George Bush's New Neighborhood Doesn't Care About Black People
President Bush's future neighborhood, the wealthy Dallas area called Preston Hollow, has some unfortunate secrets:
Until 2000, the neighborhood association's covenant said only white people were allowed to live there, though an exception was made for servants.
Enacted in 1956, part of the original document reads: "Said property shall be used and occupied by white persons except those shall not prevent occupancy by domestic servants of different race or nationality in the employ of a tenant."
I'll add this thought. The president bought his ranch in Crawford just before running for president and will move to a swanky suburban neighborhood just after leaving office. It's almost like his cowboy image was an affect cultivated for maximum political gain. Imagine that.
And here's the inspiration for this post's headline:

Well, that's black folks' fault for not living on Wall Street. Look what happens when a hurricane hits there.
Kanye West is without any doubt the dumbest, whiniest little punk on the planet. His explosive rants are all too well documented. He even called MTV racist for not giving him a video award. First off...MTV racist? Second, who cares about a video award???
Big surprise, right? George W. Bush is the big empty. There's no there there.
LOL, I lived in North Dallas for years and didn't know Preston Hollow was racist. Elitist, yes but pardon me while I laugh over this crap.
Besides, I have it on good authority that he's only housing the first lady there. (It was The Enquirer that broke the Edwards' mistress story right?)
The Wow moment for me while reading your post was the revelation that as recently as 2000 there have been racist laws in the U.S. Could that be? Wow.
As far as I'm aware he's not giving up the ranch in Crawford. Just not living there full-time. Also, how does the neighborhood's racially restrictive covenants (that were eliminated 9 years ago) have any reflection on the Bushes? Does that mean that anyone who moves in there from now to eternity is racist because the owners were in the 50's? I hate Bush as much as the next guy, but come on that is just ridiculous. I think your piece also belies how prevalent these racially motivated covenants were as well. Not to mention the fact that they have not been legally enforceable for almost 60 years (Shelly v. Kraemer (1948)).
You would be surprised at the number of restrictions still in place. The fact is, however, they are typically unknown and when discovered, they are removed immediately. Nice try at tying W to racism. He did more for minorities with his appointments than even the beloved Lewinski'd Clinton.
This article is bad journalism. MOST middle-class neighborhoods which were built before the 1970s have racially discriminatory covenants which may not have been formally edited out. Thos covenants are now illegal, whether they have been edited out or not.
The disingenuous race-baiting has got to stop. It is truly stupid to accuse people of "racism" because they live in a neighborhood or are part of a group which once discriminated, but no longer does so. Some of the people who are hung up on this issue are as flawed and prejudiced as they accuse others of being.
FWIW, from a Dallasite, Preston Hollow is a neighborhood, yes, but more like a term that a real estate agent would drop on a perspective buyer. Bush's new digs on are on other side of the tollroad, so isn't really even in PH. Besides, the covenant linked by Raw Story lists 16 tracts; these tracts would basically have to be 100 acres each to cover the general PH area, which in my estimation for you google mappers, would be bound by Preston Road, Hillcrest, Northwest Highway and Royal Lane.
As for the area, it used to be fairly middle-to-upper class with great location, but in the last 15 years has gone through razing and McMansion building. (The really really rich people live on the other side of the tollroad - Ross Perot is just south of Royal at Inwood - or in Highland Park.) FYI, Preston Hollow had a pretty good amount of Obama lawn signs a couple of weeks ago. Not as many as McCain, of course, but more than I would have expected.
Now, if you really want to jump George about Preston Hollow, you might point out that he lived on Northwood Road at Preston back when 41 was Prez but before 43 bought his fractional stake of the Rangers.
Oh, and if you like checking out pick-up games of soccer, the Hispanic landscapers usually get going about one o'clock at Preston Hollow Park.
First off, the typepad sign in doesn't work on MotherJones. You guys and gals should fix it.
Secondly, Preston Hollow is, ironically, home to a lot of wealthy plaintiffs' lawyers that contribute enormous amounts of money to democrats.
Highland Park would've made more sense.
Generally these covenants are so far under the weight of other code that people forget they are there. I doubt it's something that's put up to referendum every year.
Apparently, oral sex is illegal in DC, and I think one president actually broke that law while in office. Literally.
He should have moved to a more egalitarian locale like Chappaqua.
Wait a minute, just look at all the Africans bush helped with AID medications and mosquito netting!
dubya isn't prejudiced against blacks!
Just black AMERICANS...
This reflects much worse on the people of Texas as a whole than on W.
Dear Ben, I hear what you are saying when you wrote what appears below. However, this is what it sounds like...Excuse for Bush, Excuse for Bush, Excuse for Bush, Republican propaganda blah, blah, blah...

Everybody STOP IT! Cut this crap out, all of you. This piece is on par with what the GOP and Fox have been pulling.
Conservs, now you know how it feels to be bullied by fear, anger and alarmism.
Is nobody hearing what Obama's saying? Stop it with the infighting and backbiting. Find the greater cause and work FOR IT.
texas is a pretty racist
texas is a pretty racist state....i live on south padre island and luckily its not that bad here.....but i went to SFA for a few semesters ....and i gotta say...i got it from both sides ...black people and white people disliked me. both convinced themselves they were superior ...makes no sense really...but all you can really do is laugh it off...
heard from a few ignorant red necks ... "go back where you come from!!!"
little do they know my family has lived in texas even before it was apart of the united states....go figure ...
