Trafficking and Abuse a Concern at the World Cup
It's less than a hundred days until the start of the World Cup in Germany, where more than three million fans will fill the stadiums from thirty-two nations. Understandably, the host country wants to do its part to make sure its guests are comfortable. But in addition to bathrooms and food stands, German cities are also bringing in mobile brothels to accommodate the anticipated boom in the sex trade.
In addition to the registered German prostitutes who will be there, it's possible that over 40,000 women from Central and Eastern Europe will enter the country illegally to "entertain" clients. (Prostitution is legal in Germany, and all registered prostitutes are unionized and receive pensions and health benefits.) So while many women are anticipating a boom in business, critics are concerned about human trafficking and abuse, especially once fired-up soccer fans start hitting the streets after hours of drinking at the games.
European soccer games are notoriously rowdy, and often lead to disorderly and violent behavior. One need only glance at the Scotsman's regular feature, "football and sex assault claims" to get a sense of what goes on here. And while Germany is spending upwards of 20 million euros on stadium security alone, they've done little to quell fears about sex abuse beyond pledging to hand out 100,000 free condoms.

Footballer should not be equated with fans. The Scotsman articles are all about pro soccer players. Clearly there has been a misunderstanding here, Juliana. The charges are related to professional soccer players based in Scotland (footballers), so your unfortunately assuming that European fans ('over there') are likely to act like some crazed, rampaging rapist brutes is absurd and leaning out of the window. That this blog posting is based on misunderstanding one word, that would seem to be the perfect moment to just get on a plane and meet those fans here in Germany. I suggest retracting the blog or backing it up without generalizing.

It's not too funny, is it, how on the one hand, your average Nigerian struggles to make ends meet, yet more than one million sex workers sell there bodies in Nigeria...
f all women are whores...(???), than it's just so onvious that all are being exploited!!!! By all Men!!! (???)
Yemen, Ethiopia and Uganda all have fertility rates above 7 (average # of children per woman), and in Nigeria, the fifth largest contributor to the world's population, the average # is close to six...
But is this so critical...???--insofar as 44% of the population lives in countries where fertility is at or below the replacement rate...
In fact, no major industrialized country has a fertility rate above 2.1--'the replacement rate."
Actually, my point here is that , what if, in those countries where population growth is a major problem, performing sex was entirely up to the woman... Because most of the time, one would think, the women in question are virtually slaves...???
Furthermore, a Harvard grad, ex-police chief Dr. McNamara has come to the self-evident conclusion that drugs and prostitution have been around for ever and, simply, they're not going to go away...
So is it real funny how Hon Knapp (Senior Judge, So. District of NY), understands how," Each year the gov. has spent more on enforcing drug laws than it did the year before. Yet each year there have been more drugs on the streets.
Yeah, it's common knowledge that it costs more to send a person to federal prison than it does to send him to a private college, including books, ect....
And that's why Gen. Ashcroft (in the war on drugs) directed prosecutors to report judges who hand down penalities that don't meet sentencing requirements...???
So, how is it that in certain European countries 'soft" drugs are 'frowned upon," yet, somehow???!!!, in '97 the U.S. Supreme Court decided," ... a sentencing court may consider conduct of which a defendant has been acquitted."
Oh bloody wow!!!!!
