but leave history to be the judge of the service rendered. This is the kind of thing that immediately makes me feel less hopeful that Obama will be able to engage the American people to quit with the selfishness and move forward with passion. The world isn't a perfect place - the sooner you get that the better.

no profile pic for comment author

Please get that right - the Marine, Air Force, Coast Guard, Army, Executive ONE callsigns are reserved for the President...who stood there waving. TWO is the Vice President. W's chopper is most likely called by it's tail number.

no profile pic for comment author

Kevin Drum apparently doesn't fully understand the things he posts or the "One" meaning of the aircraft(s).
