Palin in 2012? Maybe Not So Much

When we visited a Palin rally in Virginia in October, we were greeted with Palin-mania. In a statement that seemed to represent the feelings of many, one woman said, "I respect John McCain, but I loooove Sarah Palin."

That enthusiasm appears to be confined to pockets of the Republican base, because it sure as heck wasn't found among the electorate at large yesterday. From MSNBC:

NBC-WSJ GOP pollster Neil Newhouse did a post-election survey last night, and here's what he found: Just 12% of those surveyed believed Palin should be the GOP's new leader; instead 29% of voters said Romney, followed by 20% who say Huckabee. Among GOPers, it was Romney 33%, Huckabee 20% and Palin 18%.

It's scary to think that people believe her to be capable.

NOBODY believes her to be capable. However, conservative Christian types generally care more about faith than job qualifications. I went to a "Christian" high school (which just means we had once a week chapel and the parties had a lot more booze and drugs). However, the schools hiring policies were entirely faith based and as such we had a Spanish teacher who did not speak Spanish and a Chemistry teacher who regularly gave 16 year olds access to unbelievably dangerous chemicals and experiments (dry ice bombs stand out in my mind as one such). They even considered hiring me for an interim position while I was still in my 2nd year of college.

The fact that Sarah Palin represents "A brave Christian witness in the face of the spiritual warfare of Washington" means that she could do just about anything she wants and she will still have the blessing of the Christian Right.

Oh please, let Sarah run in 2012. Oh please, oh please, oh please...

I can't think of a better way to ensure an 8-year Obama administration.

Ever since the Couric interviews, I maintained Palin would be a footnote in history. She will be the butt-end of jokes about VPs for decades. She has a sub-zero chance of being the GOP nominee for president.

The only way I see her forcing her way onto the nationatl stage is appointing herself Senator after Ted Stevens is removed from office (after being voted in again by the numbskulls in Alaska).

Alaskans are a prime example of what happens to people's logic when starved of daylight for six months out of the year.

Americans have short memory and Palin has blind ambition with no shame. She will be there in 2012. But like Karl Rove said -in 2012 she will really have to know her stuff.

She won't run. The GOP realizes that instead of constantly playing to the base, it needs move to the center and simply expect the evangelical base to continue to back it for lack of better options. Sure the repubs will still be "far right" on certain issues like abortion, etc, but they are going to have a more centrist bend. It's actually too bad that Shays, a GOP rep who could have led this movement, was swept up by the blue tidal wave last night.

Look for this to be Romney's next incarnation.

"Look for this to be Romney's next incarnation."

Romney's mormon...the evangelical wing of the R-party won't back him. He's got a snowball's chance.

It will be interesting to see if an independent party emerges from the Republican failure. Until the Republicans rally around a defining principal, they will not coalesce enough to win. The Palin arm puts religious zealotry first which flies in the face of the small government principles of the Goldwater arm. Though they briefly coexisted for Reagan and Bush administrations, both those administrations failed both elements of their coalition. Both oversaw historical bloating of the government and its debts while neither produced significant gains for the religious zealots. The root of their problems is the inherent hypocrisy in trying to serve two mutual exclusive masters -- you can't have a small government while trying to tell individuals how to live, breed, and die. People do not stand for hypocrites long.

I suspect Romney would be their likely pick. The evangelicals didn't get them close to winning this time, but catering to them lost tons of moderate and centrist voters to the left. I think that that will be factored in to making a choice between a Palin or a Romney.

Palin will be an excellent choice for the Republicans.

She will "lead" them to a 50 state sweep for Obama in 2012.

I can't wait.
