Russia Attacks Georgia, Bush Attacks the Olympic Mountain Bike Course

Both Jon McCain and Barack Obama commented yesterday on Russia's invasion of Georgia, an event in some ways overshadowed by John Edwards' shenanigans, and the opening of the Olympic games. McCain is taking an aggressive stance saying Russia should "unconditionally cease its military operations and withdraw all forces." Obama offered that "now is the time for Georgia and Russia to show restraint, and to avoid an escalation to full-scale war."

Menwhile, George Bush had a busy Saturday in Beijing, biking the Olympic mountain bike course, volleying with beach volleyball players, and posing with the US softball team. Of the course, Bush called it "really, really difficult." In general, Bush seemed to be in his element, that is, among people who see it as their jobs to work out all day. He did take time out at one point to tell reporters that he's "deeply concerned" about "a dangerous escalation in the crisis" in Georgia.

A senior US official has called Russia's attack on Georgia "far disproportionate" to Georgia's alleged attack on Russian peacekeepers. Russia, meanwhile, is likely motivated by Georgia's bid to join NATO, which would bring the alliance to a 475-mile shared border with Russia. Already five of Russia's 14 neighbors are NATO member countries.

Gee, Elizabeth, I found this in today's CBS/AP report on the situation:
President Bush called for an end to the Russian bombings and an immediate halt to the violence.

"The attacks are occurring in regions of Georgia far from the zone of conflict in South Ossetia. They mark a dangerous escalation in the crisis," Bush said in a statement to reporters while attending the Olympic Games in Beijing.

Reuters adds:
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev told Bush by phone the only solution was for Georgian troops to quit the conflict zone.

Hmmmm..., Bush & Medvedev spoke on the phone about the situation...

Your report, or more precisely your HEADLINE gives the impression that Bush doesn't know or care about what's going on in Russia/Georgia/Ossetia.

I think we should stick to blaming Bush for the instances where he's already stuck US troops into foreign countries where we had no business. NOT complain about some perceived failure to stick his nose into some foreign hot-spot were we clearly shouldn't want him to get our people involved.

Or do you WANT our people to become targets in yet another foreign entanglement??
Are you Encouraging him to do just that?

It's yet another foreign dispute We Can't Solve.
Our best approach is the one John Quincy Adams outlined in his famous "Monsters to destroy.." address.
Speak our piece and go back to our own business.

Russia is right to protect its nationals. It's nationals are freedom fighters, in a war of liberation and national determination, from their colonial Georgia masters. Bush is wrong to condemn the freedom fighter supports. This is not another example of the Zionists influencing US policy. Obama is right, we need a hands off policy.

Seems that the US client government of Georgia bit off a bit more than it could handle.

Don't look for the vainglorious empire to defend its quisling in the region.

The president of Georgia was Harvard trained--and his cozying up to the empire, his willingness to make Georgia a stoodge for the US empire's designs to rule the world is not working out too well.

Ivey League education is not all that is cracked up to be--just look at GW Bush.

While the civilian victims of all this are tragic, it is pleasurable to see the organized terror apparatus of the US empire rendered impotent in this instance.

All together now: waaah, waaah, no fair! Putin's a bad, bad man. The Ruskies are commies that need to be destroyed!

James P, only the international Zionists are against the freedom fighters.

"That's why I'm an amateur and they're Olympians," Bush added.

Is he...? Did he...? Is this...?

Sigh.

Olympians ARE amateurs, der Fuhrer.

I guess Koby Bryant is an amateur? Where have you been for the last few decades jordy, in space?

This is creepily reminiscent of the 1950's - an American Left in thrall to Stalinist propaganda coupled with racist & anti-semitic isolationist ideologues made for a world in which millions perished - and millions more stood on the brink. What Russia and its KGB commandant leader Putin are doing is blatant, violent aggression - not only against Georgia and the nearby sovereign nations but also, yes, against the U.S. This is not another Iraq - this is real bombings & corpses & the rest of the world can't pretend it isn't a witness. We ignore it at our grave peril. The say, as Obama did initially, that the combatants are equal aggressors is either incredibly naive or patently false. And yes I'm a yellow dog Democrat.

Doesn't 3rdgeneration realize he/she must speak only in praise of the glories of the anti-Zionist, anti-capitalist-imperialist-US freedom fighters when blogging on Mother Jones?
