Attorney General John Edwards?
Bob Novak has a report out that says unnamed "Illinois Democrats" are "quietly passing the word that John Edwards will be named attorney general in an Obama administration." Novak is a hyperpartisan bullshit artist who will make stuff up in order drive a wedge between Democrats, so it's hard to take this all that seriously.
But it does raise an interesting thought experiment. John Edwards is a passionate fighter for the poor, for labor, and for universal health care—he would be a wonderful addition to any Democratic administration. He would be a great attorney general, particularly because he could fight for workers on labor law issues and he could fight for the traditionally disenfranchised on election law. He could really reinvigorate the role of the Secretary of Labor. He could head a regulatory agency like the FDA, where his distaste for corporate power could combine with his passion for fair and affordable health care. And he would make an exciting VP choice for Obama, as I've said for quite some time.
That's a long-winded way of saying, even if he doesn't get the nomination, more Edwards! Of course, the Edwards folks probably don't want to hear that. They want to hear "Edwards for prez!" And that's why the Obama people are floating this rumor, assuming it's true: it gets the progressive media to laud Edwards' potential as an attorney general while further marginalizing his chances for the presidency.

Visualize this potential hijacking of the news cycle. After JE takes 3rd in SC, he continues to say he'll fight to the end. Then at a massive Obama event in a Super Duper Tuesday swing state, he just comes on stage and pledges all his delegates to the Illinois Senator. He could spend the rest of the campaign stumping for Obama. Barack, too, could have an attack dog.
The next Attorney General of the United States, John Edwards!!!!!!!
Any of the three will be great in key roles in a new administration. I would bring Al Gore and Bill Clinton in too. La Creme de la Creme together at last, to run this country through difficult times. That said, prosecute the clowns and criminals who got us into the mess we are in.
if you want to speculate, suppose obama & clinton lead edwards into the convention ... but neither obama or clinton can get edwards on board, and neither will throw their delegates to each other, so the one trailing commits his/her delegates to edwards, in return for the VP role with a cabinet job as well.
unlikely? sure ... ;)
the o
That would be great, and I couldn't agree more about these lying thieves that have us in this mess. Before the mudslinging started, I did hear Obama say that he would like to have "Clinton, not Hillary", or Gore as a VP. Don't think Gore would take the back seat again, but it would be great to see him in the White House.
I really like Edwards and would like to see him too.
How about Kucinich for FCC chairman after the screwing NBC gave him.
John Edwards cost John Kerry presidency in '04. He could do the same for Obama. I hope Obama is smart enough to learn from mistakes of others and won't let Edwards ruin another Democratic bid for the white house.
Why not Edwards for VP and Kucinich for AG? And don't forget to put Hillary in there somewhere. As someone else said, get the best and brightest into power. It's always amazing to me when presidential candidates DON'T choose their rivals for these posts.
Is Novak the one who "outted" Valarie Plame?
I as yet have no idea who will be the Democratic Party's nominee; however, I would gladly have Barack Obama or John Edwards on the Supreme Court. It is probably asking too much to see both of them appointed to the Court. In fact, if Clinton were the nominee, and if she were to appoint both or one of them to the Court, the negative nabobs among the Democrats would see this as an attempt to remove her competition from the field for 2012.
The notion of John Edwards as US Attorney General is to be expected, given his unequivocal views about predatory capitalism. I have heard several people muse that he might be the person to put the Justice Department back in the business of representing and protecting the people of the USA. But Robert Novak repeating what has been on many minds for some time means nothing. Novak proved himself a moral coward in the Valerie Plame case. In my view he has nothing but self-promoting bluster to add to the discussion.
There is a basic assumption in this idea that is flawed whether it comes from Novak or someone else. The assumption is that Obama is keen to rock the boat when such is not the case. He and Hillary both get their money from Wall Street and both will dance to the Street's tune once in office. Does Wall Street want a stronger labor movement? No. Do they want those who violated our Constitution punished? No. Do they want their control of the levers of government challenged in any way? No.
Some people are getting the wool pulled over their eyes by the corporate-owned media in this election.
Your last sentence has it right. This is part of the election long effort to force Edwards out of the race for president. The corporate media and friends have done all they can to pretend he is the invisable man since the beginning. In Huffington Post today(Monday) Leslie Savan does the best-and only-job I have seen, of laying out the whole story. I could wonder why the corporate and political establishment world is so anxious to be ride of John, except I know why. They are terrified of him doing what he says he will do--and he would do it.
Thank you Edith. Great article from Leslie Savan - particularly the closing paragraph:
If I didn't know better, I'd say that by cutting off the race's possibly strongest Democrat--first from media coverage and now from polls--the corporate media could be misleading us toward another Republican administration.
How about Eliot Spitzer for Attorney General. He already has struck fear into Wall Street. There are a lot of slimeball Corporations out there.
Edwards, a voice for the poor? Does he want all the poor to live in houses as big as the astrodome and get $400 haircuts? Attorney General? That will have uncomfortable intimations for many me thinks...
Gary, what planet are you on? Kerry cost Kerry his presidency. He was considered cold, stiff and unlikable and he was swift-boated by the thugs of the GOP. Edwards has warmth, passion and intelegence. I am a big fan and agree whole heartedly with Jonathan - no matter the outcome specifics, more Edwards, please.
I was in the Senate gallery when Edwards spoke out against the Ashcroft AG nomination from the floor. At that time, he was my underwhelming senator, but I immediately supported him for AG. This time, I'm all behind him for president, but I believe that the cabinet has as much an effect on our day-to-day lives as the man in the Oval Office, and JE, who has been fighting for people (not corps) in court for a long time, and is damn good at it, would be a great AG for me.
Elliot Spitzer will strike fear in everyone. Is that the kind of top cop we want? How about Kucinich for Drug Czar? We need a mellow czar and a mellow AG and we need to drop all the "war" on everything mindset.
great to speculate wit one little problem, Edwards endorsers are not all that enthused about Oblapie the empty suit, and he's been told as much, so he may want to but
i doubt bit, besides he's marginalizing edwards and that is so typical of a n------,aint gonna sit well with the wife
The idea that the Obama campaign may be floating this rumor to marinalize Edwards is exactly what I thought when I first heard this rumor. They are hoping to get the Edwards supporters to give up and go to Obama, thus cinching his bid for the nomination.
I for one will not fall for this. I am behing Edwards for President all the way!
Edwards for President. Vice-President in a pinch. Not for Attorney General.
The AG MUST know federal criminal law. Edwards has been a civil litigator -- a great one, by all accounts, with his heart in the right place.
Litigation is an exceedingly hard way to make a living.
But the criminal law is a different ballgame. Federal criminal law -- the major responsibility of the U.S. Department of Justice -- is furthermore a different ballgame from state criminal law. Janet Reno, coming from Florida to D.C., found this out the hard way, after Waco.
I'm a former federal prosecutor who is backing Edwards for President. As Attorney General, we need a criminal lawyer.
Bill Clinton as Ambassador to the United Nations
Hilliary Clinton as Sec Health
Oblapie as Sec Of Housing
Biden head of homeland Security
Kunich sec of the interior
Waxman as your head of the doj
Fiengold Ethics Commissionr
EDWARDS AS PRES
AL GORE Ambassador at large for global change
Bill Richardson Supreme court nominee
Not for this Edwards supporter. This thing is not going to be over with the Super Tuesday vote. I am actually looking forward to a brokered convention.
Edwards is the one who has been first and the leader on every major issues only to have the others to try to steal his thunder by claiming the same policies.
The fact that he has moved the discussion more to the left has been good but for the supporters of the other candidates, the question is if they had to be prodded to take up the poverty issue as well as other big ones how much do they really mean it?
I would say Eliot Spitzer for Attorney General regardless who gets the nomination and the oath of office in Jan 2009.
It's becoming more and more obvious to me that the special interests--billionaire banklords, etc--usually get their way. The fact that Zbigniew Brzezinski supports Obama scares the hell out of me. Z.B. may be smart, but is heartless--kinda like Cheney. American people need to start demanding that the nominees back up their promises by signing affadavits swearing they will do everything in their power to do the things they have promised, if elected. Otherwise, all we're ever going to get is a bunch of lies. I can't say I completely trust any of the nominees. I trusted Kucinich, and knew he was real from the way he was black-listed. And I'm starting to believe in Edwards, too, because of the same reasons--powers that be don't want him in the W.H... which means he's probably being honest about his dislike of corporate power. Also, I forget who said it, but they were right about the Drug Czar--we need someone who can maybe finally bring some common sense and harm-reduction to our drug policies, which are draconian, and not working. Of course, many people say this is intentional, because one of the main jobs of the C.I.A. is to launder as much drug money through the American banking system as possible, to support WallStreet..so they smuggle tons of coke and heroin into our country, and marijuana is the "scape goat"--the people who get busted (since there's not near the money in pot that there is in coke and heroin)to show that the government is being "tough on drug use." Really, it's the only explanation that makes sense...these people are NOT that stupid--they know, from our experience with alcohol prohibition, that it doesn't work, but instead creates black markets and causes all kinds of corruption. They also know that marijuana is not only harmless, but actually a healing herb that has now been shown to have positive effects on a number of types of cancer. Not one single person has ever died from smoking pot--but thousands die each year from legalized alcohol and cigarettes. They also know the whole "gateway drug" is bull. If there were a gateway drug, it would be the inhibition-reducing drug alcohol. It's mainly the fact that people who want to smoke pot as an alternative to the poisonous alcohol have to go to a drug dealer to get their smoke--and that's where they are tempted, by the dealer, to try other drugs. Many younger people think, "well, everyone lied to me about the dangers of pot, they probably lied about the dangers of heroin, too"...but they're wrong, because heroin truly IS a dangerous drug. Nevertheless, addiction to alcohol, or any other drug, when it is un-accompanied by violence, should be dealt with as the mental, spiritual, and physical HEALTH problem it is, not a CRIMINAL problem.
How about this line up:
Obama/Richardson ticket, John Edwards AG, Bill Clinton Sec.State, Al Gore EPA,
Clark Homeland Security
John Stewart, press secretary!!!!
Who cares what Edwards will or will not do.
As to the exposed national traitor Novack-----when will he be tried for treason?
Better yet, when will this nation of lickers wake it's lazy ass up?
It doesn't much matter now, does it? Edwards was finally pushed out. This has been an interesting lesson, one which I will definitely expose my class to, once I finish up my Masters in Teaching. We were denied a great candidate due to two factors: (1) media/corporate power; (2) America's lackluster interest in who runs our country. How many of us, even on this post, took the time to read Edwards' 80 page contract? How many of us dug around to see who's bankrolling our two leading Democratic candidates? Who checked out their voting records? (Even Edwards hurts a little in this category.) And most importantly, how much did each of us contribute to Edwards' campaign? I gave, but I could've given more, and my wife and I have children and are both in school. This isn't a guilt trip. It's a wake-up call. We have to fight a lot harder if we're to rebuild the democracy we've lost. The GOP will continue to steal elections and the DNC will continue to prop up centrist politicians, leaving us well to the right of center. We face the greatest challenges ever faced by a democracy. We aren't at war (no, Iraq really is just an occupation), and so the dangers aren't obvious. But climate change, desertification, loss of potable water, possible pandemic, from flu or T.B., world-wide depression, these are all likely challenges facing us in the near future. These are some of the ones we can predict. And a combination of two or more will see the rise of dictators like Stalin, Hitler and Pol Pot, posing even greater risks. We should have been tackling these issues, and others, like nuclear proliferation, years ago. And we have precious little time now to come to grips with the mess we've made. Which is to say: don't for a moment think that this isn't incredibly important. It is. It's time we stopped watching our so-called "reality" t.v., and began focusing on the unseen reality that faces us.
I have said it many times before and I will say it again, JOHN EDWARDS WOULD MAKE THE VERY BEST PRESIDENT Hillary and Obama have stolrn msany ideas from John Edwards. But now that that is 'water under the bridge, EDWARDS WOULD MAKE A PERFECT ATTORNEY GENERAL.
Edwards cost Kerry the election in '04?? Are you out of your mind..? Kerry and the democrats who put him on the top of the ticket screwed Kerry. As a friend of mine said, "You could've put Dale Earnhardt on the ticket with John Kerry and he still would have lost the south!!" Kerry was a worthless candidate!
