Crackdown on Sex-Selection Abortions

An Indian radiologist was sentenced to two years in jail for providing a pregnant patient with an ultrasound and then disclosing the baby’s sex. Use of ultrasounds to determine gender is forbidden in India due to widespread abortion of female fetuses. The doctor, Anil Sabsani, was caught when he told an undercover officer that for $35, she could know the sex of her child. Once paid, Sabsani divulged that while the fetus is a girl, it could be "taken care of" (wink, wink). This is the first conviction of its kind in India.

According to the Lancet, a leading British medical journal, "the past two decades have seen the birth of nearly 10 million fewer girls than would otherwise have been expected, nearly all presumed by researchers to have been aborted." Sex-selection abortions have been banned for just over a decade in India, and Lancet suggests they haven't disappeared, estimating that 1 out of every 25 female fetuses is aborted, totaling approximately 500,000 per year.

Many people blame technology rather than the fact that, say, many cultures continue to value boys more highly, partly due to their ability for agrarian work. "This is not a cultural thing," says Donna Fernandez, director of Vimochana , a women's rights group based in Bangalore. "This is much more of an economic and political issue. It has got a lot to do with the globalization of technology. It's about the commodification of choices."

Like many abortions, it's about the commodification of human beings.

If you think the rich and/or powerful give a damn about the masses of humanity, you haven't read enough real history. If there is a profit to be made, or power to be gained, the lower classes are nothing but cannon fodder and consumers of crap products at outrageously profitable prices. Human beings have always been a commodity, and it doesn't look as if that will change any time soon.

Let me once more try to wrap my brain around this global dilemma: The American Christian Jihad will lambast its own women for aborting a fetus, cut educational funding and training for high tech industrial pursuits within our borders, and, in the same breath, award a country who, as a matter of practice, aborts its girl babies with the American corporate blessing of our jobs.

America cannot claim the moral high ground of daring to call ourselves a Christian nation when our duplicitous standards steer that clear of what Jesus would really do. The egalitarian esteem in which Jesus held all humanity never placed the value of one person over another. So, Jesus would never sit complicit for gain in the abortion of female children, to facilitate a male child's entry into computer geekdom when he's ten. Jesus would not turn a blind eye to killing off girl babies because parents who chose to bring another life into the world resent not having the right to choose the gender of that life. Jesus would likely bitterly resent parents' cavalierly ending a life to avoid the responsibility of a dowery later. And, Jesus would very likely rebuke and revile any kingdom, government, or corporation who would dare to benefit from this abomination by its monetary rewards to those who kill with such thoughtless callous malice aforethought. These parents pass their children through the fires of the gods they hope will sate their want, their lust, their greed. They offer up the reward of God, the fruit of their wombs, to the wrath of this life for money. The judgement for this abomination is wrapped up in days to come when there are too few females available to carry on the lines of their nations. Whatsoever we sow is what we will reap one hundred fold.

God is not pleased, and world is not amused.
