New Hope for the DREAM Act

The bipartisan DREAM Act is a favorite bill of mine, and its been painful to watch it get killed over and over. Now there's new hope. Brave New Films is launching an ad campaign called "A Dream Deferred" that aims to force the new president to make the DREAM Act a priority in 2009. If you visit the "A Dream Deferred" website, you'll find a petition in support that you can send to Senators Obama, Clinton, and McCain. Here's Brave New Films' first ad:

I am an illegal immigrant and I understand why so many American Citizens are upset over this issue. I also want you to put yourself in my shoes for a minute? I came to the United States when I was a year old. I graduated from high school with honor, at the same time I did about 400 hours of community work in my neighborhood. My dream was to attend UCLA yet that dream came to an end when I realized I did not qualify for financial aid because of my legal status. I am currently attending a California State University and I pay tuition working full time. I am majoring in Social Work because I want to be able to help those in my community who are most in need. I have never been in trouble with the law in any way. I pay taxes! My parents have never asked the government for any help. WHY AM I TREATED LIKE A CRIMINAL? I have no future in the country were I was born. I consider myself an American. I LOVE THIS COUNTRY!!! I believe people should become educated about the illegal immigrants living in America. Not everyone is bad. I urge everyone to think about my case because there are many others in my situation.

Is there a reason why there cannot be a DREAM Act for all Americans and not just children of illegals (citizens, nonetheless), but children of people screwed out of their retirement, savings, investments and now homes by corporate criminals like CEO of Enron, Bear Stearns, etc, etc....

no profile pic for comment author

Hey MEJ,

I could not agree with you more..!!! It is very insulting that i have to PAY for my child to attend college, $18,000 yr, when a criminal illegal alien is trying to STEAL my tax $'s to send there child to OUR colleges..!!!
We need to stand up to this and MAKE our elected people remember who votes for them. We citizens vote, NOT the illegals, even thought the DEM's woudl LVOE to see 15 million illeglas vote...
I live in California and i don't think the rest of the country sees the invasion like we Californias do..!!!

STOP WHINING BILL

No one's trying to take your stupid money. Even if the DREAM Act passes, those who qualify for it WON'T be given federal financial aid (even though they PAY TAXES) and they WON'T be allowed to vote.

Funny how the government is more than willing to take their money when it comes to tax time, yet denies simple human rights like healthcare and education.

YOU are the one "stealing" the illegal immigrant's tax dollars!!!!

Ok People,

I will give this much, If the illeglas are WILLING to serve at least 6 yrs in the Marines, then they can have papers..!! I don't think that anyone would go against this.
But other than that, Arrest the whole familiy, and ship them back where they can make THERE country a better place, not pull down OUR country..!!

Hey, Bill,
I'm tempted to harp on your for using capital letters while MISUSING the there/their distinction that all English speaking people should know about. Are you secretly an illegal alien . . . ?

Just kidding. I think your 6 years in the corps is an interesting idea, but it's also problematic in that it feeds the military industrial complex fresh meat, and would also make it easier for our leaders to fight unpopular wars by preventing US citizens from "voting with their feet" to get out of Iraq by not showing up for recruitment.

However, I think the basic premise you are onto is brilliant, and I'm not saying that sarcastically. What if we made citizenship contingent on serving the United States in some substantive manner? This could take the form of a 2 or 3-year stint in Americorps or enrolling in TeachForAmerica or some like organization (most illegal immigrants would presumably be native Spanish speakers capable of serving in the public school system). Several years of service in a capacity like that is more than most Americans will serve in their lifetimes.

Do you think that a service stint like that would be enough to atone for the heinous crime of having been born somewhere else?

Hey MJ,

Sorry, but just doing 2 yrs in the Liberal incubator of education won't cut it... It would have to be the Marines or Army, that is what most of the people i have talked to think. Being a soldier for 6 yrs would instil such patriotism in the kids that they would be True americans, not the kind you get from hanging around Academia for 2 yrs.
And i know i am not the best when it comes to gramer, but i was a Physics major, not english.. hahaha

Bill

no profile pic for comment author

Physics major? and can't

Physics major? and can't spell grammar? are you sure? did you serve in the army in your country? did you serve in the army here? are you really a patriot because you hate illegals?

no profile pic for comment author

I think you might be misunderstanding the point, as Americorps has nothing to do with academia. Americorps is like the Peace Corps (i.e. building infrastructure like houses and roads) and similar community service activities. Teach for America is a program in which people teach in underserved public schools (typically in rural or urban areas) and receive a teaching degree after, I believe, three years. I don't think it's the kind of "academia" you are referring to (which I presume means feminists, communists, pinkos et al rewrite history, oppress angry white men, etc..)

Secondly, I would tend to dispute the idea that military service a prerequisite for being a "True american" (sic). Most natural-born American citizens haven't served in the military and have "earned" citizenship through nothing more than having been born here.

Thirdly, speaking of "gramer," I noticed you capitalized "Liberal," "Physics" and "Academia" but not "americans (sic)." Show some respect!

I know in Germany the system they used to have was that everyone had to spend a year in the military or a year doing public service after they finished school. I don't think that would be a bad way for the U.S. to go.

no profile pic for comment author

I agree, JP, and am advocating a very similar system.

I don't see any reason that public colleges and universities should drive people into debt in order to get a BA in the wealthiest country in the world! Higher education should be free, but I could also see making education contingent on some kind of national service, as in Germany or other European countries. I have heard that some countries in Asia use a similar system, as well.

Jonathan Stein completely "forgot" to note that the DA lets illegal aliens take college discounts and slots from U.S. citizens.

It's a direct attack on U.S. citizenship, and no one who cares about the fundamental structure of our political system should support it.

This is a great way to cherry pick the best immigrants for our country. We can leave out the people who never graduated high school or have run ins with the police. We'll just take the ones that are valuable members of society, who speak English, understand it's culture and have good moral character.

Hey Maria,

You need to be angry andv upset with your
PARENTS..!!!

They are the ones who criminalized your whole family by NOT following the llegal path. Your parents are the ones who took you from your mother country and illegaly crossed our boarder and hid in the shadows for so many years.
I am sorry for your situation, but you should go back where you ARE a citizen and apply like the REST of the world..OK..?
Why should you have any advantage, just because your parents were good at hiding and not being deported..?

The round up has begun..:-)

ICE even ahs a phone number where American Citizens can call and turn in illegals..:-)
Watch yoru back... or better yet, Go back to yoru country of birth and do it the llegal way...huh?

please learn english!!

O.K I had it with you people! you steam out hatred all over the place against illegals, yet they write better english than you do. If you would worry a little more about getting educated instead of insulting people for the sin of being born somewhere else, I am pretty sure things would be much better for the nation. border not boarder, and we invaded Mexico first just to let you know.

Hey BILL,

You cannot tell us, the undocumented youth, to BLAME our parents...because they did this for us, and we will be forever thankful.
Before you say anything about immigration, you should know that coming to the U.S. to stay legally is pretty much impossible. It takes FOREVER. Our parents were desperate...but guess what, my family and i came by plane, we came as LEGAL immigrants. Unfortunately, our visas expired and we had no future in our home country, so we stayed.

My parents are college educated, we pay taxes and speak English. i pay for college with my own money, how am i stealing from U.S. citizens?
DREAM does not give us instate tuition- we still have to pay out of state. How are we stealing your tax money? I pay taxes too.

My family and I, as many other undocumented families are well rounded, educated individuals who DO speak english and assimilate to the American society. What's so wrong about giving us a chance?

this dream act is for kids that came here because their parents made them. they had no say in the matter, tell me if you ever did not follow what your parents told you when you were 10 or 15 years old for that matter. this kids came here because they didn't have a choice. some of them have lived here for 10 years and are probably smarter and have bigger dreams than most of us. this kids deserve a chance to become legal here and have the opportunity of their own. As for the parents, they should be deported because they knew what they were doing. but the kids are probably so used to living here that sending them back to their country will be not do anything more than ruin their lives and create hate for america in their countries.

no profile pic for comment author

Hey Bill
I just read your thought on how illegal immigrants should only be given papers if they serve six years and I think you should know that these are kids who were brought over here without a choice. They can not join the military without being a legal citizen. Some people in the military say otherwise so they can get paid for recruiting more people but eventually they get deported back. And its real easy for you to say ship them back to where they came from cause you probably live in a nice house and have all the things you really NEED. But I know a family who was told to go back to their country and they packed up their family and left. But now they can barely afford to have food for them and their children, the husband sometimes does not even get paid but continues to work in hopes that he will next week, and water is delivered once a month to people in the town but only lasts a week. So its real easy for a person like you who probably has not worked a week in his life as hard as that husband works everyday to support his family.

i have read almost all the comments on this page and i have to say that it just makes me sad that some people are so ignorant and immature about this situation. i do see how citizens can be angry about immigrants being here, after all this is not our home country. people need to understand that this means absolutely everything to illegal students, we honestly have no other way, and its sad that people can still be this racist. you CITIZENS do understand that this country was made out of immigrants and the ONLY actual citizens are the Native Americans right? so why do you guys think that you own the place? i have to say that we the student who were brought here as children had no choice and just like other kids our age, we have worked hard in some cases even harder just to be in school and have jobs. we are dying for things that you guys take for granted, like JOBS.. i mean seriously how many of you out there just keep making excuses for not having jobs, all you do is bitch and moan about how we are taking your jobs and your tax money, but what you don't realize is that we pay taxes just like you do and even after not having ss#'s we still manage to have jobs and pay for the bills. and in my case have so many better things than some of you out there have, and i'm not saying that to brag, its just so you know that after so many obstacles we still manage to be very well off in a country were we have no identity.

First of all, let me tell

First of all, let me tell you some facts: Since I work for the newspaper here in the College I attend I had to research some things about immgrants and education in california, since they wanted to to revoke the AB540. 1.) I found that if we (yes we) Immigrants (I am an immigrant too) attend college the United States loses money, and the most important/interesting thing is that THE US LOSES WAY MORE MONEY IF WE *THE IMMAGRANTS* don't attend. I am Mexican I love my country with all my heart, but my parents, who brought me here, to this great country, realized that we had not future in Mexico. Of course we're not steeling anything from you guys, we pay taxes!!! My parents work in the fields, would you consider that steeling a job??? of course not, Im' pretty sure, many Americans wouldn't want to work in places like that. I believe they'd do anything else but that, is that why I see many Americans asking and begging for money in the streets??? I'm sorry but see we Mexicans don't do that, we don't come here to kill, steel, or anything else, we come to excel, and that is why we work in the fields and consider that an honest job. I am proud of my parents for bringing me here, and for the job they have, because IT IS FROM WORKING IN THE FIELDS THAT I AM ABLE TO ATTEND COLLEGE AND LIVE. I'M SORRY IF I OFFENDED ANYBODY. I LOVE THE UNITED STATES JUST AS MUCH AS I LOVE MY COUNTRY, MEXICO.

Bill and everyone else, As

Bill and everyone else,

As I read the comments on this page, I can't help but to feel pity.

First of all, I doubt, Bill, that you are educated. I'm about to graduate from UT and i can tell you that if you went to college, you didn't learn a thing because you are incredibly ignorant.

Steal your taxes? Take your schools? As many have stated, illegal immigrants DO pay taxes. You also stated that we take your jobs, well, yea we (immigrants) do. We take your jobs because we work hard. Instead of begging on the streets, we work. But now we are not only working in the fields, we are working in offices, not taking a "white man" job, but taking an available job that we are better qualified for. If you don't want immigrants taking your job, then work hard!

You think you have more patriotism than immigrants? Growing up in a country that you know will give you opportunities that you might never have had creates a real appreciation and love for that country.

Why are you so patriotic? You call yourself an American yet you embody ignorance, intolerance, and hatred. Do you consider yourself a good American? Is that what America stands for for you?

People need to realize that when immigrants start having more rights, the situation will improve for ALL of America. If immigrants are able to work legitimately, then they will have to be paid at least minimum for that job. If they are getting paid fairer, their will be less competition for jobs based on anything other than merit. This means that in the end, everyone gets paid more. Sometimes a white person will not get paid what they deserve, and sometimes even get replaced by someone who is willing to work for less. These people are immigrants that sometimes don't have papers so they take a job regardless of pay, but if they have rights, then they will have the right for minimum pay. This will leave the company no alternative but to raise wages. Raised wages means improved living conditions for all the working class which means increased opportunities. With increased possibilities you have less people that need government help, which means that money can be used for other things like health care or higher education.

The country needs any kind of reform that would allow it's inhabitants to succeed. When the people succeed, the country succeeds.

Long live America :)

For Bill and everyone else

The reality is that the DREAM act will cost taxpayers fifty million dollars annually.

HOWERVER after doing some research

If the DREAM act passes in the long run the undocumented student, after obtaining his/her degree will repay that tax money in a few decades.

Not only would the DREAM act increase tax revenues but also reduce government expenses. In a study conducted by RAND in 1999 it was estimated tat "an average thirty year old Mexican immigrant woman [college educated] will pay $ 5,300 more in taxes and cost $ 3,900 less in criminal justice and welfare expenses" than if she were a high school dropout. "The increase fiscal contribution would repay the requred educational inestment [50 million dollars] within a few years...provide a profit to taxpayers for several decades" (nilc.org).

As a result those fifty million dollars taxpayers will invest will not only be repaid but even moe money will be coming into the economy.

Next time Bill do some research before you start judging and prevent yourself from coming out as ignorant.
