Cheeseheads Rule Judiciary Committee
Usually when people complain that the make-up of the Senate gives small, sparsely populated states too much power, they're thinking about Wyoming. But this week, with the Senate Judiciary Committee running the Sotomayor confirmation hearings, that dynamic has changed a bit. The Uptake, an outfit that's been streaming the hearings live through our website, has come up with a nice map to demonstrate the regional powerhouses in the confirmation hearing.
The obvious conclusion: Cheeseheads rule. Both senators from Wisconsin (Feingold and Kohl) are on the committee, as are both senators from Minnesota (Franken and Klobuchar), giving those states a big voice in how the hearings proceed and also, their ultimate outcome. Who knew Al Franken would end up such a player after only five days on the job?

Franken on the Senate Judiciary Committee is a poetic event. What our judicial system really deserves are the Marx Brothers. Why? Because taking our judicial system seriously is the biggest joke of all.
Like the porno actress who won a seat in the Italian parliament. It was a poetic comment on the other politicians.
Problem is, at the "end of days" its not a laughing matter.
Just today I spoke with a veteran para-legal in the Dallas area. She had reached many of the same concludions I have but independantly, having not heard my points on the same subjects. It was like hearing my own diatribe--played back to me. Conclusion: Our judicial system is royally screwed. The "kingpin" of the royal screwing is the "non-published Appellate opinion". This is a binding piece of law which is unlegislated, un signed by any chief exec. and is only applied selectively. These opinions override existing laws and bypass established (published) prescedents. They are exceptions to the rule of law. The problem is that the exceptions (mathamatically) far outnumber the rules.

I never thought of it that way, but upon closer analysis you are correct as far as the republicans on that committee.
Leahy and some of the other democrats on the committee are more progressive, and the only moderating republican, Arlen Specter, switched parties to become a democrat because of the grief neoCon republicans on the committee gave him. Even when he was chairman of that committee a few years back.
The neoCon cheese heads on that committee time and again advocate that the law is off the table when it comes to neoCons.

Point taken, but one quibble: Minnesotans are NOT "cheeseheads." Only Wisconsinites are properly considered "cheeseheads."

True we don't have cheeseheads, but we do have The Uptake. They're almost singlehandedly responsible for destroying all Republican claims of fraud in the senate recount by streaming every moment of the canvassing board and court sessions, proving nothing happened behind closed doors.
