Conservative Christian Group Calls for "No More Muslims" In Military

—Photo by flickr user Noora.S used under a Creative Commons license.

The American Family Association, a conservative Christian group, has published an article on its website calling for Muslims to be barred from military service. Bryan Fischer, AFA's Director of Issues Analysis, argues that the Fort Hood shootings are a signal that "It it is time to stop the practice of allowing Muslims to serve in the U.S. military":

[T]he more devout a Muslim is, the more of a threat he is to national security. Devout Muslims, who accept the teachings of the Prophet as divinely inspired, believe it is their duty to kill infidels....

Of course, most U.S. Muslims don't shoot up their fellow soldiers. Fine. As soon as Muslims give us a foolproof way to identify their jihadis from their moderates, we'll go back to allowing them to serve. You tell us who the ones are that we have to worry about, prove you're right, and Muslims can once again serve. Until that day comes, we simply cannot afford the risk. You invent a jihadi-detector that works every time it's used, and we'll welcome you back with open arms.

This is not Islamophobia, it is Islamo-realism....

And just as Christians are taught to imitate the life of Christ, so Muslims are taught to imitate the Prophet in all things. Yesterday, Nidal Malik Hasan was simply being a good Muslim.

You can read the whole thing here. Fair warning: It's a vast wasteland of stupid. I don't think I need to waste time responding to its "points": if you can't immediately see how bigoted it is, there's no way I'm going to be able to convince you otherwise.

If you're looking for a more reasonable view, here's Gen. George Casey, the Army's chief of staff, who definitely knows more about the Army than this clown:

"Our diversity... is a strength. As great a tragedy as this was, it would be a shame if our diversity became a casualty as well."

Right on.

Really, by those standards

Really, by those standards we should only allow atheists and agnostics to join the military because all religions have something to say about killing, whether they argue for or against it.

Still waiting

Still waiting for the AFA's similar condemnation of devout Christians who believe the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are "holy wars" against Islam.

And one would presume they'd follow that up with one about dispensationalists who believe that a war with Iran will bring about the Second Coming - I'd certainly prefer those sort of whackos stay away from the nukes...

If you had been one of those

If you had been one of those people harrassed and harangued at the Air Force Academy, you might feel the same way about conservative "christians". All fundamentalism is on the lunatic fringe.

Muslims in the military

Is this a joke? This is stunning coming from a group that claims to believe in "freedom"...I guess freedom only applies to non-Muslims. Wow...maybe all Muslim firefighters and police officers and FBI/CIA/NSA agents should step down too?

Yeesh.

Yes - it means freedom in

Yes - it means freedom in Christ because of His sacrifice on the cross. You can't be truly free unless you are a born again Christian. That''s not my opinion just a Biblical fact. You'll have to argue with God Himself.

No need to argue with "God Himself"; it'w your opinion that because it's Biblical it's fact.

Islamophobia

What you speak of is not freedom, nor do we define freedom with the Bible. We define freedom with a dictionary in this country.
As I pointed out in another blog, America wasn't founded on Christian principles. A Republic is Roman, Democracy is Athenian, both predate christianity by centuries.
I do understand that that the "institute" for the "family" has a direct interest in bringing back the Crusades and "instituting" a christian dictatorship. But that would betray every principle of our Nation. Let the fundies send their kids off en mass to die in the desert, You want it, you fight for it..I ain't interested in joining your religious war.

McVeigh

Well, what about Christian white supremacists like Timothy McVeigh a former soldier who actually killed children. On purpose. It's idiots like these who reduce the heinous acts of a few to xenophobic tirades.

no profile pic for comment author

Timothy McVeigh was NOT

Timothy McVeigh was NOT following his Christian Religion. Would you not agree? If you say he was you may be an imbecile. What part of infedel do you not understand? I would not allow Black Panthers in the military either, or the KKK.

I will say that this site seems to have an over supply of nut jobs and ignorance.

Oh well, you do have the right to be morons......... ;-P

The problem is that it is

The problem is that it is bigoted and accurate at the same time.
It is bigoted to exclude muslims from military service because some members of the umma feel they are in religious war with the USA.
On the other hand it is accurate to say that for a 5% minority of Muslims, living a life in concordance with the ways of the prophet and in imitation of the prophet requires waging lesser jihad (ie warefare, greater jihad being internal struggle/perfection)
An even larger dilemma is that although many Muslims personally will not wage lesser jihad they will tolerate those that do.
It's tough. It's like what the English faced with the IRA and the Irish living in Ulster and Britain. not an easy situation.

Ban?

How about banning groups that want to ban groups???

Isn't this precisely the kind of nastiness that could affect a susceptible mind like Hasan's?

no profile pic for comment author

And BAN Christians too!

Yes, lets ban Christians as well since they seem to delight in starting senseless wars and killing innocent civilians. Kind of like terrorists.
They also have this knack for dictating how people should act and who should have rights and who shouldn't.
Sounds fair to me!

Will Johnston

I'm a (theologically, not

I'm a (theologically, not politically) conservative Christian, and I can say that I don't think Muslims should be excluded from serving in the armed forces.

Unfortunately, there are people who call themselves Muslims who are nutjobs. There are also people who call themselves Christians, atheists, Hindus, Buddhists, etc who are nutjobs. If every time a person calling him/herself a Christian did something horrific I was excluded from participating in society until I could prove I wouldn't do the same thing, I'd never be allowed in public life again.

Intellectual Honesty

As a gut-level argument, Bryan Fischer’s post of 11-06-2009 (“No More Muslims in the US Military”) is easy to applaud – but to this American it . . . felt wrong. I wasn’t sure why, or if I was right or wrong. I had to think for a while, and this response is where I settled. Intellectual honesty demands we attempt to counter the strongest form of the "No Muslims in the Military Argument" (hereinafter, “NMMA”). We have to make a few assumptions, but let's make them in order to state the NMMA in its strongest terms:

---

There are "some" Muslims, currently serving the United States Armed Forces, who are ideologically/politically/religiously (“IPR”) predisposed to attack their non-Muslim comrades (and "some," doubtless a majority, who are not so predisposed). Some may never act on this predisposition. Some may "snap" upon being harassed/humiliated due to their religion, and attack. Some may consciously determine to attack US forces as an act of war on behalf of their IPR and plan/execute an attack. The Ft. Hood attack was an example of either a "snap" or a "conscious" decision by a Muslim. We assume this for the sake of the argument, and exclude a pure case of non-IPR-related mental illness "anyone" would be capable of.

---

This IPR predisposition (for lack of a better word) is specific to the Muslim fraction of the military under current prevailing geopolitical circumstances. The predisposition does not apply to other religions or the non-religious. The NMMA cannot be dismissed by suggesting that "anyone is capable of this, regardless of IPR."

We can quote Ignatieff and Franklin about a Democracy fighting with one hand tied behind its back (Democracy is nonetheless – and consequently! - stronger) and “exchanging liberty for security and deserving neither.” These are generally true, but this is not the first time an attack sharing these characteristics has occurred (though the first time on US soil) - and what if another such attack occurs, and another, and yet another? Where do we draw the line and say enough is enough, Ben Franklin be damned?

How many funerals before Muslims are discharged from the military? This discharge, once rammed through, would be found Constitutional by the Supreme Court because a compelling governmental interest would be acknowledged (probably 5-4) by the Court under its "strict scrutiny" review of discrimination against a protected class. Less-restrictive means would be argued, and rejected by the majority. This assumes such a military administrative decision even merits that level of review.

Repercussions in American society would be immense, with Muslims stigmatized and harassed throughout the nation. A movement would arise to ban the possession of firearms by Muslims (ironically pushed by the same Conservatives who go to the mat against any and all regulation of firearms). It would be a civil liberties catastrophe, de facto at least, perhaps even de jure. Some non-military American Muslims might "snap" due to this increased harassment and attack their fellow citizens.

In this attempt to mitigate the threat from a scattered few Muslims in the military, 99.999?% of American Muslims would suffer grave injustice. What, really, would the NMMA ban accomplish? Former military Muslims consciously planning to attack US military forces would surely shift their focus to a mass-casualty civilian attack, via a home made bomb or illegally obtained handguns (assuming some law arose against Muslim gun ownership), or even by driving at high speed into a crowd. Military-serving Muslims who might have been harassed into a "snap" attack against their comrades are just as likely to be so harassed by civilians in the climate of fear and hate generated by legalized discrimination.

By enacting NMMA, it turns out we have solved nothing, and caused much harm. We have simply exchanged military targets for civilian targets, have we not? The casualties of Ft. Hood did their duty as our shield and protectors - as has happened before and may sadly happen again despite all appropriate vigilance. But for the Ft. Hood soldiers, it would have been us - assuming the Ft. Hood shooter was a conscious IPR enemy, and not simply insane. We would dishonor the dead if we responded by posthumously denying them their noble defense of the rest of us, dishonor them if we assaulted our Constitution and its ideals they swore to uphold.

Slightly misleading headline?

The headline of this article might be misleading. The call for "no more Muslims" is in a blog post from an AFA staffer, but it doesn't appear to be the official view of the AFA as a organization. In fact, there is another blog post on the AFA site that takes an opposing view, arguing that banning Muslims from the military would be un-Christian. The original post from the AFA staffer certainly deserves to be roundly criticized, but it looks to me like this Mother Jones headline ought to be rewritten for clarification.

I wonder if the American

I wonder if the American FAMILY association understands how difficult it is to explain to children when Christians spew hatred. Just as there is nothing wrong with being a Christian, there is nothing wrong with being a Muslim.
Perhaps when we Americans stop invading and bombing the bejeebers out of their countries , thus producing more Muslims who hate Americans (there is a whole new generation being raised who think negatively toward Americans because they are being brought up in a war zone), there will be peace. Violence breeds more violence.

I am a Christian and I have been ASHAMED of what my fellow Christians have done this year....under the umbrella of "God wouldn't want...."

My God doesn't hate. ON ANYBODY and certainly not on a whole religion.

I have another really great idea!

Everyone needs to read this link! And then you'll understand why we need to bar straight white men from the military too!

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/12/world/middleeast/12iraq.html

People are ridiculous, and this is yet another sign that the movie "Idiocracy" is exactly where the U.S. is headed.

no profile pic for comment author

Stop already...

Stop already with the phony comparisons of Christians with murderous Muslims. McVeigh himself said he was a fallen away Catholic and no, as in not any, Christian group failed to condemn his actions. All the outcry about the murder of abortionists - there have been exactly 5 in 35 years - not exactly a murderous rampage. The toll at Ft Hood- Muslim deaths=0, others =13.

Islam is a murderous sect that despises women and gays yet leftists feel the threat is from Christians who do not murder innocents or stone women, or condone "honor" killings - the worst Christians do is condemn homosexuality as "sinful" but no one calls for death.

Where is the outrage of the so-called (and totally misnamed) "moderate" Muslims?
Muslims are evil incarnate and should be banned from the armed forces. Military service is not a "right".

no profile pic for comment author

I can see where you're

I can see where you're coming from, when you say that the "moderate muslims" are showing no outrage over what the extremists or "nutcases" do. But being a Saudi Arabian Muslim I can tell you that shit is brewing here over this extremely disturbing story of a dumbass with a gun. It may not make it's way into mainstream media, but I can assure you there is a unanimous desire for this idiot to have justice wrought upon him.

Religious Tolerance

There's a weblog by that name, posted by guys with different faiths. That's because it seems an impartial cooperative is needed to halt the spew of hatred which accompanies 'Media' 'reporting'.
It does no good to note most people aren't idiotic bigoted assholes - sorry, assholes perform a valuable function, so they can't be those - from childhood. Rather native xenophobia has to be cultivated to raise a proper race of murderers...and the tendency is to bring the work back from abroad.
Since the Jesus chap had no use for Pharisees of any stripe, Xians have their work cut out for them convincing anyone they aren't complete whackjobs. Nor do I credit the press of the weapons makers with impartial reporting of 'What Muslims Think'. Strawman Argumentation anyone ? You say what the other guy thinks ( like Hell ) and then dispose of his arguments.
Sounds good. Works fine to divorce discussion from reality.

More Garbage From The No Talent Crowd

So much to say in such a little time. First, look at who is leading the Repub/Christian Right in this Country. Its so deep with so called "Men" who were of age during Vietnam but found ways to get out of it. Right up front were Limbaugh and Cheney and the list goes on and on. This is an inferior group of weak People who see what they think is "Their" whiteland is going away. Just look at the Tea Baggers. Now,these so called "Christian" rightwing groups are so loaded with closet Homosexuals its almost funny if it were not really a reality. Stop allowing these backward anglo-saxons no-talent non-serving wimps the time of day. There is much much more.

AFA's petition

It is not bigoted to screen certain segments of society out of the military if they are a security risk - it's reasonable and rational to do so. Islam is not a religion of peace - it is a movement in history whose fruits of fanatical violence are well documented. The sooner we relieve ourselves of political correctness and see the world through the eyes of reality, the safer we'll be.

no profile pic for comment author

A Better Idea...

Lift the ban on gays in the military. I wouldn't trust a Muslim to live next door to me now, not after what happened last week. And I'm tired of hearing Muslims jump up and play the victim every time one of their own commits mass murder. And where are all the peace-loving Muslims while Islamic extremists are murdering innocent people in Asia and Africa? Sorry, but they've worn out their welcome in this hemisphere. Send them home.

Following Fischer's reasoning...

Following the Fischer's reasoning to its logical conclusion leads to some pretty interesting results. For instance, we shouldn't allow Christians to purchase firearms or enter churches until they invent a foolproof way to sort out the murderers from the pacifists. We also shouldn't allow Christians to serve in the military or hold office, because their citizenship is in heaven and not in the United States. Come to think of it, we cannot allow them to serve as police officers, either, because they are "not under the law, but under grace." And don't even get me started on Jews... Maybe if Fischer had bothered to try citing where exactly Muslims are instructed to kill infidels, he would have realized in advance how incredibly stupid his argument was going to sound.

History repeats

I guess we'll never learn that it's a serious mistake to say things like "all Muslims are ... ". What do you say to the thousands of Muslim Americans who served with distinction? I guess the same thing you say to the tens of thousands of gays who have similarly served. "We hate you". Wanna bet this guy from the AFA has a "I support the troops" bumpersticker?

The problem is not with the diversity of the Army;

the problem is the perversity of the national leadership. Muslims SHOULD to what Hassan did in the context of a massive war on Islam, just as African Americans should do such a thing in the context of a war on blacks. The problem is not what Hassan did; his actions were rational and reasonable under the circumstances. The problem is the circumstances. The problem is the GWOT. Everything else is a red herring. We only think he did something wrong because our whole nation is totally and irretrievably ass-backwards and wrong. This is supposed to be a land where people of different religions and ethnicities can live to gether in peace and harmony. Such a commitment to pluralism and diversity is fundamentally incompatible with imperialist campaigns against various peoples in the world who are represented by American minorities. You can't have it both ways; do you want to be the US or nazi Germany? In nazi Germany, you can do whatever the freak you want; in the US, you can't go around the world making war on anybody who has something you want or who looks at you funny. What we do defines who we are. Hassan knew that; when are the rest of us going to catch on?

Bryan Fischer's Sorted History in Idaho

We extensively covered this bigoted homo hater here in Idaho when he was Executive Director of the so called Idaho Values Alliance. Exposing this hate monger cased his funds to dry up so this teabagger moved to Tupelo Mississippi last summer to spread his hatred over the AFA airwaves.

Keith Olbermann slammed Fisher last night in his Worst Persons segment. I have posted the video along with a required Bryan Fischer reading list that exposes this pious hate monger for the fraud he really is.

Diversity came about at the

Diversity came about at the Tower of Babel when humans wanted to be God. All evil is a result of sin. America is reaping what it is sowing. It is sad that we can't just realize how sinful we are and accept that we need forgiveness and turn back to God, His Word, and His son Jesus (2 Chronicles 7:14). I'm thankful that America still allows everyone despite religious views to express their feelings freely. This may end, however, as in the days of the early Christians and as in some countries today.

Actually, Genereal Casey's quote wasn't "Our diversity... is a strength. As great a tragedy as this was, it would be a shame if our diversity became a casualty as well."

As played back on audio it was "Our diversity... is a strength. As great a tragedy as this was, it would be WORSE if our diversity became a casualty as well."

I wish he had said "shame". I can't think of much "worse" for those killed and their families. I will give him the benefit of the doubt that he ment shame and not worse, but lets at least get the quotes correct.

Christian handjobs

What a load of horse-apples. Perhaps these christers are forgetting old Tim McVeigh. Was he a christian terrorist? He was affiliated with the Christian Identity Church, the Posse Comitatus, and a host of bat-guano crazy militia groups that all claimed to have an umbilical connection to the lord. The Fort Hood murderer is mentally ill, probably has a borderline personality disorder, (I'm a psych nurse, look it up, it fits), which in the old days we'd refer to as a sociopath, (or asshole). If he wasn't a muslim he'd be some other sort of murdering son of a bitch.

Islam IS A HATE GROUP--WAKE THE HELL UP

Why does Islam get a free pass on being a hate group? What is the difference between Islam and the KKK or the Skinheads. Why do we booo these group but were suppose to tolerate islam, why. Islam enslaves their women: they make them wear a sheet while the men walk around with the latest hair and fashion styles, the men can have sex with multiple partners, ahh "wives" right in front of his "wife" if a women is even suspected of adultry, the she is whipped or stoned, if she is raped, the she is honor killed. This goes on right here in the u.s. this is major discrimination, no , its down right slavery. And this crap about muslim not wanting to kill muslim, are you kidding me. The blow each other up iin Iraq and Afgan, etc. and they kill their women. they are nothing but a violetn hate group against Americans, Jews, non believers, and freedom for women. Make it know that they are a hate group!!! spread the word!!! change this politically correct crap!!!

bucknackt

Brilliant!!!!!

What better way to end repeat deployments and get our troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan!!!! All a soldier who is fed up with the proping up of corrupt governments in Iraq and Afghanistan with American bodies has to do is claim Islam as their religion of choice and they get to come home, alive! That will leave only the right wing fanatics to be sacrificed for the profit of the military industrial complex, a win-win situation for the American people and the military. We get out of Iraq and Afghanistan and the military is left with troops unable to think on their own!

Let's require everyone in the military to take an oath to put loyalty to country above everything else.
If a Muslim or Christian or any other religious zealot says his loyalty to God trumps loyalty to country....he shouldn't be allowed to serve.
