The incarceration rates for US mothers began to surge in the 1980s, fueled by the crack cocaine epidemic and tougher mandatory sentencing laws, experts said.
A recent study by the US Bureau of Justice Statistics found the number of incarcerated mothers rose 131 percent from 1991 to 2007, while the number of fathers in prison increased 77 percent during the same period.
According to the Sentencing Project, a Washington-based nonprofit, about 1.7 million children have a parent in prison.
...When a father is imprisoned, the mother typically cares for the children, said Danielle Dallaire, a psychology professor at the College of William and Mary. But her research shows that when a mother is incarcerated, the father often plays no role in raising the children left behind.
Federal statistics show children are five times more likely to end up in foster care when a mother is sent to prison than when a father is imprisoned.
Granted, folks shouldn't commit crimes, especially those with parental responsibilities. Still. We've got to do some thinking about what happens to the kids in these situations. Thankfully, there's a movement afoot to lessen the strain on kids separated from their moms. The article talks about prisons instituting day care centers, nurseries, and summer camps to keep the mother-child bond alive, as well as running bus services to facilitate visitation.
It's difficult to raise much sympathy for many of these moms, but they aren't the point. The kids are. It's one of those 'pay me now or pay me later' deals. If we abandon these kids, they're just going to end up taking their parents' places on the cell block. One wonders how many of these (non-violent) moms should have been found guilty but allowed to stay in their communities doing hard core public service, getting their GEDs and substance abuse treatment in lieu of incarceration. I think all the points here are accurate, as well as the tone of your post. I don't think imprisonment is the right answer for substance abuse. The concept of community service, perhaps married with a half-way house approach wherein the GED classes and the substance abuse therapy might be offered in-house, would be a better approach. I'm sure there are times when the parent in question is charged with substance abuse and another crime that is arguably less of a square peg within the prison system, like theft, but we have got to get to the point as a society, wherein we cease being glib about our prison populations and begin to see that it is made up of individuals, some of whom have committed 'crimes' through behavior that is not resolvable from within a jail cell, and some of whom certainly have kids made to suffer along with them.
Mother's Day
Happy Mother’s Day to all! All moms will be very happy on their special day if you would get your mother a gift, or any woman you know that is a mother that happens to mean something to you is also eligible to get gifts on Mother's Day. However, just because you have to give someone a gift, doesn't mean you can't think about saving money. Not all meaningful gifts are expensive – despite what jewelry companies tell you. (They want your money. It's that simple.) For instance, cooking for people is a popular gift, and if you look around for coupons and recipes, you could cook something very nice for Mother's Day (maybe even a vegan recipe) without needing an online payday loan or breaking the bank.
Mother's Day in Prison
The statistics are a bit troubling. I don't know what the possible increase in moms committing crimes, and of course I could joke, but it is still troubling to think of more and more parents going to prison. The stats about more fathers being derelict in their duties if their children's mother is out of the picture and in prison is puzzling. Plenty of single fathers do a very good job. (Mine did.) It certainly leaves out a lot of the typical things one can do for Mother's Day. No housework you can do, you can't go in and cook for Mom, and I'd imagine no arts and crafts if there are any nails or screws involved. (Don't want Mom shanking any guards, now, do you?) However, you could always send her a Mother's Day Poem. There are a lot of websites around the web that have a plethora of Mother's day specific poems that will be about guaranteed to be a hit. Granted, she might prefer one you wrote yourself, but it is, after all the thought that counts, right? Some of the free poems you can find range from the endearing, the cute, even the downright tear jerking variety. And no, the lyrics from "Mother" by Pink Floyd or the similarly named song by Danzig don't apply. (That would be horrible.) Regardless of whatever Mom did while raising us, she still deserves recognition as the person who brought us into this world.
