Immigration and Polls

Yesterday, Tamar Jacoby, a pro-immigration analyst, wrote in the Washington Post that not only were guest-worker policies for immigration immoral, but they weren't even that popular:

The Manhattan Institute and the National Immigration Forum recently conducted a series of focus groups testing two contrasting options: a guest worker program or a more traditional immigration plan based on the idea of citizenship.

The results ran sharply counter to the expectations of policymakers in Washington. Democrats and Republicans alike overwhelmingly preferred the citizenship model for reasons of both principle and practicality.

On the other hand, Charlie Cook's "Off to the Races" report today noted that polling reveals that the majority of Americans don't even like guest worker programs:
Respondents were then given two alternative statements. One choice was: "You should grant temporary-worker status to foreigners who are here illegally. Most of them will stay in the United States anyway, and this plan would allow the government to keep track of them and their activities and require them to pay taxes while they are here."

The other option was: "We should not grant temporary-worker status to foreigners who are here illegally, as this would make them and their families eligible for government services while they are here. We should not reward people who have broken the law, and this will encourage even more people to enter the United States illegally."

Given that choice, 39 percent favored temporary status, with 56 percent opposed.

That sure sounds like most people just want to kick all undocumented immigrants out of the country, doesn't it? I have no idea how to reconcile these two findings. Probably, as with most policy questions, what people will agree to all depends on the way things are framed. Cook also noted that 71 percent of poll respondents were more likely to vote for a candidate who "favors tougher immigration controls," which leads one to think that we'll see a lot of demagoguery on this subject come the midterms this fall.

All the illegals should be required come forward and enlist in the selective service of their choice like americans are required to do. The country benefits, the recruters benefit and at that time, give them green cards and make this part of their citizenship process thus the illegals benefit because lets face it, it`s pretty difficult sending them back, so they benefit again cause they get to stay .But they will be documented, thus the country benefits . It`s important and more practical to do this in a two step, simultaneous manner. But first figure whether to put the coast guards or rotate some military personnel on the border and build enough fence that you dont have to use as much personnel . This way you might not need the guest worker program . Look how many people benefit. And I think we can over look the trespassing crime. This should be on the table.Again this should be the second step in this two-step process.

The fact which “Americans” choose to consistently overlook is from the get-go “we have been the interlopers on this land we call the USA. Immigration as a national issue brings to the forefront how the “tilt” in our moral compass. The values illuminated by the State of Liberty are now mere words with no integrity. The legacy of today’s Americans is selfish, greedy, petulant, intolerant.

How about this? If the immigrant trying to work in the U.S. is illegal and has gained employment through false documentation they get deported and the company that hired him or her gets fined. We need to set up a huge data base based on DNA and only those legally here in the U.S. will be allowed to work anyone with false I.D.'s and other documentation get deported, fined and like I said the company that hired them gets fined no, if, ands or buts! The money we would spend on such a DNA identification tool would be money well spent and save us billions in the long run. What are we looking at here for the future if we do not solve this dilema. What is it showing the rest of the world? How much more money are we going to waste on this immigration issue? Mexico needs to get on board with these ideas.

>If you are ready for the adventure of a lifetime, TRY THIS: >Enter Mexico illegally. >Never mind immigration quotas, visas, international law, or any of that nonsense. >Once there, demand that the local government provide free medical care for you and your entire family. >Demand bilingual nurses and doctors. >Demand free bilingual local government forms, bulletins, etc. Procreate abundantly. >Deflect any criticism of this allegedly irresponsible reproductive behavior with, "It is a cultural U.S.A.thing. You would not understand, pal." >Keep your American identity strong. Fly Old Glory from your rooftop, or proudly display it in your front window or on your car bumper. >Speak only English at home and in public and insist that your children do likewise. >Demand classes on American culture in the Mexican school system. >Demand a local Mexican driver license. This will afford other legal rights and will go far to legitimize your unauthorized, illegal, presence in Mexico. >Drive around with no liability insurance and ignore local traffic laws. >Insist that local Mexican law enforcement teach English to all its officers. >Good luck! You'll be demanding for the rest of time or soon be dead. Because it will never happen. It will not happen in Mexico or any other country in the world except right here in the United States, Land of the naive and stupid, idiotic politically correct politicians. >If you agree, pass it on. If you don't, go ahead and try the above in Mexico or Iraq.

I have been a Merchant Marine[commercial seaman] my whole adult life. I have been in over 90 other countries, and have yet to see one that will not put you in prison for being there illegally. I met my wife in the Philippines and it took me 10 months to get her an immigrant visa. Things are screwed up everywhere but that's no reason to open our borders to cheap labor and all the bad things that come with it.

Why does ILLEGAL have exceptions? Why are preferences afforded Hispanics? What about Asians? Europeans? The way things are going, we may as well just open our doors wide and let hell break loose. Our politicians should protect our borders and uphold the law - pure and simple. So, I still don't get it..what's the debate all about? I have relatives who have immigrated to this country lawfully and have become successful American citizens - without handouts. To ALL illegal aliens, I say, the end of the line is back there! There are many many others, outside the Latino race, who want to come to this country too and legally!

What will it take for Americans to wake up and demand better representation?

We now have a war that was deceptievely started in the name of stopping the terrorist. We are also told we have an opportunity to establish a democracy in that part of the world. Who are we to tell a country that they need a democracy? Also, we have a democracy in that region. It is Isreal and it sure cost us since it became a country. One hundred and thirty four billion since 1948. That is twenty four thousand for every isreal person. Will Iraq also require our unending financial support that is never paid back?
We now have very high taxes and yet we also have a national debt that is astronomical (8 Trillion) and yet the U.S. continues to spend
foolishly and beyond our budget. We never hear of contractor fraud or jail sentences. Are we to believe this never happens?
We are not very well liked around the world despite our handing out billions of dollars that would be better spent in this country for things like education, job training, health care cost, etc. Do our leaders need remedial courses in diplomacy?
The war is also costing us an erosion in our freedoms through the patriot act and FISA. However wellmeaning this administration may be, these tools are unnecessary. The oversight the courts provide ensures our government does not overstep its bounds. I for one trust the courts more that government leaders who bend and slant thing to look good.
The government has always had the power to condem your property for the good of the public but it had to be for a good reason, like a road, and they had to pay a fair market value. Now they seem ready to to condem your property for the benefit of a third party to develop a mall because it would provide more value. More value to who....the tax coffers?
Americans can't be blamed for this poor representation we now have. Afterall with two major parties to select from its not like you can say "NONE OF THE ABOVE".
We also can't say much about "SPECIAL INTEREST" lobbying for our hard earned tax dollars. We don't even know who and how many and how much they each get every year. But you can believe its alot and we would be shocked to know the amounts and true nature of some of these groups.
Americans have a hard enough time holding onto their jobs, that at any moment may be shipped off to a foreign country, and raising their families. For most of us trying to follow politics and decipher what is really being said and going on is a major chore ending in frustration.
If we really want to talk about national security, how about closing our borders to illegals and possible terrorist. Since it is so easy to get into and stay in this country I would think our new Homeland Security group should be screaming to do just that. As a side benefit maybe we won't have any terriorist coming into this country and the untaxed jobs that go to illegals may be taking over by Americans who we know always pay their taxes. In addition, free medical care and other government services for illegals now being paid for by all Americans would disappear.
Stop the war in Iraq and let them decide their own fate.
If we allow our government to lead us into war it had better be for a very good reason and one that is verifiable. Otherwise we will get a reputation for being the worlds bully and sooner or later we may have to face a giant.
We also need more accountability in government especially its spending.
There has to be a way of grading our leaders and holding them accountable for their actions. This is not to punish them for incompetence but for their illegal or deceptive methods used while in office. Ordinary Americans are held accountable everyday, why should our leaders be any different? Since we rarely, if ever, hear of corruption in government or its contractors are we to believe corruption only happens at the lower classes of society?

These are things we should expect our representatives to be on top of and yet they seem to be missing the ball by a large margin.

I have to agree with some of the comments made. I do not find it fair to give medical benefits, nor anything else to illegals. I have children that have no insurance. I work 50-60 hours a week, do not see my children so I can support them and hope to give them a better life. And what do I see on t.v. a discussion about an immigrant familys son getting a full ride to a well know college. This should be my legal child, your legal child, a child born here by parents born here legally. I hate that I work in a medical field and see so many people take advantage of this. They come in and have services done that are not needed and feel like they deserve more. What happens when and if they get legal status...next thing is equal to americans they should get and deserve the jobs and pay legal americans get. Right now everyone says they do the jobs americans won't that is because they are not legal and don't have a choice what will happen when we do give them that choice? I see my mother who has also worked her entire life fight to get medical benefits, yet immigrants who have never paid anything get it. I don't understand and I guess I never will. Why don't they go and march in Mexico to fix Mexico. So then no one will want to come here.

That illegals are a financial burden for taxpayers is a given. They exist because there is a demand for their cheap labor with no reprisals/penalties for employing them. They pay NO state or federal income taxes, most here illegally are sending their untaxed earnings to their home country where it becomes real buying power.Want this stopped? PUT THE CEO,s OF THE POULTRY & PRODUCE INDUSTRIES using them in jail.Fine them heavily & REPEAT AS NECESSARY.

The honor system of temporary guest workers returning to their country is absurd! Face it, we're stuck with them and Congress is to blame.

WHY ARE THE MAJORITY OF U.S. CITIZENS AGAINST ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION?
It’s not because they demonstrate under a foreign flag, or re-create our national anthem, or show no appreciation for the $300 billion we spend on them every year for schooling, medical care, and suppressed wages, or speak an overwhelming amount of Spanish in public places, or expect English to also be written in Spanish, or their belligerent attitude for rights not afforded to those that illegally enter our country, or using fraudulent documents, or sending over $20 billion a year back to their home country, or not paying their share of taxes and social security, or abusing our welfare system with anchor babies….

And worse than all that, our Congress will not enforce the laws, refuses to build a double fence(A "vehical barrier" will not do), does not provide adequate funding, and wants to give them “a path to citizenship” for more votes. We need to create a permanent visa with NO PATH TO CITIZENSHIP.

…. IT’S BECAUSE OF ALL OF THIS!!!

At the current rate of illegal crossings, the Hispanics will represent approximately 35% of the population by the year 2026. To see what the future holds for us, think about the problems Europe is having with culture clashes and non-assimilation.
