Sen. Franken Flops at Sotomayor Hearings
Ok, maybe flop is a bit of an overstatement, but in Al Franken's much awaited debut on the Senate Judiciary Committee, the no-longer-funny comedian gave one of the worst performances of his life yesterday. Looking nervous, Franken delivered opening remarks at the confirmation hearings for Sonia Sotomayor, tripping over his lines in a way he never seemed to on his other live performances. He did manage to pay tribute to the good citizens of Duluth, a sign that he's got the important parts of this senatorial job down. You can judge his performance for yourself here:

Flop?
Democrats in Minnesota are pretty pleased with how he did. Perhaps we paid more attention to what he said than the halting delivery. Not his finest moment in terms of public speaking, but that's also the first time I've seen him rely on notes, and I've seen him speak a bunch of times. He brought up issues that needed to be brought up, and I'm glad someone in the Senate is ready to challenge expanding executive power and challenge the bias against the little guy in the supreme court. I got what I voted/donated/doorknocked for.

Maybe he should use a
Maybe he should use a Teleprompter like Obama and then he can just read everything.
At least he can read, unlike
At least he can read, unlike Bush.
Do you suppose it was Leahy
Do you suppose it was Leahy or Schumer who had to explain to Franken what a 'jurist' was?
smart move i think
It wasn't that bad. No worse than many other senators anyway. And i think he's already being politically savvy...the LAST thing he wants to do right now is come off as a buffoon - any humor, or flippant comment, or off the cuff statement might be construed as arrogance, brashness, or a lack of seriousness...a pigeon hole he wants to get away from given his entertainment background...i think he chose a wise and safe path of humility and seriousness...a signal that he is taking his seat in the senate very seriously, as he should.
What do want? Fart jokes?
What do want? Fart jokes? He's a senator for god's sake. It surprises me to see this inanity as front page blurb on MJ.
He seemed fine to me, about
He seemed fine to me, about what you'd expect from a Senator. I guess considering his background in Entertainment, one might have expected him to be a little more polished, but it's just possible he doesn't consider rehearsing and fine-tuning his performances an important part of his job. I certainly don't.
(As we all know, the most important part of his job is fundraising!)
i think he did a great job.
i think he did a great job. am i not educated enough to see this man as a moron? can you be more specific? what did he do wrong?
I thought he did exceedingly
I thought he did exceedingly well.
ION, man the republicans were really crafty in trying to trip up Judge SS. They came across as mean. She is one calm & smart nominee it seems and handled very well their barbs.
I would love to see the same republicans one day groveling before her arguing a case and getting smacked on the head (figuratively)!
Klobuchar FTW
Sen. Amy more than made up for any of Al's shortcomings, actual or imagined.
She'd been working for two for a while and is in still in the habit.

Stephanie,
If it's true that "flop is a bit of an overstatement" why did you title the article the way you did?
Oh, I suppose I answered my own question by reading your "article". Why not use words like "Breaking!!" or "New Evidence Suggests" in your title to trick people into clicking through?
There goes 6 minutes I'll never get back.
Nothing can now be believed which is seen in a newspaper. Truth itself becomes suspicious by being put into that polluted vehicle. Thomas Jefferson 6/11/1807
Lightweight
Unlike other far left intellectual lightweights (Biden, Kennedy, Schumer, Leahy, etc) the buffoon Franken must be credited with having the good sense to listen to someone wiser than he is (perhaps his barber) and not make openly stupid statements.
Thank God for small favors.
It's so true!
Back in '73, Harvard was giving out cum laude honors like candy bars.
moron.
How would you know? Did you
How would you know? Did you go to Harvard? You can call him a moron if you want. I'm happy to call him Senator.
Haha, whoa wait
You really took that seriously? I thought the "like candy bars" was the dead giveaway.
No, that was a prime example of internet sarcasm, and "moron" was intended for the brain surgeon above me.
Clearly, an ivy league diploma doesn't guarantee a brain (GWB comes to mind), but they still try to keep the honors degrees meaning something...
Falling flat
A lame attempt at sarcasm that has to be explained as sarcasm??-Imagine that, an intellectually challenged leftist.
Franken is is not"smart enough, good enough, and certainly not well liked" - and clearly Sotomayor is none of these three either.
The Dems, and Minnesota must be so proud.
You can't have it both ways
Either we're over-intellectual snobs or we're intellectually challenged. Pick one.
It blows my mind that someone from the party of Glenn Beck and Joe the Plumber is comfortable throwing stones about being intellectually challenged.
Republicans are like vampires. No matter how hard you try, you can't get them to see their own reflections.
Huh?
I certainly never accused you of being an "over intellectual slob" - how could I? You, being a leftist, much like Franken are, by definition, an intellectual lightweight.
Oh, and I'm not of the party of Beck, etc- Republicans are far too wishy-washy for my politics. I am a small "d" democrat.
It was refreshing after
It was refreshing after listening to all the wind bags give their credentials as attorneys, lecture her, and make racist comments. You're going to pick on Al Franken for not speaking perfectly? Really? I say "thank God" for Al Franken.
Isn't That Cute?
"Maybe he should use a" is another genius that belives the lie that Obama uses a teleprompter more than past Presidents have! Sorry, but they all have done so. Bush traveled with one, too, even though he was largely incapable of reading it. But, hey, keep coming up with those intelligent and highly revelant criticisms of Obama! Whatever your blowhard heroes tell you to believe, go for it!
He Did NOT Flop
Al didn't flop. As someone who was a Franken delegate to the State DFL convention that endorsed Al last year, I thought he did a great job. Was he funny? No. He's not a comedian anymore and he's not supposed to be funny. He's supposed to fight and vote for health care, jobs, education and justice. He's a Senator and we're proud of him. He has now been in the U.S. Senate a grand total of 6 days. Cut him some slack. Would you prefer that Norm Coleman be there? I don't.
