Two-thirds of Alaska is covered by permafrost that, once thawed, becomes a bog virtually impassable by sled, foot, or boat. Warming temperatures also threaten to unearth frozen stores of toxic and even radioactive materials the government buried beneath the permafrost throughout the state.
