Monitoring Dillingham
Now here’s a serious waste of Homeland Security dollars. Dillingham, Alaska, with a population of 2,400 (half of which are Native Alaskans), will soon be outfitted with 80 security cameras (over 60 have already been installed) .That’s one camera for every 30 residents, all purchased under a $202,000 Homeland Security grant, the devices are intended to prevent terrorism.
Now granted, Dillingham experienced three homicides and six unclassifiable deaths in the last three years, but this doesn't seem like a responsible use of tax dollars. Police Chief Richard Thompson stands by the expense as a protection against terrorists using local ports as a “backdoor” entrance into the rest of the country.
Beyond adding waste to the $41 billion Homeland Security budget, the proportion of cameras to people envisioned for the town is the most disconcerting aspect of the story. The 2,400 citizens of Dillingham, a town with no streetlights, deserve a right to privacy. According to some residents, people don’t want to visit mental health facilities anymore out of fear of embarrassment. Local fisherman Ronnie Heyano, puts it best, asking, "who will be watching the watchers?"

There's an interesting Alan Moore theme here (is it intentional?) between the heavy surveillance featured in the recently-filmed V and the repeated question that appears in Watchmen. Who, indeed, is watching the watchers?

As a resadent of Alaska it has become a constant embarassment to watch the federal pork get flushed down the toilet around here.
Both Ted Stevens and Don Young make no bones about trying to secure as much as they can and are not above threats and intimadation to do it.
Why they think so much of these two pork mongers that Anchorage re-named it airport what was Anchorage international is now Ted Stevens international.
As for Don Young they want to name one of our famous bridges to noware Don Youngs way, and I might note, no one but the developers and the well conected seem to want these gross exampels of government waste.
To add to the mix many of you might not be familer with the story of our Governor Frank Murkowski formerly one of our state senators, who ran for governor last time around. after winning the election it was up to him to appoint his succsessor in Washington, he went through the motions of compiling a list of qualfyed people but in the end appointed his daughter Lisa Murkowski to fill his post. But I digress back to wasted money in Alaska about a year ago the Gov. decided he wanted a private jet to do state buisness and he said the state troopers could get to one of the far flung villages aroud the state in a hurry, we have many. However a Gulfstream III can't land on most of their short gravel runways. He also said we would use it to trans port federal prisoners to private prisons out of state.
So Frank hits up the department of home land security for the 1.5 mil so he can aquire this much needed piece of equment for it was crucial to security here in the great white north.
Well the feds turned him down so he went to the state ledgislature they told hin no, the majority of alaska voters said hell no!
Frank said up yours and bought it anyway guess thats a republician for you

End the genocide in Darfur
Every day, Darfuris face rape, murder, and starvation. Be a Voice for Darfur: tell Obama to end the suffering.

Just another example of U.S. treasure ill-spent by the doomed taxpayer who refused to take notice and/or get off the collective couch.
Once Bush-Cheney "exit" one way or another, all their business friends enriched, it will be the poor and the middle class pitted against each other. Let the scapegoating begin.
