Palin's First Year as Mayor: Off With Their Heads!
The Seattle Times has unearthed three boxes of archived documents on Palin's first year as the mayor of Wasilla. The year is 1996, and Palin can't seem to decide whether she wants to be Karl Rove or the Queen of Hearts. Elections in this town of 5,000 are officially nonpartisan, but Palin and her supporters turn the race into a senseless proxy war for national issues: they tar her opponent as "pro-abortion" and question his marital status, trumpet her endorsement by the NRA, and roll out the slogan, "Conservative, More Efficient Government." Her backers include an only-in-Alaska coalition of the religious right and bar owners who want to make sure they can keep serving until 5 a.m.
After she's elected, she gets drunk on power and goes on a firing binge. We already knew she pink slipped the anti-book-banning librarian, but here we learn more: she fires the police chief, who'd recently been named Wasilla's employee of the year, and, in a sort of Lord of the Flies scenario, asks the three employees of the town museum to decide among themselves who will get the ax (all three decide to quit). The same year, she's stopped by the city attorney after she tries to stack the city council. The local paper, the Frontiersman, condemns her in blistering editorials and citizens talk of a recall.
Despite all of this, of course, she's reelected in 1999. She's a smoother politician by then. But given the way she later wields the axe as governor (see Troopergate), maybe the editors of the Frontiersman were onto something when they wrote that Palin's philosophy was "that either we are with her or against her." Sounds a lot like king what's-his-name

Yes, Susan we have had enough, and that's why McCain the reformer is going to get elected. Someone who has a record not someone who votes "present." What exactly does Obama believe anyway? You surely cannot tell by looking at a non-existent voting record now can you?

Fact check before you publish - Palin tried to lay off librarian Mary Ann Emmons, but, didn't get away with it. Ms. Emmons went on the chair the Alaska Library Association.

I'm appalled at the lack of prep by Obama's supporters. You are supposed to know your material. Don't expect hard-working folks to do your research for you. This is what they expect an 'elitist' to do. These Rethuglicans didn't win elections by telling potential voters to look up the answers online themselves!

McBush and McPain both mean 4 more years of the same. We must not choose them. Hopefully WE THE PEOPLE will choose a democratic Congress to go along with a democratic President. A democratic Congress will not have their hands tied with the CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICANS, McBush and McPain. After everything the REPUBLICANS have gotten away with the past 8 years, if WE THE PEOPLE tie the hands of a democratic Congress, with an executive branch that has attained full autocratic power, WE THE PEOPLE can not expect Congress to be able to do much if anything on our behalf. A democratic Congress needs a democratic executive branch to be able to mend for the common population what has been destroyed by the autocratic RIGHT EXTREME.

SeattleLiberal, the plane was put on eBay twice, but failed to get a good enough bid. Eventually it was sold off-line (not via eBay) to a private business for a $500,000 loss.

How true. Been trying to get a fix on what McCain really stands for, but it seems that he just doesn't have time to attend to the job he was elected to do. His voting record for the past year is mostly "not present".

This is typical female behavior. A Women's place is in the home, taking care of her man and kids, and mother in law.
i think one of the more significant aspects of ms. palin's tenure as mayor of wasilla, in addition to the enormous debt she left the town with, is the fact that an administrator was hired because ms. palin could not handle the day-to-day (executive) work.
