Quote of the Day

From Sarah Palin, still governor of Alaska for the time being, taking advantage of the power of social networking to continue her self-pity fest on Saturday:

How sad that Washington and the media will never understand; it's about country. And though it's honorable for countless others to leave their positions for a higher calling and without finishing a term, of course we know by now, for some reason a different standard applies for the decisions I make.

Um, what higher calling are we talking about here, Sarah?  Freeing up your schedule to whine more regularly on your Facebook page?

But here's an interesting thought: Maybe she really means this.  Seriously.  Maybe she really doesn't get the difference between resigning your office to, say, accept a nomination as Secretary of State or ambassador to China, and resigning your office just because people are mean to you and the whole governor thing has gotten kind of boring.  This is Sarah Palin we're talking about, after all.

I'd say that this post just

I'd say that this post just about matches the vitriol of right-wing sites on Hillary Clinton. What is it about these women? The fact that they are women who dare to play on national political stage, or what?

Your characterization of

Your characterization of this post as vitriolic and comparison of it to the kind of hatred that was thrown Clinton's way which among other things involved numerous death threats and suggestions that she was a murderous, closeted lesbian and a drug dealer, is mostly just nonsense. There is really no point in taking it seriously.

But what interests me more is that this is of a piece with how people usually defend Palin's absurd and logically incoherent ramblings. As you have done here, there is rarely any attempt to grapple with the substance of any criticism. Drum points to a rather obvious flaw in Palin's specific assertion and rather than defend her assertion, or indeed offer any kind of rational defense for her consistently ridiculous behavior, you lean heavily on rather specious claims of sexism.

Like Palin, her defenders seem to believe that nothing is, or can ever be, her fault. It is always about immensely powerfully arrayed forces, like bloggers, out to get her that cause all of her problems. This sort of thing is, it should go without saying, unpersuasive, but more than that, its pathetic and embarrassing.

False equivalence.

To first anwser your question "why?", While I can't speak for why the right wing reacts to clinton the way it does it's clear that your rhetorical question is nonsense on the left side, Elizabeth Dole, Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, Kay Bailey Hutchison and Condoleezza Rice were all very active on national political stage and didn't receive this sort of criticism.

While Kevin drum certainly has little kind words for Governor Palin I've yet to see it rise to the same level of vitriol as how Hillary Clinton gets from on the right, or for the same reason.

Palin behaves far more irrational then the average Republican and gets called out for that on the left. (the right as well, see krauthammer and Goldberg as recent examples)

Clinton acts like a standard run of the mill Democrat and gets far more vitriol on the right for her behavior then other democrats.

You are ignoring both differences in severity and actual underlying reasons in order to claim that both sides are the same. It's easy, it's somewhat effective, but like so many other claims of equivalence, cheap and wrong.

Actually, Condoleezza Rice

Actually, Condoleezza Rice did receive a great deal of hate from the left back in the day. Similar to what, say, Nancy Pelosi was and is getting from the right. As to differences in severity - I suspect they are in the eye of the beholder. I am neither left nor right, and let me tell you, the two sides look grotesquely similar from the middle.

I don't like calling troll,

I don't like calling troll, but first of all, when shift in position is taken into account as well, the vitriol against Hillary Clinton was far more pronounced on left wing sites than right wing sites, and secondly, there is no vitriol here, Kevin is spot on, there's a huge difference in quitting for no reason whatsoever and resigning to take a position at the President's request.

Oh Sarah

A litle something to help you go to sleep:
In 2012:
The unemployment rate holds steady at 12%;
Iran has just tested a nuclear weapon;
Three major banks have collapsed in the last six months;
40% of all houses are underwater from mortgages;
GDP has been in and out of negative territory for the last two years;
California and four other states have defaulted on their bonds;
And the Republican ticket is...Palin/Hucabee.
Finita la musica.

All I can say is that a Palin - Huckabee ticket is about as likely as the rest of the drivel in your prediction. Spend a little more time thinking instead of posting things on multiple blogs.

Goon squad.

Just two days after her press conference (intended to, you know, get attention from the press), Ms. Palin is siccing her legal goon squad on the press for writing about her.

I have no idea what underlies this weekend's events, but I bet it's amazing.

Palin

I think she's trying to pull a W on the Republican faithful with this stunt. Remember that poor George told his buddies that God told him to run for President. You know, he answered to a higher power.

Trippp

This is starting to remind

This is starting to remind me of the story of Laura Schlessinger, who saw Schindler's List with her son, began weeping, decided to embrace her Mother's Jewish heritage, and proclaimed that she had been called by God to be a Prophet!!

I refuse to call her by her stage name Dr. Laura, since her Doctorate was in cellular biology and had nothing to do with Psychiatry or even psychology.

Anyhoo, the delusions of grandeur seem to be similar in both cases. Palin seeks a way to fail upwards. Will she become a TV mensch, hectoring the lowly rest of us from her perch on high?

Time will tell.

You're completely full of s*** and completely offensive

God**** it Tripp, I have been calling Barret Hansen Dr. Demento for almost 40 f****** years and all he has is a masters in folklore and ethnomusicology.

As far as I'm concerned, she's Dr. Laura, and don't you go messing with my childhood.

Trippp

I really hope that was sarcasm

Dr. Demento never pretended to be anything associated with the medical profession.

"Dr." Laura's schtick is hectoring people while calling it counseling, and she claims to have a post-doctoral license in counseling. While technically true, her Ph.D was in physiology, and her counseling license is long expired. After a wild childhood, including posing nude, and cheating on her first husband, she decided she liked scolding people and being a modern day 'prophet' on talk radio was the best way to do it.

Like "Dr." Phil, she is nothing but an entertainer with a huge ego pretending to be a counselor.

If Dr. Laura had much to do with your childhood I pity you.

Tripp

jrw

Tripp, I think he was being snarky.

And I'm with you on "Dr." Laura...there should be a special place in hell for the likes of her.

Palin criticized Hillary harshly for whining about the media

Let's add hypocrite to the other adjectives used to describe Palin. Before she got a taste of it, Sarah Palin was highly critical of Hillary Clinton's complaints about harsh treatment by the news media.

Funny, I don't recall Palin

Funny, I don't recall Palin ever telling us just what exactly her "higher calling" is. Unless you count "Victory," but she never gave specifics about how her resignation would further that goal.

Or, in underpantsgnomespeak:

1) Palin resigns.
2) ????
3) Victory!
