You know, Guantanamo has an historical echo. Remember Botany Bay in New South Wales (that's Australia for the spatially challenged and Americans)? Following the Revolutionary War (1770's) it was no longer possible for Britain to send its convicted felons to New North American colonies. They had to get there on their own. So Australia had the doubtful privilege of hosting penal colonies. But at least we gave them a trial, after a fashion. Penal servitude, transportation for life: Now you know where the US got the idea. Another Brit. invention exploited by others. Most notable being the hovercraft, jet engine, concentration camp...the list goes on. Seriously guys, it's taken us Brits decades if not centuries to live down these human rights violations. In 100 years' time Guantanamo will still be mentioned when America is reviled. And you are worried that on release Guantanamo inmates might be a tad disenchanted and do something rash; like crash an LPG tanker into a US Embassy. Might be a lot cheaper, not to say pragmatic to give all inmates on release a cheque for $1.0M and a personal apology letter from George W. Bush. Sure that would be appreciated, as one terrorist to another. A few lines of "Jim Jones", sung but presumably not written (1901) by Bob Dylan might be appropriate:
