Bush "Came Into Office on Third Base and Stole Second"

Second line of the night:

You know, it was once said of the first George Bush that he was born on third base and thought he'd hit a triple. Well, with the 22 million new jobs and the budget surplus Bill Clinton left behind, George W. Bush came into office on third base, and then he stole second.

—Ohio Governor Ted Strickland in a speech tonight at the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado.

I laughed out loud long and hard at this line. I was entertained far, far too much while in traffic on a busy stretch of I-35 in Austin Texas with my top down and the radio on NPR so I could listen to DNC speeches on my way home. What a wonderful moment it was to have those brilliant words issue forth from my car speakers. Thank you Ted Strickland!

I believe it was the late Ann Richards, former governor of Texas, who zinged George W. Bush with that "third base" line. It was nice to hear a variation on Ann's great zinger.
