Sarah Palin's Secret Emails

sarah-palin-secret-emails-250x200.jpg

The Palin administration won't release hundreds of emails from her office, claiming they cover confidential policy matters. Then why do the subject lines refer to a political foe, a journalist, and non-policy topics?

In June, Andrée McLeod, a self-described independent government watchdog in Alaska, sent an open records act request to the office of Governor Sarah Palin. She requested copies of all the emails that had been sent and received by Ivy Frye and Frank Bailey, two top aides to Palin, from February through April of this year. McLeod, a 53-year-old registered Republican who has held various jobs in state government, suspected that Frye and Bailey had engaged in political activity during official business hours in that period by participating in a Palin-backed effort to oust the state chairman of the Alaska Republican party, Randy Ruedrich. (Bailey has been in the national news of late for refusing to cooperate with investigators probing whether Palin fired Alaska's public safety commission because he did not dismiss a state trooper who had gone through an ugly divorce with Palin's sister.)

In response to her request, McLeod received four large boxes of emails. This batch of documents did not contain any proof that Frye and Bailey had worked on government time to boot out Ruedrich. But there was other information she found troubling. Several of the emails suggested to her that Palin's office had used its influence to reward a Fairbanks surveyor who was a Palin fundraiser with a state job. In early August, McLeod filed a complaint with the state attorney general against Palin, Bailey, and other Palin aides, claiming they had violated ethics and hiring laws. Palin, now the Republican vice-presidential candidate, told the Alaska Daily News that "there were no favors done for anybody."

But more intriguing than any email correspondence contained in the four boxes was what was not released: about 1100 emails. Palin's office provided McLeod with a 78-page list (PDF) cataloging the emails it was withholding. Many of them had been written by Palin or sent to her. Palin's office claimed most of the undisclosed emails were exempt from release because they were covered by the "executive" or "deliberative process" privileges that protect communications between Palin and her aides about policy matters. But the subject lines of some of the withheld emails suggest they were not related to policy matters. Several refer to one of Palin's political foes, others to a well-known Alaskan journalist. Moreover, some of the withhold emails were CC'ed to Todd Palin, the governor's husband. Todd Palin—a.k.a. the First Dude—holds no official state position (though he has been a close and influential adviser for Governor Palin). The fact that Palin and her aides shared these emails with a citizen outside the government undercuts the claim that they must be protected under executive privilege. McLeod asks, "What is Sarah Palin hiding?"

The list of still-secret emails includes a series of messages that circulated on February 1, 2008, among Palin, Bailey, Frye, and Todd Palin "re Andrew Halcro." A former Republican, Halcro ran as an independent against Palin for governor in 2006, collecting only 9 percent of the vote. Since then he has been a blogger who often criticizes Palin. There is no telling what the emails said about Halcro. But in a July blog posting, Halcro asked, "why in the world is Todd Palin getting copied on emails [about me] that his wife's administration is classifying as confidential....These emails should be released to the public....after all Todd Palin has no standing to claim executive privilege. By including him in the email loop, the Palin administration has arguably breached any claim of executive privilege." And McLeod wonders, "What do emails about Andrew Halcro have to do with policy deliberations?"

The list of confidential emails includes a number of communications related to the Public Safety Employees Association, a union for the state's police officers and state troopers, and the headings refer to PSEA ads and a "PR campaign." Many of these PSEA-related emails were CC'ed to Todd Palin—and were also withheld under the deliberative process and executive privileges. (Recently, John Cyr, the PSEA executive director, told The Washington Post that Sarah Palin held a grudge against the state troopers and held down their salaries and other funding because her ex-brother-in-law-the-trooper had not been fired.) A separate email sent from Frye to Bailey and Todd Palin and headed "I may be in trouble here guys" was withheld because it involves a personnel matter. In April, a series of emails with the subject line "from Sheila Toomey" zipped between Sarah Palin, Bailey, Frye, other Palin aides, and Todd Palin. Toomey writes the "Alaska Ear" political gossip column for the Anchorage Daily News. These emails were also withheld under the deliberative process and executive privileges. And a string of emails titled "Racism on the Radio" that went back and forth between Governor Palin and her aides was blocked from release on the same grounds.

McLeod says she intends to file an appeal of the decision to withhold the emails on the 78-page list.

Palin has denounced McLeod's efforts. After McLeod filed the ethics complaint, Palin told the Anchorage Daily News, "This is the same Andrée McLeod that follows us around at public events and camps herself out in our waiting area and hounds us for a job, asking us if there's a way she can...not have to go through the system to get a job with this administration." Palin also called McLeod "the falafel lady," because McLeod once sold falafel. On his website, Halcro has posted excerpts of emails Palin sent McLeod between 2002 and 2005, in which she praised McLeod. In one of these messages, Palin wrote, "You're all about accountability." In another, Palin said, "Thanks for working to instill the public trust." Palin also wrote her, "I'm proud to know you." And in one email, Palin hailed McLeod: "Holy Moly you are powerful regarding getting the word out to the press about questionable activity."

"I've known Sarah for years, " says McLeod, who moved to Alaska from New York in 1978. "When the finger is pointed at somebody else, she's all for accountability. When it's pointing at her, it's different. Sarah Palin was elected on the basis of providing open and honest government. She has failed miserably."

The McCain-Palin campaign did not respond to phone and email requests for a comment.

UPDATE: McLeod has filed an appeal in the case of Sarah Palin's secret emails. See here.

Is Palin and McCain Racists?

Exert from http://reconstitution.us/rcnew/?p=1812

"So Sambo beat the bitch!"

This is how Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin described Barack Obama's win over Hillary Clinton to political colleagues in a restaurant a few days after Obama locked up the Democratic Party presidential nomination.

I guest we can assume that Palin and McCain will not be representing all the people if they get the Oval Office. All Sambo-colored people and female Bitches may need to find another country.

Why McCain? He is responsible for vetting her and have approved all her viewpoints. He voted against Martin L. King Holiday. Finally, I believe he do not have or ever had one black friend. I did say friend ? not an associate. I also believe that Mrs Palin never had a black friend either, even in college. Know I see why the Republican National Convention looked so one-colored. Maybe John McCain's slogan is really "Country Club First", no Sambos allowed.

Today's editorial on Palin from the Anchorage Daily News on questions we should ask her!

www.adn.com/opinion/view/story/520272.html

Just a few of my favorites:

? In spring of 2004, the Daily News reported that you cited family considerations in deciding not to try for the U.S. Senate: "How could I be the team mom if I was a U.S. senator?" What was different this time as you decided to run for vice president?

? If you were a fully qualified vice-presidential candidate from the get-go, why did you wait more than 10 days to face reporters?

? McCain spokesman Rick Davis told Fox News the media didn't show you enough "deference." How much deference do you expect to get from Vladimir Putin or Hugo Chavez?

Is Trig at the Heart of Media's Reaction to Palin?
Mona Charen Tue Sep 9, 3:00 AM ET
There were basically two things known about Sarah Palin when her name was announced on Aug. 29 and the media sphere began to shudder and pulsate: She was a recently elected governor and the mother of five children including a handicapped infant. The scorn from the mainstream press and the left-leaning blog world was both intense and instantaneous. Andrew Sullivan of The Atlantic immediately began circulating rumors that Trig was not the governor's baby ? that she had engaged in a huge charade to cover up her teen daughter's illegitimate child. The New York Times reported on the front page that Palin had been a member of the Alaska Independence Party. Eleanor Clift of Newsweek described the reaction of most newsrooms to Palin's elevation as "literally laughter." US Weekly rushed out a cover story picturing Palin holding her baby son with the headline "Babies, Lies, & Scandal."
And that was just the throat-clearing phase. NBC's Brian Williams wondered whether she could discharge her responsibilities with all those kids. Sally Quinn of the Washington Post asked, "Will she put her country first, or will she put her family first?" Mort Kondracke called her a "wacko right-winger."
Now it hardly needs mentioning that Brian Williams and company would sew their own lips closed before ever uttering such heresy about a liberal woman candidate. Nor would it even occur to them to question any male candidate's fitness because of the number of children he had.
How do the media poobahs explain it? They say (and to her credit, Sally Quinn has apologized for her comments) that it was Palin's inexperience that prompted their contempt. But aren't these the same people who had just the week before been defending Barack Obama's thin resume?
Something about Sarah Palin set them off before their own politically correct impulses ("Must Avoid Sexism") could inhibit them. By the ferocity of the response, you might have thought Palin was a secret member of a polygamous cult or had forced her daughter to give birth after a rape. But no, she was just the mother of five, hunting, fishing, NRA member, and governor.
I wonder if it was that baby.
Sarah Palin is no ordinary pro-lifer. She is an attractive, intelligent, ambitious, successful woman who has actually lived her convictions. Told that the baby she was carrying would be handicapped with Down syndrome, she and her husband made the only decision their consciences would permit ? to welcome this child with the same love they would give to any other. That decision is comparatively rare in America. Fully 80 percent of parents who receive a diagnosis of Down syndrome in their unborn children elect to abort. But it's not unusual at all among committed pro-lifers. I have met many in the course of speaking to pro-life audiences. And for every couple that has chosen life for a handicapped child, there are thousands and perhaps millions more who have abjured prenatal testing because under no circumstances would they abort their children. I cannot count the times I've amazed pro-choice people with the news that there are even waiting lists of couples who stand ready to adopt Down syndrome babies.
The example of people living their principles by embarking on the undeniably difficult path of raising a handicapped child is a hard one to dismiss. In fact, it's hard not to admire. Don't most of us, deep down, really think that the most humane and honorable thing is to treat all life as sacred? Even if you are not religious or have no belief in God ? doesn't it appeal to an enlightened humanism to give support and love to the handicapped? In fact, most pro-choice people probably treat the handicapped with terrific compassion and care. They doubtless support civil rights legislation like the Americans with Disabilities Act, additional school spending, and generous Social Security benefits. They'd be the first to hold the door for someone in a wheelchair, and they'd be friendly toward anyone with obvious mental retardation.
But for themselves, they would abort. And there stands Sarah, Trig Palin in her arms, a beautiful ambassador for the path of humility, duty, honor, and grace. It's no wonder she was in their crosshairs from the get go.

Ted...
Thank you for noticing. After all, spell check is so simple yet members of certain political parties find it so hard to do, and clearly, even get annoyed when we use it. You must also get annoyed that we are, for the most part, pro-choice, do not shovel our personal religious beliefs down someone's throat, care about the environment, are concerned about people less fortunate than us, expect the rich to pay their fair share of taxes, care about our civil liberties and the Constitution, want fair and equal treatment for ALL, and despise hypocrisy. Did I leave anything out?
And Palin was so scripted in her interview with Charlie Gibson. On almost every question she tried desperately to remember her notes and then had to be asked the question again for lack of answering it the first time. Isn't she great?a gun-carrying, moose-killing, abstinence-only preaching, uterus-owning, religious-squawking, earmark-lying, bullshit-talking, McCain promoting, loser. It was entertaining to say the least?

It is amazing David, how Karl Rove has changed the conversation from Obama to the GOP. Now Obama is 5% BEHIND. The Democrats have managed again to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. It happens every time. Oh well, such is life.

Please keep up the good work. This kind of information HAS to get out there to the low-information voters! And that is going to be a real job considering most of them are brainwashed with sound-byte politics these days.

From what I've read, the requirements were changed from requiring a college degree to No college degree, this allowed Tom Lamal to meet the requirements. Wonder if he'srelated to Kate Lamai. appointed by Palin Sept, 07- to the Sate of Alaska office of Board and Commissions, Natural Gas Authority.

"Dick Cheney in a skirt"

LOL! That was my first thought, too, 8-topushead.

Apparently the GOP strategy is to commit so many crimes and atrocities that reports of them begin to seem "business as usual" to the general population. It's working, too. They have done so many crimes that the press is unable to make a distinction between petty crimes, serious crimes, and personal failures (such as Larry Craig). To me, this particular one is somewhat petty in comparison to her getting someone fired over disagreements in a family dispute.

Scandal fatigue. Where "losing" 3 years of White House emails is equal in magnitude to Elliot Spitzer's affairs in the public's mind. Equal in magnitude, except that Spitzer's is more fun because it's racy.

Dear Madam,
Everything has been said and heard about you. Now stop telling your story. Come to the point. Talk about issues and your plan to solve them. There is no hard and fast line between self-esteem and arrogance. Keep your self esteem in your heart and throw your arrogance in dust bin.
Control your enthusiasm and tongue. Media checks even the spellings of the words you utter.
Change your rimless glasses even my grandaughter objects about them. Don't criticise the opponents speak whatever you want to say.
Lastly, BEWARE OF VOTERS FRAUD IT WILL HAPPEN IN BULK IN THIS ELECTION.

It seems to me that whether Todd Palin is in the administration or not, communications to him should be covered under spousal privilege.

Are we really so partisan that we do not expect a man, or a woman, to confide in their spouse about issues that matter to them?

Just what we need another VP hiding behind overly broad or completely nonexisent claims of privilege. You sure must be proud of yourself John McCain, foisting this corruption-ridden liar upon us.

I wonder if the same calamity occurred here that happened to poor, hapless Hillary. Perhaps boxes and boxes of them disappeared or were shredded. Does the word "HUBRIS" mean anything to....anyone?

This is such an...amazing...start to the NATIONAL political career of this "most conservative VP candidate ever.."

I am amazed that the repugnicans would expose themselves like this..(no pun intended..Foley is gone after all..) and it makes me a little paranoid because it sort of begs the question "what is it that the Repugnicans 'KNOW'?."..and/or is the 'election' already rigged to the point that winning the daily news cycle even with...undeniably negative information..becomes more important than actually coming accross as..."leadership material and NOT BushCo."

I am also amazed at the shere..HYPOCRISY of this VP candidate....from the SURREAL hypocrisy of her "family values" position and her unabashed position that she would, if she could..FORCE every American to be a "christian"..and to subscribe to these...uhhh...frankly FAKE "values"...with a 17 year old pregnant daghter..who was OBVIOUALY 'getting it on' prior to becoming "in a family way"...and thus was NOT educated regarding ANY kind of actual...uhhh.."VALUES"...

and now..add to that..IMMEDIATELY...I mean a WEEK has not gone by YET in which the beginnings of a scandal of TRUST, INTEGRITY..."VALUES" has not poked it's head through the perma frost of the American Rigth Wing state of Un-Reason..as in you can NO longer "reason" with these people...it is US v. THEM...for the average Repugnican...if the Democrats or the "Liberals" as if there were any...came out with a new 'platform' that stated "the sky is blue"...these people would vote for, and RABIDLY support whomever stated that "the sky is NOT blue..and that is a LIBERAL BIAS to say that the sky is blue and our administration will make sure and hold them accountable for making the statement that the sky is blue.." ec..etc..etc...they are not for "policy" or "the economy"..they ar for whatever CONFLICT is available and exploited by the Neo-Cons...this is classic Karl Rove...

James said, "...then you must be a die-hard democrat who doesn't care about anything other than seeing the Democrats gain the presidency."

Where did you get a copy my resume', James?

the republicans have found their messiah.

Yes, this is great....and while we're at it, I would like to see all of Barack Obama and Joe Biden's emails as well. There shouldn't be any security problem, if there isn't with Palin's. They were all in office. Bring it on!

Well, if McLeod is a falafel lady then Palin is nothing more than a pageant girl. That would be on the same level no? But then again, if a guy says that it will be labeled as sexism.

forget palin and hillary....the record for shredding goes to oliver north and fawn hall who used up 2 shredding machines and had started shredding on a 3rd when they were covering up for Reagan....plus Fawn testified that she smuggled out hundreds of documents in her underwear.
A little history lesson.

Don't be so quick to jump to conclusions. Convention bounces are ephemeral. We are still on top, if barely.

You know..it really is annoying that...simply because McSame is having his own little...uhh.."30 DAY'S OF NIGHT" with this Ultra Conservative..aka Ultra-Hypocritical, Ultra-Corrupt, Ultra-Vicious She-beast..uhhh...Vampire...well..how..HOW..is that applicable to "All THE OTHER CANDIDATES"?!?

I see these Posts from all these...uhh..i dunno what they are..'.50 ers' perhaps...like the Chinese blog minders..??? anyway...I digress..how does PALINS Vampiristic abuse of power and the EVIDENCE....EVIDENCE...EVIDENCE....thereof..equate to..ALL the other candidates?

Soooo..uhhhh...if ONE person is ALREADY being implicated in corruption...EVERYONE IS? By that "logic" the ENTIRE CONGRESS..SENATE...and especially EVERY REPUGNICAN should be investigated....and again..ESPESCIALLY the repugnicans..HOW MANY corruption and graft and...scandals have they been through now? How many? from Little Boy'sGate...to th most recent..and..ALASKAN O-I-L corruption of a Repugnican ..well...so..uhhh...innocent folks as well are now..SUSPECT? well..you know..actually..that DOES sound rather like the Repugnican IDEALS at this point..every American is a "enemy combatant"..unless of course you actually ARE a terrorist..and then you get to live in Miami and be pardoned by Der Jebster..Obergruppenfurer of the most corrupt election process in the USA...

So...I am all over the place..but you get the picture..HOW is it that..ONE persons ALREADY embroiled life...is somehow indicative of somone else with...shall we say..OBVIOUSLY more ..SCUPLES...or..at the very..VERY MINIMUM...much smarter...and that..IS a requirement for the job...palin is just to damn stupid to actually get away with something like...the firing of some Cop..WOW!...way to go...what an idiot...baby maker...she and her vampire larvae..need to get back on their spooky tanker and go out on the deep ice...hybernate a little longer...America is still a LITTLE too....."onest' for this LEVEL of hypocrisy...for this LEVEL of Predatory government...or..you could ..like so many .."VOTE FOR THE BLOODSUCKING FREAKS: VOTE MCCAIN/PALIN"

The question is what the Democrats and the Far Left are afraid of. It's a obvious question from their determination to try to build mountains out of every molehill they can find in the resume of a woman who actually thinks for herself, rather than letting them do it for her.

Looks like somebody is nervous about this year's elections, now that the pit bull is here! Keep doing great investigative work! Maybe your next title can be "Babies, lies, and scandals"

I did say friend – not an associate. I also believe that Mrs Palin never had a black friend either, even in college. Know I see why the Republican National Convention looked so one-colored. Maybe John McCain's slogan is really "Country Club First", no Sambos allowed.

My goodness. Sarah Palin, holder of an elective political office, may have committed politics while holding office. How sinister. She may have discussed her job with her husband. Yikes! She declines to let a self-appointed pest fish through her email. What wickedness is she hiding? The fate of the Republic teeters on the brink. So this tripe is the "smart, fearless journalism" Mother Jones boasts of?

Bob Waters, if Palin thinks for herself, then why cc her husband on work e-mails? Do you cc your spouse on e-mails that you send to your bosses or your employees?

If she is so much about good American values and transparency, why does she stonewall an investigation that she once said she would happily comply with?

Look, I don't know if these e-mails contain anything incriminating. How could we? But I do know that she should stop presenting herself as just another hockey mom. She is a skilled politician out to protect herself. You can say Obama, Biden, and Clinton don't do this or don't do that all you want. But the fact of the matter is that she has presented herself as just an average down home mom. And that is simply not true. We all have the right to question that image.

Typical republic manuever. Keep lying and screaming when the truth needs to come out. Say the other side is scared when it is you who is hiding information. The question is, if Barack has been vetted and researched for the last 18 months and you're still not satisfied, then how are you brain dead morons so satisfied with a 48 hour vetting of Sarah Palin? Why are the republic voters not insulted by this? I rememeber how insulted I was in 1988 when that idiot Dukakis got up in that tank....he lost any hopes of gaining back Reagan democrats. But then again republic voters are never insulted by their bosses....they get their thinking points from them. I thank my lucky stars everyday my parents raised me to think for myself and vote my thoughts, not the thoughts of party heads!

She's got you morons real scared, doesn't she?

Your pucker factor going up yet?

Your asshole startin' to suck the seat of your chair?

Hang on to your tinfoil hats, boys and girls, it's gonna be a wild right straight into hell!

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

We're coming for you.
