22 Things Dick Cheney Can't Recall About the Plame Case
Notes from former Vice President Dick Cheney's interview with the FBI about the leak of Valerie Plame Wilson's covert CIA identity were finally released on Friday afternoon after a lengthy legal battle. Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington sued the Justice Department last year to obtain the interview notes; a judge finally ordered their release on October 1. In the interview, Cheney demonstrated a behavior common among Bush administration officials under investigation: he couldn't remember much of anything. Here's a non-comprehensive list of 22 things Dick Cheney claimed he couldn't recall about the Plame case, in the order they appear in the FBI's notes:
- Whether the Wilson trip was discussed during any of the visits he made to the CIA with his Chief of Staff, Scooter Libby.
- Any reaction he had to Nicholas Kristof's New York Times' article about the Wilson visit at the time the article was published.
- Whether he discussed the Wilson situation with George Tenet at their meeting on June 10, 2003.
- Who he spoke to about Joe Wilson's July 6, 2003 editorial (he did remember speaking to someone, but not who it was).
- What happened to the Joe Wilson op-ed after he wrote on it suggesting that Valerie Plame Wilson had sent Joe Wilson on a "junket," and put it in his outbox.
- Any specific advice he gave his press people in the May-June 2003 timeframe regarding the Wilson trip to Niger.
- Whether he discussed the Wilson situation with Eric Edelman, one of his national security advisers.
- Whether Cathie Martin, his press secretary, entered his office while both he and Scooter Libby were present and advised both of them that Joe Wilson's wife was employed by the CIA.
- Discussing Joe Wilson or Wilson's wife with his former press secretary Mary Matalin, although he said it was possible.
- Ever discussing Valerie Plame Wilson with Libby prior to the publication of Novak's column.
- Whether Scooter Libby knew about Valerie Plame Wilson on July 12, the day before the publication of the Novak column.
- If Libby ever told Cheney he had independent knowledge of Valerie Plame Wilson's covert identity
- Dictating notes to Libby on July 12, 2003 that Cheney said looked and sounded like something he might have dictated to Libby.
- Discussing the Novak column or any of its contents with anyone at the time it was published.
- Whether he discussed the Wilson trip with Libby as a sort of "boondoggle" or "junket," although he believed it possible that he had such a conversation.
- If Libby told him that Libby was not Novak's source.
- Libby telling him how he first learned that Valerie Plame Wilson was a covert CIA operative.
- Whether he told Libby that Valerie Plame Wilson was a covert CIA operative.
- Waving off Libby when Libby offered to tell him everything he knew about the Wilson matter.
- Anyone on his staff, including Libby, ever meeting with Judith Miller during the week of July 7, 2003.
- Having a conversation with Libby during which Libby said he wanted to share the judgments of the National Intelligence Estimate with Judith Miller.
- Whether Libby told him that certain material in the NIE had to be declassified before it could be shared.
For an interview conducted around a year after the events in question, the Vice President seems to have forgotten a lot, including one very crucial detail: whether he told Libby about Valerie Plame Wilson.

I was talking with a
I was talking with a conservative friend the other day, and up comes the old saw that Clinton deserved all the crap he got at the end of his administration because, after all, he did lie under oath.
Perhaps Clinton simply should have said, "I cannot recall having sex with that woman." I'm sure both the Republicans and the media would have just left it at that.
I can't remember. What a clever rhetorical strategy. Thanks, Uncle Ronnie.
can't recall
Could this be evidence of his early onset Alzheimer's disease? In that case, we shouldn't believe anything Cheney's saying now.
Could this be evidence of
Could this be evidence of his early onset Alzheimer's disease?
That can only be a positive for Republicans, he'll be hailed as the new Reagan.
Dick Cheney, criminal
tagged as:- result
This is not simply about lying to the FBI, or covering up the Plame outing. This is about eight years of criminal actions for which Dick Cheney will never be held accountable. His secrets are unrevealed only because the mainstream, corporate media has refused to touch Cheney or Bush or any of their cohorts. A pending civil suit by the Wilsons may bring some closure to this affair in the future, but there is so much more. So much.

Can any gov. official can get away w/anything as long as....
tagged as:- solution
It seems to me that any gov. official can get away w/anything as Long as he/she invokes National Security and/or loss of memory.
Invoking nat. sec. is a prblm for democracy; It leads the people to a loss of control over their own gov. This is bad for this person, a member of the people but, I guess, good for the incipient dictatorship.
The loss of memory is a problem for the criminal justice system because it short-circuits its ability to find criminality for the benefit of the people, but helps those who want to ease the country into an incipient dictatorship. It also thwarts historians because they lose the opportunity to examine the event, uncover the patterns in the whole picture, report it, and educate our children.
The solution to the growth of the national security problems in a democracy is to invoke national security less and less until the people get the facts they want.
The solution to the loss of memory is to institute memory tests for appointees or anyone with power over the people and who has the opportunity and capability to abuse it. If a person such as Poindexter -- I believe he had a photographic memory -- or Cheney has a gross loss of memory about the people's information, a physician should be called in to perform a memory lobotomy so that the loss of memory is real and the people are satisfied that the loss is verified.
On a lighter note, fitting for this Halloween, why can't Cheney's head be removed, stuck on a life-support machine with feeding tubes and a circulatory system, and wheeled around Dupont Circle for the chess players to spit on it between moves before the lobotomy?
Seems like he is guilty. At
Seems like he is guilty. At least Fitz left us with a dark cloud.
Dick Cheney
It stands to reason that as long as people like Mr. Cheney can not only ascend to being one of the most powerful and influential people in America, that America has no right to claim any moral high ground, nor be a world leader of anything that is based upon the moral or ethical.
We live our lives with truth a permanent blur in the corner of our eye and when something nudges it into outline it is like being ambushed by a grotesque. -T. Stoppard (paraphrased)
Justice for Cheney?
tagged as:- solution
How about this to bring Cheney to justice?
Obama offers Libby a pardon - IF he will come clean on Cheney directing him to out Plame. Kind of a plea bargain.
Then convict Cheney on lying to the FBI. Its a felony.
Any problems with that strategy? Cheney is the Big Fish Lady Justice is eager to see in front of her.
Gee
Seems like Cheney did a lot of dithering.

This is reminiscent of the Alberto Gonzales hearings. Howabout we name this wimped out I Do Not Recall strategy? The GonzoCheney defense? The FredoDick defense?
Or maybe just the Dubya Defense?
cheney
FredoDick is great…so is GonzoCheney…GonzoDick, maybe a bit too glorified?
How does DubyaDick work? GOPenis?
Liar
"Libby's own notes produced at his trial reflect that Cheney told him about the CIA employment of Wilson's wife in mid-June 2003." Cheney lied, and got away with it. Dick.
The funny thing is the three
The funny thing is the three words that are not uttered in any coverage of this story: George W. Bush.
He’ll remember everything
when his memoir comes out and the book will make him look like a hero.
He is a old man..., so..,
They say: when a man get old he visits the religious sites more often.., I think the story is true because they feel the guilt that physically choking them more when they are older, yet to keep their mendacious ego.., they lie again to justify themselves and their god that whatever they lied about was true.
Inspiring....
Captain I can't recall' and his deck hand, Alberto"Opps I forgot that too' sure are stupid....And will be remembered as criminals....
When their guilty pleas are handed down from the International Criminal Court for WAR CRIMES, bells should toll for a dreadful wrong being righted...wonder if Lizzy will bring KoolAide and Bill Kristol with her during visiting hours....

Dear Dick
And boy are you ever. Five differments from Viet Nam, scardy cat. Sending off poor people sons to die in Iraq and Afghanistan. Playing a huge role in trying to get Plume and husband killed or worse. You are a disgrace to the office you held, and I am not alone in this. Most people think you are the most disgusting person ever to hold a high office in the History of the United States. Your legacy, Scum Bag in Chief.
Lary Waldman
what he does remember
so now you should juxtapose this alongside records of what Cheney has said he remembered, culled from interviews, statements to the press etc, from periods about a year prior. you should be able to establish whether cheney is selectively forgetful and if so, what trivia or important matters he actually has rememebered, or if he has been forgetful across the board.
Side of Your Mouth
My father-in-law gave me a good piece of advice; never trust anyone who talks out of the side of his mouth. Mr. Cheney, I wouldn't trust you as far as I could throw you.
Cheney can't recall
When Holder summons Cheney he WILL recall, because Holder will have ALL he needs to convict him.

Cheney's memory
Anyone who believes that Cheney would ever tell the truth is a blithering idiot. Cheney has been a politician long enough to have to have internalized the conservative notion that truth is the enemy of those who seek power. Lies are the best and easiest way to get power and keep it.
blithering
this should read "dithering idiot"...
Since when does the CIA reveal who is/isn't an agent?
The thing that has always bugged me the most (and never asked) about this case is "How did Cheney even know Plame was a CIA agent?"
I'm reasonably certain that the CIA doesn't make a habit of informing the Vice President (nor the President for that matter) just who is and who is not an active undercover CIA agent. And just as highly doubt they don't give that sort of information out to the VP's "Chief of Staff", and they DAMN sure don't tell the veeps "Press Secretary" (Cathie Martin).
When Cheney wrote at the top of the Wilson article, "Did his wife send him on a junket?", he clearly already knew who Plame was and the fact she worked for the CIA at a level high enough to "send someone" on behalf of the CIA. Even if she were only a common secretary, why would Cheney even know this? Short of a Presidential request, the CIA doesn't go around just revealing the names of its employees. And unless there was reason to suspect this was the case, who would even think to ask?
Clearly, SOMEONE IN THE CIA LEAKED THIS INFORMATION TO CHENEY. Someone that sought to help the White House silence its critics even at the expense of endangering... not just an undercover agent... but an entire intelligence network. That person needs to be exposed and tried for treason right next to Cheney & Libby.
who ratted?
Remember that dick was Sec'y DoD before. He knew lots. GHW Bush was CIA before POTUS. He knew lots. They talked. Dubya was privy to the info as POTUS as well. Which could have dropped info to Rove, et al.
If Plame had a long history in CIA, then he probably knew.
Just thinking. Have no backup here.
Just because he can't remember these "22 things", doesn't mean he doesn't remember what he's supposed to have forgotten.
The elusive Rumsfeldian "theys"…pop up everywhere.
I would like to forget just
I would like to forget just about everything the Mayberry Mafia did too.
But, on account of the fact that it is going to take the rest of the first half of this century to recover from the damage they did, I've got an uphill battle.
We must all work to find the
We must all work to find the cure for politics-based memory loss in our life time!! Give generously.
22 Things Dick Cheney Can't Recall...
That's our "Pricky Dick" Cheney!
I can't recall voting for Cheney...or for Gonzales...
...and, claiming to have such a bad memory when both parties were so involved in so many things, well...it's Ollie North, The Mute Marine, all over again...next!
Klaatu marachas necktie
Cheney
The ONE thing we KNOW.... Dick Chaney is DISTURBED!!! Well ... more like ... INSANE!! See below how disturbed he is ... twice in just 3 sentences from this article.
---Cheney said The New York Times piece was disturbing. Cheney said he was most disturbed because it was now being made to look as though the vice president had personally sent Wilson on the trip. The vice president said that all he had done was to make a legitimate inquiry of a CIA briefer in February 2002 about Niger and Iraq.--
I as a voting US citizen am DISTURBED too!! DISTURED that the RNC/Repub/Conservatives/Supporters continue to present (hoist upon) the American peoples DISTURBED individuals for elective office ... Bush/Cheny, McCain/Palin ... not to mention the cast of characters in the propaganda arm (Fox "News")!
OH, sorry about the misspelling of ChAney ... I am reminded of Lon Chaney and the characters he played in the old "Horror" movies ... you know ... the ones where he terrorized, murdered, became blood sucking animals, never died and never went away! Happy Halloween booooooooo!
22 things Cheney can't remember about the palme case
I not surprised Buckshot Dick can't recall much about the Valerie Palme case, because he is a multi-convicted drunk driver and his alcohol saturated brain has difficulty with reality.
Plame Case.

It is a good and noble thing. But it could be argued that there were too many in the previous administration suffering from that uniquely American malady CRS. I suspect that Alberto Gonzales contracted his case from the Dick.
Why are we even still
Why are we even still talking about this. It was clear that Richard Armitage of the State Dept leaked the name, however, again, it's a non story as she was not in a position of intellegence when her name arose. Who gives a rats As_ about Valerie Plame. Barrack could not remember Rev Wrights racist sermons over the years. Am I suppose to believe that???
Hey anonymous troll...
Only cowards spew right wing talking points under the moniker "anonymous" on a progressive blog.
Hello coward.
How did Cheney know Plame's connection to Joe Wilson?
Karl Rove told Cheney. Rove attended the same church as Valerie Plame and Joe Wilson.
Bush Bashing

Your group is simply another example of the left wing brain dead elite class that has ruined the USA. Thx to President Bush, outfits or misfits like your rag exist and are affoded the luxary of knuckle-headed commentary no matter how outragious or accurate the remarks...
Shame on you and your rag as it belongs right with the Obama administration ~ in the trash can!
"Outragious" "Luxary" ha.
Um. Yeah that's "outragious," idiot. Get a spelling book. Oh yeah our "luxary" jeez. I mean you call people brain dead but can't even spell the English language to which you are no doubt fanatically attached with the zeal of lunatic. I shouldn't be able to continue, but I will.
How can any person take an illiterate seriously or an illiterate expect to be taken seriously by anyone with a basic education? I guess this is why you love Fox News because they tell you what to think in monosyllabic snarls and you don't have to read or learn how to write and spell properly. Man that is stupid, oh yeah and blaming the "left wing" for ruining America is another piece of idiocy. Last time I checked conservatives controlled three branches of our government for 6 of the last 8 years, and 2/3 of them for two years. Conservatives were president for 20 of the last 28 years as well, and controlled Congress for at least 16 of the last 28 years as well. Wow, based upon your spelling, and obvious stupidity, coupled with your political proclivities, which no doubt derive from these first two, I have another theory for why our country is going down the toilet.
Oh and by the way, Mother Jones has been around for decades. They were already reporting on labor and other issues that actually affect the lives of regular everyday people, when your beloved W was snorting coke and dodging his military duties in Vietnam, but actually they go further back than that. Man, it is amazing how people with conservative values, often (though yes not always because Dick Cheney surely can spell. He just "can't recall" stuff) display the markings of poor education through poor spelling, bad grammar and an utter lack of even basic non-controversial facts, yet are fully capable of rote recitation of the talking points they hear on the various moron TV and Radio shows. If only they applied those rote memorization skills to spelling they might be better capable of holding real jobs and actually succeeding in our capitalist system instead of making trolls of themselves online.
Chenney
I don't recall anyone having such a fit over the fact that Hiliary Clinton used the same response of I don't recall or Can't remember many times when she was questioned about File Gate. This is like the pot calling the kettle black.

Richard Armitage was the diplomat who leaked undercover CIA agent Valerie Plame's identity to columnist Robert Novak. This is a known public fact.
(CBS reported this ..not FOX) Why are people still trying to rewrite history? Never mind...we know why.

Perhaps the probe should utilize the "aggressive interrogation techniques" that Mr Cheney loves so much. Surely he would not mind a little water-boarding to help his memory, since, as he has stated, it is not torture. Just an idea...
DICKless CHENEY
Whenever DICK C. shows up on TV, the only thing that he communicates is: "What an ignominious failure I am as a decent human being".
And to think that this sociopath was USVP for eight years! Has the US insane asylum been taken over by the inmates!
This article must be given proper attention. And Dick Cheney MUST be brought to justice. Dick Cheney MUST be made to pay and MUST live out his days in prison!
Get with it!
Why all this shock and horror? Humans are innately dishonest, politicians are human, therefore politicians are innately dishonest. What do you want, your country run by lily-livered eunuchs?
Cheney's Lies
They should just throw Bush and Cheney in jail for a very, very long time. Actually, Bush's whole administration should be thrown in jail.
