But the idea soon sparked outrage among more conservative members, with one councillor even denouncing poor Pooh as a “hermaphrodite”.

“The problem with that bear is it doesn’t have a complete wardrobe,” said Ryszard Cichy during the discussion. “It is half naked which is wholly inappropriate for children."

“The author was over 60 and cut [Pooh’s] testicles off with a razor blade because he had a problem with his identity,” she said.

Here's the thing, Winnie the Pooh should be banned but not because he doesn't wear pants. The LA ensemble Love, best known for the 1967 folk-pop classic Forever Changes, assumed a variety of guises during its turbulent and intriguing history. On the band's 1966 debut, frontman Arthur Lee and company displayed a heavy debt to the Byrds, though his songwriting was too original to qualify the band as imitators. By the time Love recorded Black Beauty in 1973, Lee was the only remaining original member, and the sound echoed the psychedelic hard rock of his friend Jimi Hendrix.

While this previously unreleased album isn't a lost masterpiece, it's well worth hearing. The quartet is brawny and nimble at once, while songs like "Young & Able (Good & Evil)" and "Lonely Pigs" range from romance to meditations on social justice and race. (Like Hendrix, Lee was a black man navigating the predominantly white rock-and-roll world.) Lee subsequently experienced extreme ups and downs, including jail time in the '90s and an overdue celebratory comeback after his 2001 release from prison, before passing away in 2006. Black Beauty fills in a significant gap in his story.

Mixed Media Music Mon, 17 Nov 2014 11:00:14 +0000 Jon Young 264541 at http://www.motherjones.com Elevate Your Mood With the Cool Ghouls http://www.motherjones.com/mixed-media/2014/11/cool-ghouls-swirling-fire-burning-through-rye

Cool Ghouls
A Swirling Fire Burning Through the Rye
Empty Cellar

Psychedelic in the sense of "anything goes," as opposed to tired DayGlo nostalgia, San Francisco's Cool Ghouls project a sloppy party-going-overboard vibe that belies their considerable assets. Guitars veer abruptly from snarling fuzztones to folk-rock chimes and back, while the cascading three-part vocal harmonies are sunny exuberance exemplified, but never fussy or precise, and the songs are downright catchy. As the Boston Globe recently pointed out, back in 2007 David Ehrenstein described Obama's campaign as such:

Like a comic-book superhero, Obama is there to help, out of the sheer goodness of a heart we need not know or understand. For as with all Magic Negroes, the less real he seems, the more desirable he becomes. If he were real, white America couldn't project all its fantasies of curative black benevolence on him.

Republicans later even attempted to make light of the stereotype with CD's featuring a song titled "Barack the Magic Negro."

Although the trope has been criticized for some time, researchers behind this recent study say it's the first "empirical investigation" into the matter.

(h/t Science of Us)

Mixed Media Race and Ethnicity Fri, 14 Nov 2014 19:47:31 +0000 Inae Oh 264791 at http://www.motherjones.com Book Review: The Unspeakable http://www.motherjones.com/mixed-media/2014/10/book-review-unspeakable

The Unspeakable

By Meghan Daum

FSG

In a series of essays reminiscent of a slightly restrained David Sedaris, Los Angeles Times columnist Meghan Daum comes off as humorously dysfunctional and occasionally deranged as she plunges into topics best avoided: her true feelings as her mother lay dying, disdain for motherhood, bad dating choices, courting of lesbians (she's straight), abject failure as a Big Brothers Big Sisters mentor and prospective foster parent, and even her awkward encounters with the singer Joni Mitchell. Bootlegged in part as Great White Wonder before the end of the decade, released officially in truncated and doctored form in 1975, and repeatedly bootlegged in numerous permutations since, these remarkable recordings found Bob and friends in back-to-basics mode, tackling a mix of enticing Dylan compositions (including "Quinn the Eskimo" and "I Shall Be Released") and rootsy covers with the verve of a boozy roadhouse ensemble. With a mind-boggling 138 tracks on six discs, The Basement Tapes Complete lives up to the hype. The performances range from sketchy fragments to fully realized pieces, many with surprisingly good sound quality. (The lowest-fi bits are consolidated on disc six.) The tapes also include obscure Dylan originals such as "I'm Your Teenage Prayer" and "I Can't Come In with a Broken Heart," while the covers revisit songs associated with Johnny Cash ("Folsom Prison Blues"), John Lee Hooker ("I'm in the Mood"), and Elvis Presley ("I Forgot to Remember to Forget"), among others. Endlessly fascinating, often surprising, and essential listening for Dylan fans.

Mixed Media Music Mon, 10 Nov 2014 11:00:10 +0000 Jon Young 264181 at http://www.motherjones.com See the Moving Artwork Commemorating the Fall of the Berlin Wall 25 Years Ago http://www.motherjones.com/mixed-media/2014/11/berlin-wall-fall-25-years

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, which for more than 28 years divided East and West Germany and became the defining symbol of the Cold War. On November 9, 1989, following a series of large protests that swept throughout Eastern Europe, East German officials hurriedly changed travel regulations to the West, for the first time allowing regular citizens to cross. The rules were supposed to take effect the next day, but East Germans swarmed the border stations and, as it became clear border guards were no longer willing to shoot, the gates were finally opened. Crowds from both sides began demolishing the wall, and for months Berlin resonated with the sound of people pecking away at the concrete.

A crowd celebrates atop the wall after realizing that guards have set their weapons down. Peter Kneffel/DPA/ZUMA

Running through a border crossing on November 10. DPA/ZUMA

A man celebrates atop the Wall. In said photo, Hodges and Navell point at each other.

Pretty typical stuff, and material for, at most, a quick news anecdote highlighting the mayor's community involvement. But Navell happens to be a young black man, a fact that must have something to with what happened next: Newscasters at KSTP, the local ABC affiliate, took the innocuous photo and quickly warped it into an exclusive report accusing Hodges of "posing with a convicted felon while flashing a known gang sign" and thereby instigating violence in their fair city.

In the same report, KSTP goes on to admit there is zero evidence Navell actually belongs to a gang. But they're certain he has "connections to gang members."

"She's putting cops at risk," retired police officer Michael Quinn told the station. "The fact that they're flashing gang signs at each other, showing solidarity with the gangs, she's legitimizing what they're doing. She's legitimizing these people who are killing our children in Minneapolis."

Here's a tweet from the story's reporter promoting the piece before it aired.

Mayor Hodges flashes gang signs with 2x convicted felon. But just to drive the point of how insanely racist KTSP's report truly is, watch the video below in which Navell discusses his involvement with non-profits like Neighborhoods Organizing for Change and how he's working to move on from his past.

"I made some mistakes in life," he says, while footage appears of him and Hodges posing for the photo in question. "I can't vote. I'm not ashamed to say that. But I'm working on fixing that right now so I can be able to vote for my next president."

Next up for KTSP? Well, word surfaced today that Obama is likely to tap US Attorney Loretta Lynch as the nation's next attorney general. Perhaps the station should stage a timely investigation into her gang affiliations, given this shocking photo:

AP/Seth Wenig

Mixed Media Media Race and Ethnicity Fri, 07 Nov 2014 21:22:00 +0000 Inae Oh 264346 at http://www.motherjones.com Here's a First Look at Your Long-Awaited Racially Diverse Emojis http://www.motherjones.com/mixed-media/2014/11/emojis-black-asian-racially-diverse

Hidden beneath the doom and gloom that was this awful Tuesday was an exciting update on emojis: diversity is on its way and we have PROOF.
