Quote of the Day
From New York governor David Paterson, explaining to legislators why they should settle their leadership fight and get back to business:
“Think of the lobbyists who have invested in themselves to try to persuade legislative leaders and legislators on issues.”
Give him credit for thinking outside the box, anyway.

I always wear a little wristband.
It says, "Think of the lobbyists". It keeps me grounded.
Reason no. 346 why this man
Reason no. 346 why this man should not be governor.
I would find the competition between California and New York to be the worst governed states in the nation to be more amusing if I were not a resident of the latter.
Now we know who this clown really represents!
Truly an inspiring leader! I can only pray that New York is still blue enough to elect this clown to a full term--- his "merits" as governor notwithstanding (so the party can hold on to the governorship).
How in the world did this fool ever get elected to anything? What were the people of his district thinking/smoking?
Mitch Guthman
So now it's official and no
So now it's official and no longer even shameless for these people to openly acknowledge: New York State is governed in no way, shape, or form, differently than a straightforward Banana Republic. Someone show me how I'm wrong. All I see, everywhere I look, is Crony Capitalism 101. Thailand might well be more committed to principles of transparency and democracy. Espada and Montserrat are just the tip of the iceberg. Paterson is here admitting who ACTUALLY owns the govt. Let's toss him out! Ballot uprising. NOW.
Wow! Is he actually

Wow! Is he actually publicly standing up for lobbyists?!? If Paterson weren’t already a lame duck, I’d call for his head. It's time to get Albany out of NYC's hair forever. The House of Lords up there is to volatile and capricious when it comes to all NYC matters. Just this week...a little corruption and a midnight defection, and BOOM, the Republicans are the majority party! And Paterson's admission of "lust in his heart" for lobbyists is beyond the pale. Perhaps it's time for NYC to secede from NY State, and reform as a city/state under the federal banner...and maybe jettison Staten Island while we're at it. We could be like Hong Kong with bagels! For now, I urge New Yorkers to act locally and vote out every city councilperson who voted for the extension of term limits, and, if there is a Santa Claus, hand old Michael “Warbucks” Bloomberg his walking papers!!! As for Paterson and Republican-occupied Albany...let’s let Paterson get gay’s married, and then we’ll sick Andrew Cuomo on him.
bad karma
And Bloomberg's NYC is going to exterminate 2000 Canadian geese that have the misfortune of living withing 5 miles of the airports.
Who's gonna care when the polar ice melts and floods the place?

Has anyone told him about
Has anyone told him about migrations? I swear we need to teach people more about the birds and bees.
In context, it wasn't so bad
From the Daily News story Kevin linked to:
-----
He called on lawmakers to end this standoff and get back to the "people's businesss," adding:
"Think about the advocates that came up here on issues," Paterson said. "Whether you agree with them or not, they rode the buses up here in January and February on Tuesday - the lobby days."
"Think of the lobbyists who have invested in themselves to try to persuade legislative leaders and legislators on issues, and think of all the people around the state who are waiting, they’re on their seats to see what is going to happen with property taxes."
"...all of those interests , not the legislative interests, have gone down the tubes because in Albany a few people thought that it was time that we hold an election. And why? Because they didn’t like the rules? Or somebody was rude to someone?
"This is outrageous. This is as unbelievable as anything I’ve seen."
-----
The ellipses may represent additional interests he listed.
Obviously, his point is that there's a lot of people who have business with the Senate that isn't getting done because of this ridiculous tantrum. He certainly wasn't singling out lobbyists' issues above anybody else's; they're just part of the mix. And some of them do have perfectly legitimate issues.
But no one wants to hear about lobbyists ...
they probably have even lower approval numbers than Darth Cheney
I worked for the NYS
I worked for the NYS senate. Every Tuesday buses of REGULAR people come up to the Capital to lobby the legislators. This is who Paterson was referring to. That's why he specifically mentioned the buses. Understandable, but he wasn't referring to lobbyists as we think of them when we think of lobbyists. He was talking about t he buses of regular p eople who used to visit our offices a few times a week from community organizations and such.
Stopped making sense
From the vantage point of an Atlantic Yards watchdog:
Between Paterson's lust for lobbyists and the recent resignations of top brass at the Empire State Development Corporation and Metropolitan Transportation Authority, he has no sense of what's going on or how to move forward. He's not even even pretending to be in control. No wonder developer Bruce Ratner is calling all the shots on this "state-sponsored" project.
"Won't someone think of the lobbyists?!"
Can't believe nobody beat me to that.
Spitzer
And Spitzer's the one who got busted, go figure.
Yeah, great quote. Lobbyists
Yeah, great quote. Lobbyists are more in business than legislators.
