Swine Flu: Bringing Home the Bacon
As the world gears up once again for a flu pandemic that may or may not arrive (it actually seems possible this time), we might want to remember some of the lessons of the last flu scare. One of these is that there are winners as well as losers in every high-profile outbreak of infectious disease. First and foremost among them, of course, is Big Pharma, which can always be counted on to have its hand out wherever human misery presents an opportunity to rake in some cash.
In 2005, I reported on the bird flu scare for the Village Voice in a piece called “Capitalizing on the Flu.” We can realistically hope that our current federal government will improve upon the bungled effort made by the Bush Administration to prepare for the onslaught of avian flu—which fortunately didn’t materialize. But certain aspects of the crisis are likely to be repeated, and profiteers will surely waste no time in gathering at the trough.
Then, as now, one of the two effective antidotes was a drug called Tamiflu. But this silver bullet came with side effects, as well as a high price tag. As I reported in 2005:
With no vaccine in sight, the U.S. government, along with others, is belatedly stocking up on Tamiflu, a drug that supposedly offers some defense against bird flu. But last week Japanese newspapers told how children who were administered Tamiflu went mad and tried to kill themselves by jumping out of windows. In a cautionary statement the FDA noted 12 deaths among children, and said there are reports of psychiatric disturbances, including hallucinations, along with heart and lung disorders. Roche, the manufacturer, is quoted by the BBC as stating that the rate of deaths and psychiatric problems is no higher among those taking its medication than among those with flu. The company is increasing Tamiflu production to 300 million doses a year to meet demand.
There are other reasons people are leery of Tamiflu. Given the rip-offs in Iraq and after the hurricanes, people are understandably interested in knowing just who is going to get rich off the plague. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, himself former CEO of drug company Searle, currently owns stock in the one company that owns Tamiflu patents—to the tune of at least $18 million. Rumsfeld says he understands why people might question his holdings, but selling them would raise even more questions. So he is hanging on to what he’s got.
A report by Citicorp at the time described which pharmaceutical manufacturers and other comapnies stood to make money:
Winners could include drug makers such as Gilead Sciences, Roche, GlaxoSmithKline, and Sanofi-Aventis. Other possible winners are hospital chains such as Rhoen Klinikum, cleaning-products makers such as Henkel, Ecolab, and Clorox, as well as home entertainment companies such as Blockbuster and Nintendo….
In order for the pharmaceutical companies to profit from making flu vaccine in the administration’s $7.1 billion pandemic flu plan, Bush now is proposing to ban liability suits against them except in cases of willful misconduct. As for those injured by a flu vaccine, possible lawsuits remain an open question….
With a worldwide market estimated at more than $1 billion, there’s big money in a flu plague. Kimberly-Clark’s Chinese subsidiary is already ramping up manufacture of new lines of medical masks, wipes, and hand-washing liquids, according to Business Week, with consulting firms Kroll and Booz Allen Hamilton selling flu preparedness advice to companies and governments. “Crisis is an opportunity as long as you see it first,” Pitney Bowes’s Christian Crews tells the magazine.
Of course, that was then, and this is now. In the coming days we’re bound to discover who’s pulling in the pork this time. But even before the U.S. markets open this morning, early indications aren’t hard to find: “Fears of a potential pandemic are bringing down stock markets around the world today,” public radio’s “Marketplace” reports from London, ”but two big pharmaceutical companies are getting a boost from the news”:
Shares in Switzerland’s leading drug maker, Roche, are up nearly 4 percent this morning. The company says it’s scaling up production of Tamiflu. The drug’s been show to be an effective vaccine against the virus.
In the U.K., GlaxoSmithKline, which manufacturers its own vaccine against deadly flu viruses, is also gaining in the markets. Glaxo’s drug is called Relenza….
Both drug makers have been approached by the World Health Organization about their readiness to deploy stocks in the case of a pandemic. Roche says it stands ready with 3 million treatments, but warned further production could take up to eight months.

Rumsfeld Tamiflu conspiracy
See, this is yet another reason why I despise liberals with a white hot fury. You guys do backflips to concoct some floopy conspiracy theory to denounce Rumsfeld's profit motives behind the Swine Flu outbreak.....yet, you go ballistic when someone points out that Al Gore has invested $35 million of his own money (when he left office, his net worth was only $2 million by the way...so, he's been quite a profiteer the past 8 years!!!!) in a portfolio of 40 companies that will benefit from cap/trade laws based upon an incomplete theory of global warming.
Liberals are angry, resentful monkey children operating like kindergarten gangsters...and you pretty much make up your garbarge on the fly. The same distortion practice you used to support Saddam....you turn around and use as an instrument to condemn Rumsfeld; WHEN NOTHING HAS EVEN HAPPENED YET. Shame on anyone that votes Democrat!

Are you denying Rumsfield's conflicts of interest are any different than Gore's? As an independent, I have some beefs about how both sides of the elite aisle conduct themselves. Bashing the other side, though, for things that Repubs are equally guilty of is just dumb. It accomplishes nothing. In fact, Republicans should still be eating the larger portion of the humble pie at this point. Work on your own party and maybe you won't suffer the losses of power that lead to such white hot rage.
Are You Misinformed or Do You Have a Screw Loose?
Al Gore won the Nobel Frigging Peace Prize, you utter twit!
Try googling speaker fees for people who have won the Nobel prize - Al's getting ripped off. After you have done that tiny bit of homework, THEN you can come back and blame everything on Clinton.
Liberals vs Right Wing Extremists
You're too funny. The educated Liberals seldom "go ballistic". That's more descriptive of the Right Wing Extremists, whether it be at their crazy, Holy Roller fundamentalist churches, or berating their political opponents (compare Limbaugh or Buchanan to Maddow). You're just so emotional! Just look at yourself.... a white-hot fury! Wow! Chill out, dude. Your last paragraph describes yourself aptly.
White Hot Fury?

Conspiracy theory?
How is the article suggesting a conspiracy theory? Is it suggesting that Rumsfeld created or spread the flu? Or are you suggesting that the big liberal media is making a big deal out of the flu in order to make Rumsfeld wealthy?
Swine Flu Conspiracy

These are the ravings of a madman.
ALL the conservatives I know ARE exactly and DO exactly as you just described. They are angry, angry, angry. About everything.
They lie and try to destroy anyone who disagrees with them and think our problems can be solved with a gun.

I'm not surprised that you didn't sign your name to this. To make a generalization of hating all liberals with a white hot fury just shows complete ignorance and an unwillingness to hear any opinions other than your own. You can show no examples of your generalization but only call names and point fingers. Those, like you, who refuse to listen and learn and just hate are a danger to our country and our freedom.
Shame on those who are willingly ignorant and intolerant.
Rumsfeld Tamiflu conspiracy- response
You fools, as far as Rumsfeld is concerned, there are a multitude of reasons for Rumsfeld (and Cheney) to be brought up on crimes against humanity, and not just limited to his manipulation of the facts and profiteering from both the '76 flu epidemic, and subsequent abuse of office/power during the "Terror Level" issues, not to mention his and Cheney’s outright lies while in office and treasonous acts relating to outing state secrets (CIA agent identification, amongst other acts) in order to falsely gain support for other illegal actions. The liberals at least have scruples and empathy for other human beings, while considering and not ignoring the results of self centered actions. It's funny that whenever somebody points out facts concerning these criminals they are immediately labeled anti American, when in fact, the right wing profiteers are the most anti American souls on the planet. There cynicism will destroy the world in no time at all now, but I guess that's the ARMAGEDDON they are trying to trigger.
But. . .
I despise anonymous posters, but hey, read the article. Rumsy said it himself! So who's concocting floopy conspiracies here? As for all the despising and name calling, when is this going to end? Maybe when you and yours decide to quit being anons and start wearing brownshirts so you know who to shoot (anyone not wearing brown).

Beyond politics of outbreak...
tagged as:- solution
While others can argue about the politics of pandemic threats, what is most important is understanding how such outbreaks occur and figuring out how to eliminate those causes (rather than develop expensive drugs to make such outbreaks "acceptable").
What I want to see and read about in the mainstream media, news magazines and blogs is that discussion with facts to back them up.
Making Money
Lots of companies are making money, the travel agency that booked the spring break for the teenagers in Queens for a trip to Cancun, the airline that flew them, the doctors that treated them when they got back, the farmers in the USA that grow pork for sales in Mexico, the Canadian lab that had to test the swine flu because the Mexican don't have labs for that, the company that makes tapabocas.
Hey, its only a pandemic and the media will forget about it in a few days.
Please note that the CDC and
Please note that the CDC and WHO do not have a connection with any drug company and simply do not issue alerts to scare the public or cause a monopoly like the drug companies to make a profit. Take a class in basic Epidemiology 101 and learn what a pandemic is.
Swine Flu
If pharmaceutical companies prepare to face a pandemic they are conspiring profiteers. If they do nothing (to prove that they aren't conspiring profiteers) they are morally irresponsible if a pandemic does occur. Either way someone gets to have a whine.
Amusing to a non-US denizen that most postings are Rep/Dem crap slinging contests rather than discussion of a possible pandemic.
When this is all over I hope
When this is all over I hope we take a serious look at the dangers of pork production. Certainly no company is going to make a huge profit from an epidemic. That would be immoral.
WHAT dangers of pork
WHAT dangers of pork production!!! If there were real dangers, we'd be having "swine flu pandemics" every year.
dangers of pork production
Most flus originate in Asia where humans live in close proximity to pigs and ducks and chickens. Meat production is also a huge contributer to global warming.
http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1879192,00.html?imw=Y
It also contributes to starvation since it takes so many calories of grain or vegetable to produce meat and so much land and water.
oh please.... it's always
oh please.... it's always about the profit - follow the money trail - I don't care what side of the aisle you are on - money (at least in the US) is all green.
Facts
I have to admit I find it disturbing that almost every time I read an article these days the diatribe that follows is nothing but left/right, us/them bollocks. I agree that this story is somewhat of a stretch, in that profiteering during a pandemic is the most important issue at hand: it's not. People DYING is the most important thing. But I do agree that it's unacceptable for Tamiflu still to be sold after it has proven so dangerous, especially for children. It's important that people are educated about what the flu is, how to recognise the symptoms and stop is spreading to the next person. It's not enough to have 3 million batches of Tamiflu on hand, and more often than not it can cause more harm than good.
We're all people - we weren't born with a "left" and "right" sticker on our forehead. The world is not a 'good' and 'evil' Disney movie - it's all shades of gray and the sooner people realise this, the sooner we can enter into meaningful dialogue that helps solve our problems.
Meaningful Dialogue: A Fantasy
It won't happen as long as the Plutocracy is overwhelming the radio with its ultra-rightwing squawkers and its 24/7 Stooges at Fox, who are sending out the pathetic Dupes to deliberately and enthusiastically vote against their own interests as the true, red-blooded patriots, many doing so in their deranged belief that a vote for a Republican is a vote for Jesus, as well.
All about the money ?
Could it be "all about the money"?
The fact that Baxter mixed the deadly H5N1 virus
with a mix of H3N2 seasonal flu viruses is the
smoking gun. The H5N1 virus on its own has killed
hundreds of people, but it is less airborne and
more restricted in the ease with which it can
spread. However, when combined with seasonal flu
viruses, which as everyone knows are super-
airborne and easily spread, the effect is a
potent, super-airbone, super deadly biological
weapon.

Dear Anon
That white hot fury will be the death of you; it's just not healthy.
Nor is hating people who happen to see the world differently to you.
So, Donald Rumsfeld would make a killing from a flu pandemic - why am I not even slightly surprised.
Such a shame DR probably thinks noblesse oblige is fancy French cuisine; he could learn a lot from Messrs Gates and Soros - making lots of money isn't a crime but doing so without any sense of morality puts him in the same ethical league as S American drug barons.
Swine Flu
Okay, this is why no-goodniks of every stripe get away with all the things they do. Almost every conversation ends up with largely irrelevant conservative v. liberal/ democrat v. republican bickering. I don't believe that solves anything, it's just a distraction. As long as we fight amongst ourselves we will accomplish nothing. My advice, do as much homework as possible, try to obtain info from reliable sources and stand together. Peace!
exactly...
come on.... I'm so sick of all this fighting. For God's sake. Can't we please say "thank you" anymore? If I was in danger of getting sick with the flu and it was prevented because of Tamiflu, I'd be thankful! What is wrong with people these days! For the love of God. Thank God and scientists for coming up with this stuff. And thank investors for putting up the cash. For every thing that works, many things failed and lots of money has gone down the drain. Jeeze. All these conspiracy theories and all of this un-thankfulness is just shameful.

Second essential problem
Second essential problem that girls russian dating com may run into by going to another country is surely - relationship with their future spouses. According to the data russian women dating service great amount of the guys, wishing to marry Russian women are over forty years and still incapable to buy a house or to succeed in life single russian women. They predominantly consider that the women from such economically poor state will not have great requirements and therefore will be ideal for the marriage. Shocking is the fact that more and more criminal cases, which happen in America, dating russian girls as well as in other states are connected with the abuse of the foreign brides. Part dating russian bride of them are beaten or even murdered. Such cases about unsuccessful wedlock become often printed in the newspapers in foreign countries, like America, and in russian dating services. Lately, Washington, D. C accepted a law, in compliance with which russian dating bride are obliged to inform possible foreign girls of the former convictions or failed experiences with outland wives of the man, whom the russian women dating single russian is about to wed. This is done, as the measure of avoidance of the criminal cases, occurred with such scaring frequency.
GOP Opposed O's Call For Pandemic Research/Prevention Funding
And don't forget in all of this, especially you Conservatives whose economic policies (Reaganomics - "trickle down" voodoo economics) caused all this worldwide economic crisis of which you're always trying to deflect the eyes of the people away from, that your friend Rumsfeld who has served (himself) in the past several Conservative administrations, refused to give up his corporate roles to be Defense Secty. Another refusal to obey the law of the land by this bunch of gangsters (just like their giving of lucrative "contracts" to their friends like Cheney's Haliburton and Bush's Carlyle Group without the legal competition and without limits).
And don't forget Pres. Obama's stimulus package asked for $900 million for funding for a program of research and prevention of a pandemic flu outbreak and the Senate Republicans/Conservatives insisted it be removed, which was done, so the package would be passed with bi-partisan support (yeah, sure). The Conservatives always oppose anything that might go to benefit "The People" - health care, education, mass transit, birth control etc. etc. - but there has never been a military weapon that can cost enough to make them blink, or a military objective they can oppose due to its cost. The Conservatives never made a quiver about the trillions of debt old Dubya/Cheney/Rumsfeld poured down the filthy pocket of the War-Profiteers/Robber Barons Haliburton, Blackwater, Carlyle Group, Lockheed, Bechtel ad nauseum in their open-ended illegal "contracts" to rebuild what they were destroying in Iraq (which didn't have WMDs and never did, but how can they get the stupid taxpayers to keep the money flowing if they aren't afraid of something?). The Democrats, except for a courageous few, let them get away with it even when it was clear it was all a hoax, so Nancy Pelosi is just as guilty and all the others too timid and cowardly to stand up for their so-called constituents. Shame on them all.
So one solution to this is, don't buy Tamiflu. I've never read that it was thought to be much use anyway. If you think you need something like it then buy Relenza and avoid filling Rumsfeld's already dirty pockets any more. (If the US really were a country of law and transparency Rumsfeld along with Cheney, Dubya, Gonzalez et al would be sitting in a court of law right now answering to the charges of their illegal wars, conspiracy, lying to the people, the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians, corruption and war-profiteering. Just more proof against the "USAmerican Myth".)

Prevention is the idea that is being left out here. It is not an issue of right or left wing idealogies. Depending on the big pharm or big government to look out for our well-being is just not working for any of us. It is our life-style that has gotten out of whack. We expect something or someone to keep us 'well' and never take responsiblity for our own health. A strong immune system, that is not compromised by drugs, is our best protection. Learn about your body and how to keep it healthly. I am a 60 years old healthly woman. It can be done. Good luck. And remain Fearless!

Not all Republicans are idiots
I'm amazed anyone's defending Rumsfeld. He's almost certainly going to be indicted for torture and his Tamiflu profits confiscated. So PLEASE encourage him to keep his Gilead stock so the US Treasury gets the dividends.
The connection's perfectly clear. It's public record. There's no conspiracy. It's not even a liberal-conservative fight. Plenty of die-hard Republicans hate the idea of torture, heavily criticise Rumsfeld for causing a civil war in Iraq by using too few troops during the invasion, and see his neocon policies as a terrorist-recruiting machine.

Mr. Ridgeway's premise in
tagged as:- solution
Mr. Ridgeway's premise in this "Bringing Home the Bacon" article is that, among other things, "profiteers" such as big pharma can "be counted on to have its hand out wherever human misery presents an opportunity to rake in some cash."
So, yes, the inventors and makers of drugs benefit when the demand for the drugs increases. Gasp.
In this country, we encourage innovation by essentially saying, "if you invent something on your own dime, you can sell it exclusively for a while, then it will eventually become public domain and anyone can make and sell it."
Look at jet skiis, for example, you could only buy them from one maker for many years, then, seemingly all of a sudden, everyone was making them. This is where "generic" drugs come from. Some very smart people risked millions of dollars to invent a drug, they sold it at a premium for a while, then their patent ran out and the generic-drug copy companies start making it and the price plummets for all of us. It's brilliant. The innovation and research doesn't cost the public anything, because it's not tax (Government) paid, but yet we get incredible drugs (first at a high cost, then much much lower).
So, where is the problem? It's because we're talking about people's health, right? I want an iPod, but it's too expensive, so I either have to find a way to pay or I don't get one (until it's off patent, or unless I buy another MP3 player that could be made without infringing on Apple's current patent rights). But when people are dying and they can't afford the very latest brand-name drugs, it is sad and tugs at our heart strings.
I don't think that means we need to overthrow our patent system, tell pharma that we are now changing the rules and will start controlling their prices for patented medications. We need to encourage these companies to invest in the next drugs, and we need to hang a carrot out there for them to do it. If we take away that carrot, then we all better be prepared to start paying for R&D through (hugely) increased taxes.
This system has resulted in an amazing array of low-cost, generic drugs that has drastically raised our standard of living.
(Since it seems to matter to people, I'm a registered Green Party member who has voted Democrate nearly all the time. I have no affiliation with pharmaceuticals in any way.)
Right!
You're right.
We are free to negotiate with pharm companies to try to get better prices, like when we (the Government) use the Medicare buying power to negotiate lower prices.
We are not free to take the propery of others (the shareholders of the pharma companies) or dictate pricing to companies.
Pharmaceutical companies are the scapegoat for the cost of our incredibly high healthcare expectations. We want the very best (way better than a national healthcare program should ever provide), then we complain about the price.
Pharma companies have the absolute RIGHT to make and sell (at whatever price they ask) the drugs they invent (while the patent is in effect). We created the rule (patent laws) and they are playing within them.
These are private companies, not Government agencies or part of a healthcare "system." Lest there be any misunderstanding,
- "Privately Held Companies" are companies that are owned by whoever owns the the company stock, which those people purchased. Sometimes it's one person, sometimes it is many. These stockholders have risked their money, and they own the company, its computers, its cubicles, its factories, and its pills.
- "Public Companies" are still privately owned, it's just that their stock can be bought and sold by anyone. These companies are entirely owned by whoever has purchased their stock with their own money (i.e., the shareholders). The "public "does not own them; the Government does not own them. (You might own a piece, though, as part of a mutual fund or 401k.) We (the Government) have no more right to take these companies' property than with privately held companies.
Exactly!
When did the drug researchers, inventors, and makers become the problem? We're fooling ourselves by making big pharma a scapegoat.
That's not to say that some pharma companies haven't acted badly at times. They have been slow to pull drugs when evidence of negative health effects starts to mount, for example. Fortunately, a system is already in place to control that, and it's working well. Pharma is beaten up by FDA regularly, and the unbelievable financial penalties they have paid through government fines and class action lawsuits should be enough to control this overall.
The conspiracy theories are just silly, however. Pharmaceutical companies are agressive for-profit companies. They are not acting altruisticly - they are trying to make money - as they should.
Pharma companies don't need to create diseases or hold back cures or whatever; there is plenty of money to be made working hard to create the next generation of drugs, which will become the next generation of life-saving generic drugs.
Or at least I hope so.

The swine flu outbreak that
The swine flu outbreak that began in Mexico has been widely spread all over different countries. It has now become a worldwide flu pandemic causing some to panic, and some to tell everyone to knock it off because it looks like an outbreak of the sniffles. Regardless, the swine flu has made an impact, and responsible for actions to shut down school districts and shut down business across the nation as a result of the swine flu scare. A pandemic of any sort is also a financial risk, but faced with the potential horrors of some diseases, unsecured personal loans seem like the last of anyone's worries. (Ebola doesn't give a tinker's about your balance sheet, Bubba.) Still, it's wise to do a little credit repair with your health and do what you can to minimize risk for swine flu.

this is such a scary flu. I do not want to get this at all. I hope this will disappear.
Swine Flu
Ahh, Thank God! No more patients reporting Swine Flu!
We should take steps to bring in awareness to the local people regarding swine flu so that it never spread again..
Thanks
