Exquisite Corpses

I'm still nursing a lump in my throat after finishing Julia Whitty's extraordinary story "Gone," about extinction. Provocative and exquisitely composed, it's the finest writing I've come across since I don't know when. I just returned from Cambodia, where I went out of my way to see the Sarus cranes but neglected Orcaella brevirostris, the local species of river dolphin. Now I feel I should turn around and go right back, since they may also be running out of time.
By the way, the point Whitty makes about the eco-impact of the dastardly border fence adds to the outrage one feels about that particular form of idiocy. As Frost put it: "Before I built a wall I'd ask to know What I was walling in or walling out, And to whom I was like to give offense." Thank you for expanding my understanding of the "whom" in those words of caution.

As Whitty's wide-ranging article on the sixth great extinction points out, there are many factors threatening biodiversity on Earth. Global warming is not currently the largest factor in species extinctions, but that is changing as climate change—in the long term and on a global scale—continues to exacerbate existing threats to plants and wildlife and to add significant new perils as well.
While the article highlights our tremendous lack of knowledge of the species with which we share this planet, that only clarifies our responsibility to do everything we can to protect life on earth from the threats we now know about, with the goal that populations will be strong enough to withstand the impacts yet to come.

The Shadow Shoots Back

In "Riding Shotgun With Our Shadow Army in Iraq," Nir Rosen nicely highlights the critical importance of contractors and that the majority of such companies are overwhelmingly staffed by Iraqis—a fact missed by too many of the "drive-by journalists" who cover our industry.
While these companies are important in supporting Western stability operations, they are even more critical in Westernless peace operations—those incredibly difficult humanitarian security missions that the West has essentially abandoned, leaving them to militaries from the poorest, least developed nations on earth. U.N. bases in the Congo and African Union bases in Darfur are all supported—indeed made possible—by private-sector companies.
A recent poll conducted by my trade group, the International Peace Operations Association, revealed the startling fact that in terms of personnel participating in international peace operations, the ipoa would rank ninth in the world, ahead of South Africa, the United States, and Great Britain.

Deadly Denial

It's shocking to read Randall Patterson's "Not in Their Back Yard," about asbestos exposure in El Dorado Hills, California, because it is so eerily similar to Libby, Montana, where the primary reaction from most of the local leaders was to criticize the Environmental Protection Agency, downplay the science as "murky" or "gray," and berate any citizen who dared to raise a question about the level of danger.
As the documentary I directed (Libby, Montana, to be aired on pbs's pov this August) shows, more than 200 people have died in Libby, and hundreds more have been diagnosed with asbestos-related diseases. But the greater tragedy is that many of these women, men, and children could have been spared exposure to asbestos had the first warnings been heeded. If you are told that you are being reactionary or fear-mongering, do it anyway. Your health and your children's health is at stake.

Smoked

I have long refused to subscribe to publications that profit from the tobacco industry. Needless to say, I was appalled at your ad for American Spirit cigarettes. Not only does it promote a product inherently destructive to the health of its users and those around them, it endorses an industry that pollutes our democratic system, promotes pseudoscience while working to stifle real science, and has opposed virtually every progressive health care initiative in our nation's history.

I was disturbed by the full-page cigarette advertisement that appeared inside the back cover. Surely Mother Jones can find a way to generate sufficient ad revenue without contributing to the promotion of a highly addictive and ultimately lethal product. What makes this particular cigarette ad so insidious is its colorful adornment with sunflowers, windmills, and the words "nature" and "natural," which give the impression of an organic health food product.

Story from Mother Jones "Not in Their Back Yard" The "asbestos" which in reality is Tremolite, the most deadly form of "asbestos", one of only 2 asbestos types and 1 other mineral fiber known to be powerful enough to cause environmental epidemics in the absence of industry. was found on the school grounds in El Dorado County in 1997!! Not by EPA in 2005! EPA was notified of this find of course in 1997, but they did nothing at all, Which is what they did in Libby Montana for decades after science article after science article was published detailing the deaths. Libby even held public meetings in the mid 1980s, to alert the population as to what was occurring and EPA still did not respond. After the asbestos was found on the school grounds, the County of El Dorado Public Health Officer took two steps to cover it up so nobody would ever know. The first step was to replace the air intakes for the school, which were located directly in front of piles of asbestos. The second step was to spend 3 million dollars to attempt to hide the asbestos exposures that had occurred there for over 25 years, from EPA, by covering up the various asbestos piles and cleaning out the school rooms. They were trying to not be embarrassed when EPA came to town. Of course El Dorado officials had no idea what they were doing, so their clean up was found to be inadequate by EPA who spent another 2 million to clean the school. Irony of ironies, directly after this clean up, and EPA wasn't looking anymore, the school purchased gravel made up of white serpentine rock, composed of some 30% Chrysotile asbestos and approximately 7% Tremolite, and placed it for a road directly on top of the original "asbestos" find!! With no pavement over it. It remains open to the school children to this date. Based upon this exemplary behavior by El Dorado County officials, EPA decided to leave the whole asbestos question to their devices!! As if anyone in El Dorado County Government would ever tell anyone the truth regarding "asbestos" exposures!! Heck no they won't. They get elected to office by the money from people who develop the land. So do the officials EPA made a deal with to not super fund anything in El Dorado County. Meanwhile the largest known pure Tremolite deposits in the United States can be easily found at the surface on many people's properties, exposures occur every single day and they are moving thousands of more people onto these deposits as we speak. Not to be outdone, I have found the same situation in Amador County where the death toll already exceeds El Dorado County, by a lot...but El Dorado is catching up quickly. Other found the same situation with Tremolite only, in other counties. Of course California has 50 counties with serpentine (Chrysotile) asbestos present, not one death ever found associated anywhere with these Chrysotile deposits. But in the very few places in California where there are Tremolite deposits, the death toll simply jumps out of the records at a person. Dr. Marc Schenker at UC Davis has the goods on this. All of these deaths in El Dorado and Amador, from exposures 30 to 40 years ago, way before the main source of Tremolite was opened up in 1996!! Basically a person has no protection at all from asbestos poisoning in the United States. EPA officials allow exposures 1,000 times greater than is required to cause fatal disease, as a matter of course. (See Feds will check on Bayview asbestos San Francisco Chronicle August 3, 2007) .A person is actually in more danger from EPA than they are from Corporations who use "asbestos"!! Most exposures in the United States go completely unregulated so are substantially higher than the un protective levels adopted by EPA as a benchmark for safety!! What a complete and horrendous joke, perpetrated by Keystone Kops upon the innocent American Public. (See also "A dangerous lie" Missoula Independent July 27, 2007). Please also see Randall Patterson's comment regarding the book "Enemy of the People" at front of the hard copy of this issue of Mother Jones. "It's as if El Dorado County Officials were taking their lines directly out of Ibsen's Enemy of the People"...which of course they are..without knowing that they are because they are too stupid to read a book or understand it if they did.

Along the lines of the person complaining of tobacco-smoking ads, I was surprised to see that at the bottom of the page you had ads for people searching- free email address locators, background checks, prison inmate checks. I though that you guys were working against illegal spying- who's to say that the people using these sites are nosy neighbors or forgetful friends and not identity thieves or spam mongers?

I was shocked to find yesterday that an article like "Gay By Choice? The Science of Sexual Identity" could actually go to print in such an astute and up-to-date (politically correct) news journal. The author was clearly biased; MoJo could at least have included another article from the opposite view. I would be a hypocrite if I claimed that I didn't appreciate the left-leaning tone of most of your articles, but when it comes to prejudice or down-playing a certain group's rights, that is a line that has been crossed in the other direction. Personally speaking, I am bisexual (I found that out before this summer started,) and I do not believe that if one day I was feeling that I was under-appreciated as a straight person, I could say to myself "I'm going to be a lesbian today" and strictly be attracted to girls. I'm sorry, but we "gay" people just can't perform tricks like that. Nor, I'm sure, could straight people do that. Perhaps my bisexuality was spawned from my father's homophobic family or some subconscious influence from my high school's GSA, but that should not have an affect on my rights as a person or on my right to marry whomever I choose. We are all encouraged to be ourselves in some form or another as we are growing up- why should we be looked on as different when we do? If being out of the closet isn't an example of self-expression, then I don't know what is; it's takes guts and self-confidence to be "out" in any way, shape or form.

Like Ike: Petraeus for President? I don't know what Daniel Schulman smokes or puts up his nose, he is way off base on his comparisons to Eisenhower, Marshall or McArthur. The aformentioned finished business, in other words they put an end to WWII and had George Marshall's plan that ultimately saved the vanquished countries from total collapse. Get real there Daniel, you might compare him to General Patton, but that's about it. David Tearle Los Angeles, California

Janklow was the governor of South Dakota. Your failure to investigate 911 truth cannot be excused. I wonder how many crimes are solved on the same day they happen. Quite a few, I suppose. But consider how much time law enforcement spends solving serious crimes, such as murder. They may have a suspect on day one, but they are trained to do a thorough investigation - to gather sufficient evidence to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt. Now consider the crimes committed in this country on September 11, 2001. They were solved almost immediately, without investigation. Just hours after the towers were demolished, our government spokespeople knew who the perpetrators were. No investigation was necessary, even though thousands of people were murdered. Shortly thereafter, our government authorized war. Hundreds of thousands of innocent people have died as a result. All of those people were created by the same God as you and I. Our system of government does not work when guilt is not proven. Those who perpetrated 911 are now profiting from the endless 'war on terror.' We the people have been duped. Whatever you say about 911, I won't believe it until you prove it. I'm not alone; please join us.

This is from WCVB NEWS in response to your article on the prisons. Too Many people are in prisons for petty crimes, so petty they are not aware that they are commiting a crime. If every day you have more rights being taken away, how can you keep up with it? It also costs about $20,000.00 per year to keep a prisoner. How many people that are retire on Social Security get that much per year after paying into it all their lives? ROCHESTER, N.H. -- A Massachusetts man who insists his New Hampshire highway tokens are still valid just spent three days in jail because he insisted on using two tokens to pay a 50-cent toll. Thomas Jensen, 68, of Braintree, said the state broke a contract with him and everyone else who bought tokens by refusing to accept them after January of last year. He was convicted of theft of services for continuing to use tokens after they were phased out. ‘‘I gave the state of New Hampshire money for the tokens, and I expect to be able to use them,’’ Jensen told The Patriot Ledger.

Call for Impeachment Congressman Dennis Kucinich has introduced Articles of Impeachment, House Resolution 333, calling for investigation into the high crimes and misdemeanors committed by VP Richard Cheney. Twenty members of Congress have endorsed the resolution while those focused on winning the next election claim to have higher priorities. HR 333 Articles of Impeachment allege: that in order to deceive American citizens and Congress, Richard Cheney manipulated intelligence documents, fabricating a threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction and falsely alleged a relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda; he abused his authority to deploy U.S. Armed Forces and by so doing, subverted the national security interests of the United States and set the stage for the loss of [more than one million] lives; the loss of more than $500 billion in war costs; the loss of military readiness within the United States armed services; the loss of United States credibility in world affairs; that this unlawful invasion of Iraq will cause blowback; that despite no evidence that Iran has the intention or the capability of attacking the United States, and despite the turmoil created by the United States’ invasion of Iraq, the vice president has openly threatened aggression against Iran in violation of our constitution and international law. Please call the Capitol switchboard at 800-828-0498 and ask for the offices of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Judiciary Chairman, John Conyers; and your congressional representative. Insist that Congress cease funding war crimes, pass HR 333 and perform its constitutional duty to remove war criminals from the White House. There is no higher priority than halting genocide.

To whom it may concern, 10/03/2007 A CRY FOR HELP Please help the little person fight corporate America and their lies and false statements On, Feb. 16, 2006 someone representing Citigroup Inc at One Court Square, 14th Floor, Long Island City, NY 11120, submitted a rebuttal to Ann Luekeman, Consultant for the Department of Fair Employment and Housing at 111 N Market Street, Suite 810, San Jose Ca 95112, and the statement entered is false and full of lies . Ann Luekeman also conducted the interviews for the investigation and was also lied to by Jeff Ursino and Kathleen Munoz during their interviews. I feel that the case needs to be investigated due to the fact that the DFEH made their decision with false statements submitted by Citigroup attorney and their employees. Sheri Paulo, the Employee Relations director for Citigroup was aware of the false information submitted yet even though they/she said they would submit a new statement they did not and stood by the lies knowing they were lies. I was wrongfully termination, harassed, by Jeff Ursino, and I can’t understand how an attorney lies to the DFEH and then they aren’t held accountable. This is unethical behavior on all those whom lied and I have to pay for their lies. Citigroup violated several Ca labor codes in the process of firing me nor did Citibank follow their own firing procedures. I was not offered FMLA until months later. I am begging that someone out there will help a mother who was simply trying to work be a mom and a wife making a honest living yet the manager and supervisor both lied as well as the Citigroup lawyers. Their lawyers requested more time to answer the DFEH yet submitted false information and this is unethical, please help us. I have been on disability since I was fired on 12/13/05 via UPS, I did not know I had lost my job until 12/15/05 because I was out on a workers comp pending case when I was fired. Violation 132A.My last pay check was direct deposited into my checking account, it was not included with my letter of termination. I would like to know who submitted these false statements for Citicorp and or Citibank and Citigroup. I don’t have a team of attorneys as they do or the funds to hire the right attorney to get to the truth. Please help us. Sincerely, Damari Stratford 1291 Ord Grove Ave Seaside, Ca 93955 831-236-0112
