Powell Comes Clean on WMDs
Robert Scheer recounts a recent conversation with Colin Powell, during which Powell admitted that neither he, nor top government officials, ever perceived Iraq as a nuclear threat. When asked why the President disregarded the State Department’s conclusion to this effect, Powell responded that "the CIA was pushing the aluminum tube argument heavily and Cheney went with that instead of what our guys wrote."
According to Scheer, Powell affirmed that the President’s State of the Union reference to Iraq's quest for uranium from Niger “was a big mistake.” Adding, "it should never have been in the speech. I didn’t need Wilson to tell me that there wasn’t a Niger connection. He didn’t tell us anything we didn’t already know. I never believed it." Powell continued that it wasn’t the President that wanted to premise the war on nuclear threat, but "all Cheney."
As Scheer points out, it’s convenient for Powell to place the burden to Cheney and remain a Bush loyalist. "But it begs the question," he writes, "of how the president came to be a captive of his vice president’s fantasies."

Bush may not be the brightest light but he knows that Cheney is the the only thing standing between him and getting his head shot off like the last guy who had a Haliburton Vice President did. Did you notice that when Bush spoke to the 9/11 Commission he had to take Cheney with him? That was to make sure no one could claim that he had said something he wasn't supposed say, like maybe, "Well, yeah, Cheney was in charge of the whole thing."

If Powell is suggesting Wilson needn't have bothered, then I respect Powell all the less - if that's possible.

Powell and Tenet are as guilty as Bush and his cronies for the lives lost, how can they be made to repent for their crimes, I suggest exile to Iraq, or some other war torn country. They have no shame , they will live comfortably on their pensions, so will Bush.

You would think Powell as a Military man would have objected in strong terms because he knew our troops were being putin harms way for poorly defined and unjustified reasons. His failure to speak out 3 years ago shows his lack of character . He needs to swing from the same tree as Bush and Cheney and the rest of the Neocon bastards.

Listen up soldiers, your commanding officers have spoken. The war's a sham. Lay down your arms.

so many issues regarding irak and we are still there fighting. In war there's allways loss of life. what would it take to end american participation in that area ?

What shocks me the most is how candid Powell is to say he went along with the lies. I thought he really believed in this Administration's allegations, but it seems he knew all along they were lying. That's even worse because it shows that Powell did not have the courage to stand for his ideas.

OIL OIL OIL OIL OIL.
Did I mention HUGE profits and OIL? Bush isn't the sharpest tool in the drawer, but he is the king of the new generation of robber barons. Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it. We've managed to bring back the era of giant corporations making huge profits based on some yellow journalism and a willing and ignorant public. Cheney is just one of Bush's peers, except clearly a few notches higher on the evolutionary scale. Neither of them need fantasy, they just need potential profits to motivate themselves and a greedy or insecure public. Remember that the war would pay for itself? Clearly it did- if you have the right stock options.
