George W. Bush: Helping Candidates Lose Election in Other Countries, Too

Canada's parliamentary elections are coming up shortly, and the majority Conservative party is having a tough time maintaining its lead over the opposition Liberals.

How is the Liberal party making its gains? In part, by tying the prime minister to George W. Bush. Look familiar?

Actually, the Conservatives were a minority goverment before the election was called, but it now appears unlikely they will get the majority they were hoping for.

You are wrong. The Canadian CoWith nearly all the returns in, Canada's election agency reported on its Web site that the Conservatives had won or was leading in races for 143 of Parliament's 308 seats, an improvement over the 127 seats the party had in the previous Parliament.

The Liberal Party, long Canada's top party, suffered a severe drubbing, dropping to 76 seats from 95 in the previous Parliament, according to the election agency. Bloc Quebecois won 50 seats, the New Democrats 37 and independent candidates 2.

Liberal Party leader Stephane Dion, in his concession to Harper, offered his "full cooperation in these difficult economic times."

The party winning the most seats generally forms the government.

Jon, fascism is the wave of the future. It is sweeping Europe too. First Italy, then London, now Austria. Next the fatherland, Germany. Far-right political parties scored unprecedented gains in Austria during snap parliamentary elections held Sunday, with the possibility looming large that one of them will once again be included in a coalition government.

The radical right Alliance for the Future of Austria, led by Joerg Haider, received 11 per cent of the vote, while the Freedom Party, headed by Heinz-Christian Strache, got 18 per cent, according to early results.

Both parties advocate an end to immigration and the expulsion of foreigners and asylum seekers who commit crimes. "Today, we are the winners," Strache declared. Tomorrow der welt. Jon, I hear the sound of marching boots coming.
