Our Educator-in-Chief Leaves Us All Behind

In tonight's interview on 60 Minutes - one which the Administration might rethink the wisdom of allowing - Bush, along with the stream of consciousness Clara details below, essentially told the American public, Congress, the military, the international community, all those who have questioned his latest strategy, to sit down and shut up.

"Scott, sometimes you're the commander-in-chief, sometimes you're the educator-in-chief, and a lot of times you're both when it comes to war."

Well, if he's anyone's educator, we're in for a hard lesson.

A telling moment in the interview (this one's not in the transcript, perhaps because it was not in the formal sitdown session) came when Pelley asked Bush whether multiple deployments, two, three, four of them for some, were fair to the troops and their families. Bush answered saying, "this military is motivated," (meaning, and I'm guessing here, that soldiers are more than happy to leave their families and return again and again to Iraq?).

But the toll it's taking on soldiers, pushed Pelley, who then referenced Bush's brief service in the National Guard:

Pelley: In Vietnam as you know, you served 365 and you were done.

Bush: This is a different situation. This is a volunteer army. In Vietnam, it was, 'We're going to draft you and you're going to go for a year.'

Hmm, so if we had a draft (which would be political suicide for the Administration and any Republicans hoping to trail it), then we could relieve our "volunteer" soldiers who are serving mandatory tours over and over again. I wonder why, Mr. President, it came to that, that we had a draft during a long, protracted war that called for more and more ground troops?

A draft, says Rep. Charles Rangel, who has repeatedly introduced a bill for one in Congress, just might shake our nation and its leaders into seeing the true cost of "acheiving success" in Iraq. But now it seems that those in need of convincing are few. On this the Administration stands relatively alone. Alone and in charge.

All you liberals are pathetic. Do ANY of you people actually know (meaning; talk with ? face to face) the stupid morons that vote for Republican? Bush and his "evil cabal" are there because large numbers of Americans (and humans in general) need a king. Bush, his Royal Court, and the Royal kiss-asses (all the Fox News apologist) are still worshipped by 35%+ of these voters. And, the military is loaded with them. The best thing this country has going for it right now is that our Royalty is systematically breaking the morale of the military, along with kids and parents of the peasant authority worshipers (all of whom hate you airhead liberals, btw)! And, YET, you liberals are bitching about it. Talk about confused? jeez.

What does a Moron have to do to PROVE he is insane?! Why did the "Bush Crime FAMILY" put their egos ahead of the Nation's Good when they failed to commit this creep? Obviously that stuttering is symptomatic of far more that Mommy and Daddy Authoritarian problems.

When he said that he was drafted I suppose what he meant was that it was because of the draft that he had daddy pull strings to get him into the National Guard. Without the draft he wouldn't have volunteered for that much.

The 'moron' does not have to do anything more, Jon. It's us who are behaving like morons by letting him keep doing what he does.

If Bush thinks everything is "on the table" when dealing with foreign policy, then I think everything should on the table when dealing with Executive stupidity. Elections: proven to have no impact. Cutting off funds: remains to be seen, but time is too short to dither--and that is what is happening. Folks like Rahm Emanuel and Joe Biden want to issue a "sense of the Congress" resolution as a courtesy to the office of the President, not to the jerk who sits in it. That might be alright if it were a normal jerk. This is a special case in which Chief-"dumb" and VIce-chief "dumber" are forging ahead, drunk on power and arrogant with presumed privilege. They are drunk on war and war-making.

If people want the picture to change, they will find themselves demonstrating in the streets or in the halls of Congress, demanding impeachment at the top of their lungs.

John Dean has written a 3 part article at Findlaw on the niceties of Congressional investigation and the tools they can use. I will be very surprised if Congress even gets to open the toolbox before wider war comes to pass.

The Bush/Cheney cabal lied us into this war, and now they are blackmailing Congressional Democrats into supporting escalation by holding our troops hostage.

The Bush/Cheney cabal, supported by rabid rightwing Republican congressmen have labeled dissent as aiding the enemy, short circuited the Constitution by subverting our system of checks and balances and proclaimed a new Unitary system of government that gives all power to the president.

If that isn't treason, what is?

Any congressman who fails to support impeachment of the Bush/Cheney cabal is equally guilty of treason. Any American who fails to support impeachment of the Bush/Cheney cabal is guilty of condoning war crimes. We can fool ourselves, but we can't fool the world.

The invasion of Iraq was a war crime, and now the war is lost. In the eyes of the world, the only credible way to atone for our National war crimes is to impeach the Bush/Cheney cabal and to try them for war crimes. Failure to do so will make us look like Nazi Germany.

The rabid right has been able to intimidate and fool a majority of Americans, but they haven't intimidated or fooled the world. We can only redeem ourselves by admitting our mistakes and punishing the criminals who betrayed and disgraced our country.

This could be our last chance to avert World War 3.

As i keep reminding folk, GWB is a one trick pony. Every time he starts a new activity, it's just exactly the same plan - MORE

Karl Rove names it "redeployment", "embedding" or the latest - "surge"; buts it means the same thing.

Nothing but death, impeachment, or the grinding horror of two more years will stop him.

Well stated rabblerowzer, did you go to impeachforpeace.org and send in your petition for impeachment? If not, do it. Then be prepared for a move from "QUASI MILITARY RULE" to outright military rule.If people don't wake up soon, this country could end up in worse shape than Iraq, after all we have people in charge that are worse than Saddam ever was!

"It was different then," answered Bush. "This is a volunteer army; I was drafted."
NONSENSE !: There was no draft for theNational Guard.
He had to pull strings to get in. Only another lie, out of so many.........

Would a recall be possible on this idiot? The country will not survive another two years.

I imagine those 58,000+ American soldiers that died in Vietnam, most of whom were drafted, would find comfort knowing that our President didn't feel obligated to service his country in Vietnam because he was drafted, or that the 3,000+ that have died in Iraq would feel relieved knowing that, since they were not drafted, their sacrifice were okay. Bush and Cheney are both cowards who believe they are above the law and the will of the American people. Impeachment may be the only thing left to return America to the American people.

John,

I have talked to Bush supporters about their reasons for voting for him. But lately it's just so much harder to find them. Most of them have slunk away in shame. The only remaining vocal supporters are the evangelical christian Talibanites, but I'm thinking they're suffering from Pope envy rather than looking for a king.
