The Last Days of the Ocean

The fate of the world's oceans doesn't get a whole lot of press coverage these days—if any—but in fact they're all an utter mess, and it's a real problem. From Julia Whitty's now-online cover story from the March issue of Mother Jones: "Science now recognizes that the ocean is not just a pretty vista or a distant horizon but the vital circulatory, respiratory, and reproductive organs of our planet, and that these biological systems are suffering." Read on for the gruesome details.

You can read this month's complete oceans package online here, with articles on, among other things, the effects of over-fishing and how the fishing industry is allowed to regulate itself; how polar bears now face extinction; how Navy sonar is killing whales, and how a company set up by George H.W. Bush is killing off the most important fish in America you've never heard of.

Great post.

Unfortunately, nobody in power will read it or, if they do, take remedial action.

It never ceases to amaze how people don't realize that the ecosystem is interconnected. Once the species at the "low-end of the totem pole" are gone people consistently fail to realize that the whole pole falls.

The abuse of the environment has been a criminal act, both on the part of those who profit and those that turn their heads enjoying "the day" that will have severe repercussions.

To all, I hope your favorite football team wins, but I don't care. I hope your favorite movie wins the Academy award, but I don't care. I hope you get the promotion you want, but I don't care.

What I care about is ensuring that you, your children, and your grandchildren (and all after that) continue (or get to) see beautiful oceans, serene sunsets, and the energizing glow of the sun in the morning.

No, it's not an "eco-thing". It's just common sense.

This issue was disturbing indeed, but so necessary as a means to raise awareness. It can be depressing to realize how bad things have gotten, but there are some wonderful organizations working to make a difference: The Montery Bay Aquarium posts useful action ideas and guidelines on their web site (monterybayaquarium.org, under Seafood Watch), please take a moment to check it out! And Ocean Conservancy (oceanconservany.org) will email members (sign up is free) to participate in action alerts to initiate letter writings, etc. and help get the word out. Please please, if you can about these issues, make it a point to take action wherever possible to make a difference.
