The Gender Trap: Yes, or Yes?

Warning: I watched parts of the Democratic debate last night at the gym. This is the fate of the resident of the Pacific Time zone.

Watching Hillary Clinton smile as she listened to the final question, for a minute, I almost thought I liked her. But then the closed captioning caught up and I saw that the question had been, "Do you prefer diamonds or pearls?" Clinton's response was, "I want both."

Now a wave of really hating her passed over me. It's not just the starving children in Africa who can't afford precious gems—which, in case I need to remind you, have absolutely no function other than to advertise that the wearer has the money to buy something with absolutely no function. No, middle-class Americans with kids in school and mortgages can't afford diamonds and pearls. The right answer would have been, "I'm much more worried about getting our soldiers home from Iraq."

But now a wave of compassion for Clinton washed over me (yes, as a matter of fact, I am ambivalent about her). Any answer other than one which could be translated roughly as "I love jewelry" would have insulted the questioner. So Clinton was set up, something like this: "Okay, lady, so you're a politician, but you're still just a girl, right?" And she had to say, "Yes, that's right, I'm just a girl—a middle-class girl who loves to be pampered."

Now to add insult to injury, the MC then guffawed about whether he could ask the question to any of the other candidates—who are, you know, obviously not girls.

Because gender is the most obvious thing there is, right? Wrong. There are tons of people walking around who aren't immediately readable as male or female. Say it is obvious, as in Clinton's case. The debate question made it seem that her love of jewelry—and being regaled with it by a man who pampers and cares for her—follows just as obviously. Huge leap, people! And extremely misogynist.

Well, it turns out that the questioner had actually wanted to ask something about plans for a nuclear dump site at Yucca Mountain. So it was male reporters who planted a female questioner to ask a question that forced Clinton to say with a smile that yes, she did throw like a girl, and diamond's are a girl's best friend!

Does this shed any light on McCain's bitch problem?

By all appearances, Hillary could not truthfully answer that she is more interested in bringing the troops home. The evidence shows that she is more interested in her career than in anything else. For this, she and other Democrats are willing to enable war crimes. What comes first are calculations about how each vote or each statement will influence one's political career. This is both despicable and pathetic.

Hey Joe, you are sorely mistaken if you think it's only Democrats putting their political careers first. Sadly, that's just the name of the game-on BOTH sides (being that this is the way they get elected). As for the Hillary account, if you think about it, WHY would the reporter have asked such a question in the first place? Just think about what Hillary Clinton has to go through every single debate. The media thrives off of those subtleties that MUST reaffirm to the public that, yes, in fact, she is a woman. It's a disgrace to see that the media cares more about what kind of suit she is going to wear rather than what she has to say. Now, if she were a man, do you honestly think that a reporter would ask what kind of jewelry they prefer? I think that the JOKE she responded with was wittingly sly. She cares about the war and the "kids in Africa" because she is dedicating her life to making progress not just for this country but for the entire planet. So Hillary, I salute you for putting up with the pestering media and all those like Joe who will find any little thing to try and bring you down. You have more courage than I.

I have to agree that no matter what Ms. Clinton said she would be on the ropes. I think it's interesting in this day and age we're still asking women questions like that. I wonder why no one has ask the men a question such as which do you like better basketball or football or better yet do you like fire arms or going to Hooters better?? This country amazes me!

American politics are disgusting garbage. I don't feel like voting for anyone or anything any more. Truth is the furthest thing from the mouths of those who "lead in the polls." To hell with the polls.

Blitzer asked Hillary if NAFTA was a mistake. After 15 years, she finally admitted that "NAFTA did not do what many had hoped" That required a follow question since NAFTA brought about loss of jobs for millions in US and Mexico. In that context, the question about diamonds or pearls was obscene.
