As John Oliver noted on the latest Last Week Tonight, the move was particularly significant because each offender was subjected to harsh mandatory minimum sentencing laws, which require low-level offenders to be locked up regardless of the crime's context.

"Ridiculously long sentences are not a great deterrent to crime," Oliver explained in his take-down of unfair sentencing laws on Sunday. "Prison sentences are a lot like penises: If they're used correctly, even a short one can do the trick.

"The truth is that mandatory minimums didn't just not work, they ruined lives."

While failing to reduce crime, mandatory minimum laws also disproportionately target minority groups across the country.

"There should be a lot more pardons and commutations," Oliver said. "But if we really want to address this problem permanently, we need states and the federal government, not just to repeal mandatory minimums going forward, but to also pass laws so that existing prisoners can apply for retroactively reduced sentences."

Mixed Media Crime and Justice Media Mon, 27 Jul 2015 13:57:58 +0000 Inae Oh 280661 at http://www.motherjones.com 35 of Bill Cosby's Accusers Posed for a Powerful New York Magazine Cover Story http://www.motherjones.com/mixed-media/2015/07/bill-cosby-new-york-magazine-cover

New York magazine just released its newest cover story, which features 35 women who have publicly accused Bill Cosby of sexual assault for one powerful photo series. The daughter of the late Little Feat leader Lowell George, she's a subtly compelling singer who conveys deep feeling with languid poise; her best solo album is a collaboration with art-pop genius Van Dyke Parks. He's a master of slick pop who's produced big names like Katy Perry, Charli XCX, and Kelly Clarkson. But for all their polish, The Bird and the Bee has always been about finding the aching heart beneath the glossy surfaces, and this striking fourth album is no exception. While Recreational Love ups the danceablity quotient slightly from previous outings, shimmering songs like "Lovey Dovey" and "Please Take Me Home" are simultaneously exhilarating (for their suave craftsmanship) and heartrending (for their raw emotion), revealing intriguing new elements with each hearing.

Mixed Media Music Mon, 20 Jul 2015 10:00:13 +0000 Jon Young 279741 at http://www.motherjones.com Caitlyn Jenner Just Delivered this Kickass Speech About Acceptance http://www.motherjones.com/mixed-media/2015/07/caitlyn-jenner-espy-arthur-ashe-courage

Caitlyn Jenner received the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at last night's ESPY's in Los Angeles, and used the opportunity to deliver a powerful speech urging fellow athletes and celebrities to understand the immense challenges trans people, especially teenagers, face everyday.

"It's not just about one person," Jenner said. As Mary Pilon points out in Politico:

…the total payout for the Women's World Cup this year will be $15 million, compared with the total for the men's World Cup last year of $576 million, nearly 40 times as much. That also means that the Women's World Cup payout is less than the reported $24 million to $35 million FIFA spent on its self-aggrandizing fiction film, United Passions.

And that disparity trickles down to the women's champ: The USWNT will earn $2 million from the victory, nearly 18 times less than the German men's team received after winning the 2014 World Cup ($35 million). Even the US men's team, which was bounced in the round of 16 that year, earned $8 million.

As BuzzFeed's Lindsey Adler writes, "When the disparity in pay for women athletes versus men is raised, the argument often veers toward television ratings, with claims that women's sports are watched by significantly fewer people." Although that argument may not hold up for American audiences, it's worth noting that early viewership figures for this year's World Cup suggest that women's matches, though steadily attracting a global audience, are still far below that of the men's World Cup (188 million on average).

FIFA generated much of its revenue between 2011 and 2014 from TV and marketing rights from the 2014 World Cup, and it remains to be seen how much money in commercial revenue the women's games will produce. CNN thought it had a stunner of a scoop: Gay pride was being infiltrated by Islamist terror!

CNN anchor Suzanne Malveaux crossed from the US studios to international assignment editor Lucy Pawle in London, who claimed to have spotted an ISIS banner amongst the rainbow-adorned floats at London's annual LGBT pride parade. A glorious exclusive! "I seem to be the only person to have spotted this," Pawle claimed. The segment was given the full, breaking-news treatment: Peter Bergen, the network's national security analyst, was even called in for his sober assessment.

The only problem? The banner Pawle spotted was a satirical flag adorned not with ISIS's logo in Arabic, but with butt-plugs and dildos.

Now the flag's creator has spoken publicly for the first time in a Guardian op-ed that is sure to make CNN execs, Pawle, and Malveaux squirm with humiliation. Why did Paul Coombs—a self-described "collagist" and "multi-media dildo obsessive"—make the flag? "Medieval ideologies and barbarism were being spread and recorded through that most modern of expressions, social media, with that flag ever-present," he writes in something of an artistic mission statement. "It has become a potent symbol of brutality, fear and sexual oppression. If I wanted to try and stimulate a dialogue about the ridiculousness of this ideology, the flag was key."

"The Pride festival is a pure celebration of the finest aspects of humanity: of tolerance, togetherness, acceptance and liberation, the polar opposite of what Isis stands for," he continues. "If there was anywhere where my flag had a voice, it was there."

Coombs also writes, "CNN correspondent Lucy Pawle described my flag as a 'very bad mimicry' but the only bad mimicry I could see was CNN's impression of a reputable news organization. What does this say about every other report that they broadcast? And why have they not mentioned it since?"

Boom. Great questions, Coombs. Indeed, the original report has been taken down from CNN's website.

Mixed Media Gay Rights Media Tue, 30 Jun 2015 20:42:58 +0000 James West 278791 at http://www.motherjones.com NBC Finally Dumps Donald Trump http://www.motherjones.com/mixed-media/2015/06/nbc-finally-dumps-donald-trump

On Monday, NBC released a statement announcing it was severing its business ties with Donald Trump following his recent remarks stating Mexican immigrants were "rapists" who carry drugs into the United States.

NBC announces it's ending its business relationship with @realDonaldTrump . pic.twitter.com/rVHlnHSBfK
— Meredith Blake (@MeredithBlake) June 29, 2015

The network will no longer be airing the real estate mogul's Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants.
